Description

iimay be formed of metal and the check carraenied Jan. 9, i923.
PATENT oEFic HARRY o.` s'rnnnnn, "or PORTSMOUTH, `oiiro.
` CHECK Homann non MINING cans.
i Application filed' October'l, 1921. Serial No. 506,698.
To all whom 'it may conceive.'
Be it known that. I, HARRY (l. STALDER, a e
citizen of the United States, residing` at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful vImprovements in `Check Holders for Mining Cars; and `I "do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others 1Q `skilled `in the art to Which it appeitains to make and use' the saine.
This invention relates to an improved check holder for use in connection with inining cars and `one object of the invention y is to provide a check holder which is so conw structed that the checks maybe easily placed upon or removed from the holder and at the saine time prevented from being' accidentally disconnected from the holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a check holder including a check en gaging clement and a back plate or support having the check carrier connected therewith in an improved manner and securely held in engagement With the back plate.
Another object of the invention is to so construct v. the baclcplate that it includes y side anges forengaging the Wall of a mine car and further includes a seat tor the check carrierythis seat `being so formed that its inner -face' Will also engage the face of the mine car and thus prevent the back plate itrom having any tendency towards tilting: and further prevented from being readily bent out'of shape or broken loose.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a check holder in which the baclrplate for the check carrier` is provided With an ex,- *tension forming a guard iiangevvhich Will serve to protect the check carrierand prevent `it from l being struck by obstructions in theinine While the mining car is in motion. Another object ofthe invention is to provide'a check holder in which the back plate rier formed from a length of Wirebent. to the desired shape. y y
"*Another object of the invention is to so construct this check holder that the fastento Aers/Which retain the check carrier in the seat formed inthe back plate may also serve as fasteners "for passing" through the Walls ofi" the' mine car and securing the back plate in position upon the car.
This invention isillustrated in the accoin panying drawings, wherein; rFigure 1 is a vieu7 showing the check check holder and the portion of the car being shown in elevation.
check holder in front elevation. y
`holder applied to a portion of a car, the y Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View taken alongthe line of Fig. 2.
Figure 4L is a transverse sectional vievv taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
This improved check holder is provided with a back plate l which is orinedof rather f heavy sheet metal and is bent tok provide a guard flange 2 Which extends from one side of the back plate. `The metal at the oppo site side and upper and `lower ends of the back plate has been bent tov provide a rear-` Wardly extending flange 3 Which is to`engage the outer face of the Wall 4 of the mine car 5. When this back plate 1 `is formed, the sheet metal blank; yfrom which it is formed is punched to provide openings 6 to receive the fastener bolts 7 and the blank is then bent to provide a depression forming a longitudinally extending seat 8 having side extensions 9 extending from its opposite sides adjacent its upper and lovver end and extendiiigabout the openings 6. From any inspection of Figs. 3 and 4l it Will be readily seen that the rear or inner rfaces of these seats andside extensions, Will engage the outer face of the car Walls and Will thus providemeans to assist in' bracing and strengthening the plate and also assist in holding the plate against any"` tendency to- Wardsa tilting movement.`
`The carrier for the check 10 is `formed upper andlower ends of the stem isbent to provide opppositely extending side arms 12'Which are in theform of eyes for fitting into the side extension 9 of the seatS and extending about thev opening 6 of the-back plate. `Theend portionsjoil the Wire are then bent to `:form the arms 13 yand 14, the arm 13 havingvits It'reeend portion bent in- WardlyA to prov-idel a bill li-tvhich`V extends i l 60 Figure 2 is a view showing the improved 1 having siffle extensions extending about fee 1 the seat about the 'openings in `the hack `tener receiving openings in the heck plate, pate, and fasteners passing through the the inner fece of the pressed in portion enside arms and openings ofthe hack plate. l0
