Be it known that I, GEORGE H. VVoMELs- DORF, a citizen ofthe United Statesresiding in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Machines for hialring Paper Tubes, of whichthe following is a specification.

This strip guide includes a relatively sharp edge 30 parallel with and immediately adjacent the nearest portions of the two rolls 10 and 11 and carries a series of frusto-conical pressure rolls 31 positioned to engage the strip or tube on the roll 11 when this is desirable.
The guide structure 29 is mounted on one end of a tubular member 32slidable in a guideway 33 and designed fol-the reception of one end of a plunger 34 whose opposite end carries a roller 35 cooperating with a cam 36 on the shaft 26, there being a spring 37 within the member 32 acted on by the plunger 34. lVith this construction the strip guide 29 under certain conditions is yieldingly pressed toward the roll or mandrel 11 so that its rollers 31 forcibly press upon the surface of a strip being wound on said mandrel.
Immediately under the table 28 is mounted an adhesive container 40 having within it a roll 41 constantly immersed to a greater or less extent in the adhesive and engaging the surface of a second roll 42 mounted on a pair of arms 43 pivoted coaxially with the first roll 41 ;the arrangement being such that the roll 42 may be moved into and out of engagement with the strip being wound upon the mandrel 11.
For actuating the swinging arms 43 and moving the roll 42 into and out of operative position, I provide a lever 44 pivoted to a suitable supporting standard 45 and having one end connected to said arms 43 while its second end carries a roller 46 cooperating with a cam 47 on the cam shaft 26;the arrangement being such that said lever is periodically swung on its fulcrum to accent plish the result desired.
In order to trim the ends of a tube wound on the mandrel 11, I provide a forked lever 48 fulcrumed on a standard 4 and having journalled in its branches two short spindles 49 and 50 respectively having fixed to them rotary cutters 51 and 62 so positioned as to cooperate with the mandrel l1 zuljzu-ent the ends thereof in cutting or trimming the tube wound thereon. The spindle 49 For the cutter 51 is operat-ively connected to the spindle 50 through an intermediate spindle 53 and two universal joints, and said spindle is driven from the shaft 5 through a pair of coacting gear wheels 54 and 55.
That end of the lever 48 distant from that supporting the cutters carries a'roller placed to cooperate with a cam 57 on the cam shaft 26, so that at certain predetermined intervals said lever is turned on its fulcrum and its cutters 51 and 52ers caused or are in process of operating upon a previously fed strip, I provide a stop in the form of a finger 6O normally projecting across the table 28 to a greater or less extent immediately adjacent the roll 10. This stop is carried upon the end of a vertically ertending rod 61 whose lower end is connected to a lever 62 fulcrumed to a standard 68 on the base 1 and having its opposite end extended in position to cooperate with a cam 64 on the shaft 26.
The mandrel 11 is preferably tubular and has a number of closely spaced, substantially radial passages 66 extending from its external surface into its cavity 67 whose outer end is closed by a plug 68 and whose inner end communicates through an axial passage 69 and radial passages 70 in the shaft 5, with a relatively fixed hollow collar 71 whose cavity in turn is connected to any suitable exhausting device such as a suction pump or fan.
Under conditions of operation the driving pulley '7 is turned by power from a suitable source so that the shafts 5, 6 and 26 are continuously rotated, as are also the spindles 49 and 50 with their associated cutters. At the beginning of a cycle of operations the cams on the shaft 26 are so designed and arranged that the adhesive applying roller 42 is held out of engagement with the mandrel 11 by the action of the sprii'ig 73, the guiding member 29 is in such a position that its pressure rolls 31 are clear of said mandrel or but lightly engaging the same, the cutters 51 and 02 are in their lower positions out of engagement with the mandrel, the stop 60 is raised above the table 28 and the lever 12 is in such a position that the upper roll 10 is spaced from the mandrel 11.
The blanks employed in my machine are preferably strips of paper of predetermined length having a circular curvature, and one of these after being placed upon the table 28 in the position indicated in Fig. i), is led between the rolls l0 and 11, just as the cam 25 so acts on. the toggle lever 18 as to depress the lever 12 and move the upper one (it said rolls toward the other. As a consequence, the strip is gripped and as it is drawn between the rolls, its end is directed downwardly around the roll or mandrel 11 by the sharp edge 30 of the strip guide 29, so that it passes between the latter and the pressure rolls 81. At the same time the air is exhausted from the interior of the mandrel 11 through the collar 71 so that th s end of the strip is drawn and held in close engagement with the tapered surface of the roll and as it passes under the roller 42, this is depressed into engagement with it thereby applying to its external surface adhesive received "from the gathering roll 41 for which purpose the can) 47 depresses the adjacent end of the lever 44 so as to swing the arms J ll) e to the best advantage.

As a consequence the ex ternal surface of the finished. body 0& has no paste applied to it.

The combination in a tube forming machine of a supporting structure; two coacting tapered rolls thereon; means for driving the rolls; a device for curving a striparound one of the rolls after it is fed betweenthe same; and means for fastening together they overlying layers of the strip woundon said the rolls; a device for curving a strip-around,
one of the rolls after it is fed between it and the other roll; the same consisting of a guide ad acent the coating portions of the rolls and means for bodily moving said device toward and from one of'the rolls.

The combination in a tube winding machine of a pair of coacting rolls; u'ieaus directing a length of strip material around one of the rolls after it has been passed between said rolls; cam shaft; means for driving the rolls and the camshaft; a series of pressure rolls mounted to enact th one of said first rolls; a structure carrying: said pressure rolls; and a cam on the cam shaft for causing said structure with its rolls to be periodically moved into and out of enacting position.
12. The combination in a tube winding machine of a pair of eoacting rolls; a cam shaft; a lever operative upon one of said rolls to vary its distance from the other roll; and acam on the cam shaft for periodically turning the lever on its fulcrum to vary the separation of the two rolls.

The combination in a tube winding machine of a pair of coacting rolls of which one has a series passages opening on its surface and connected to an air exhausting device; a cam shaft; means for directing; around one of the rolls a piece of strip ma terial fed between said rolls; a cam on the cam shaft controlling said directing means; a device for applying adhesive to a strip; a second cam on the cam shaft for governing); the operation of said latter device, cutters for trimming the ends of a tube on one of the rolls; and a third cam on the cam shaft for controlling the oper: tion said cutter.

The combination in a tube winding machine of a pair of coasting rolls of which one has a series of passages opening on its surface and connec ed to an air exhausting device; a cam shaft; means for directing around one of the rolls a piece of strip material fed between said rolls; a cam on the cam shaft controlling said directing means; a device for applying adhesive to a strip; a second cam on the cam shaft for governing the operation of said device; cutters for trimming; the ends of a tube; a third cam on the cam shaft for controlling the operation of said cutters a device for moving one of the rolls into and out of position to cooperate with the other roll; and a fourth cam on the cam shaft for controlling the operation of said last device.
15. The combination in a tube windingmachine of a pair of coacting rolls; means for guiding a strip of material around one of the rolls after it has been passed between said rolls; and a stop for preventing the introduction of a second sheet between the rolls until the finished tube has been removed from its supporting roll.
16. The combination in a tube winding machine of apair of coax-ting tapered rolls: a table adjacent the line of coaction of the rolls; means for directing a strip of material fed from the table ound one of the rolls; and an automatic stop operative adjacent the table for preventing the introduction of a second sheet until the tube has been removed from the roll on which it is wound.
