IMPROVEMENT IN PEANUT-HEATERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,108, dated October` 2S, 1873; application filed u August 22, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL KELLoeG, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented an Improve ment in Portable PeanutHeaters, of which the following is a specication:

This invention has for its object to provide a basket or other receptacle in which peanuts, freshly roasted, may be kept hot, and provided with lmapsaek-sliugs, so that the basket can be carried around by a street-vender or peddler, who can thus choose the most available places to dispose of' the nuts without being obliged to employ a vehicle to move his stock and heating apparatus from place to place. The invention consists in the peculiar con struction and arrangement of the various parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, A represents the body of an oval basket, provided with an elliptic and concave sheetmetal bottom, B, and a hinged cover, C, which may be of' sheet metal, with a square of glass or mica secured in an opening therein, through which the contents ofthe basket maybe inspected. D is an elliptic ring having a gudgeon at each end, pivoted through metallic plates a, in the major axis of the basket, one of the gudgeons being provided with a crank, b, by which the ring may be rotated. There are two ilanges or blades, D', one being secured to the edge of' one-half the ring, and the other to the opposite edge of the other half, so that when the ring is rotated on its axis the peanuts contained in the basket will be thoroughly'mixed up. E is a sheet-metal flange secured to the bottom of the basket, to which flange is secured, by a of' position in the basket. The lamp-chamber may also be provided with a glazed or mica-cov ered opening, through which the interior may be inspected. The lian ge E has Jfitted within it a sheet-metal diaphragm, H, having a rectan gular opening, in which the ends of metallic blind-slats I are pivoted. To the edge of each slat is pivoted a rod, d, extending through the flange E. By pulling out this rod the slats will be opened to allow the heat of the lampfiamc to impinge upon the bottom of the basket and keep the contents warmed. By pushing the rod d inward, the slats will be closed, and thus prevent the further heating of the bottom.

The basket is provided with a knapsacksling, J, by which it may be slung upon the back of the peddler or street-vender, who can thus carry about his stock of roasted peanuts, ready for delivery, hot, from place to place, wherever he can find ready sales.

In lieu of' the venetian slats, a plain slidevalve may be employed, if preferred. The body of the basket may also be made of sheetmetal, if' desired.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A peanutheater consisting of the body A, bottom B, cover C, flanged stirring-ring D D', crank b, flange E, diaphragm H, provided with the slats I, base-chamber F, lamp G, and sling J, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
