PHOTOGRAPH FRAME.
Application filed February 2'2, 1922. Serial No. 539,648.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY EDMONDS, subject of the King of Great- Britain, residing at Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photograph Frames, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in photograph and like frames and refers more particularly to that type of frame comprising a suitable back-plate surrounded by detachable cl-section members anchored thereto, the arrangement being such that when it is desired to remove or insert a photograph from or into the frame. one or more of the detachable members is or are removed, thus allowing the said operation to take place, after which the said member or members is or are replaced in position and again attached to the said bacl:plate.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction of photograph frame of this type.
According to the present invention we provide a photograph frame of the type referred to having corner socket members adapted to embrace the ends of the U-shaped members, the said socket members being either separate from, attached to, or integral with the aforesaid U-shaped members.
Further features of the invention will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 shows a rear elevation of one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a part cross-section takenupon the line 22, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a front elevation showi of the corner socket members and one of 1 U-shaped members detached.
Figure ,4 is a plan and edge view of the blank from which the bod of one of the corner socket members is formed.
Figure 5 is a plan and side elevation of tie tail portion of one of the corner socket members.
Figure 6 is a rear view of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 7 is a similar vi to Figure 6 but showing one of the end i. -shaped members and its retaining clip, and also one side member detached.
Figures 8, 9 and 10 are respectively a plan, front elevation and end elevation, of one of the bridgemembers detached from the back-plate.
Figure 11 is a detail view on line 111l Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows the application of the member shown in Figures 8, 9 and 10 to the frame.
In carrying out this invention as shown at Figures 1-5 the frame comprises five main parts, via, the back plate 1 and four detachable side members 2 of el-shape in cross-section which surround the said backplate. The ends of these U-section members are mitred, as is clearly shown at Figure 3, so that when the frame is assembled they fit snugly together to form a neat joint.
Fitting over each corner of the frame is a socket member 3 to the rear face of which a tongue piece 4 is attached.
Secured to the back-plate at suitable points adjacent each corner thereof are members 5 with which the said tongue pieces engage as will be explained hereafter. These members are preferably formed from E-Shaped blanks stamped out from sheet metal, these blanks being bent up so that the transverse portions of the same form bridges 6 which stand away from the backplate when the side portions of the blank rest upon the latter. To secure these members to the back plate the-extremities 17 of the side portions of the blanks are bent into a plane at right angles to that of the blank as seen at Figures 9 and 10 and passed through the back-plate, being then bent over upon the other side as is clearly shown at Figurell, thus firmly securing the members in position.
To assemble the frame. the detachable side members 2 are placed. in position around the glass 19 (photograph not shown), cardboard sheet 20, and. the black plate 1 and, the socket members 3 passed over the corners of the frame, so as to embrace the adjacent ends of the detacl'iable side members, the tongue pieces of the socket members passing beneath the bridges formed by the members attached to the back-plate as is clearly seen at Figure 1. All that is necessary to lock the socket members 3, and thus the detachable side members 2, is to bend the BX- which the tongues pass and are then bent back as aforesaid. These members may also be formed from any other shapedblanlc or 111 any other sultable manner andinayralso be attached to the back-plate by any other suitable means, the above described members and method of attachment thereof being given onlylliiyway of illusJra-tion. i
The cornersoeketamembers-3 are preterably formed from suitably shapedblanks 7, such aslshown at F igure 4:, stamped :from sheet metal, and the tongue pieces attached thereto by soldering or by providing same with :laterally projecting ears 8 'whichare bent up at right angles and passed through slots in :the socket member, ibeing then turned over on tothe samethus firmly securing. the tongueinposit-ion.
In! thev modified .formof the invention as shown-at Figures 6-=and7 t-he'frame comprises a back-plate surrounded by four U- sect-ion members,.ina similar manner to that above described. The twosendiinembers 10 are providediat their extremitieswvith socket members -11 :rigidlyattached thereto and which :are adapted, when the frame 'lSuflS- sembled, to embrace the ends of the side U- sectio-n members ,l2,-t-lrusi firmly holding the latter in: position, so that theyiare prevented from moving either laterally ornlongitudinally. The end Emembers '10 may be "anchored to the bacleplate; in-any suitable ma nner, but itispreferred to effect this attachmentbyrneans ofU-shaped'clips 13 which embrace the said end membersiand which are provided with tongue pieces 14 adapted-to be passed beneath .bri-dges :15 'carried by members 16 mounte'd upon thecback plate, and then to be bent-back uponrthemselves :as
shown at the leftof Figure 6, thus securely attaching the aforesaid end members to the back-plate o By the use of the construction abovedescribed only two attachment members'are required instead of four as in the first described construction as the side U-section members 12 are held in position by the said end members 10.
' Instead of both the members '10 carrying the corner sockets being detachably secured to the back-plate by the tongue members as above described, only one may be so secured, the other member being permanently secured toltheback-plate in any suitable manner.
Having fully described my invention, whatllrdesire to; clai \and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A photo-frame comprising a backgplate, Ursection ;members surrounding said backplate, and means torsecurin-g theuU-section members to o the hack-plate ecomprisin-g bridge :members carried by theback-plate and tongue. pieces associated with sai'd'U- shaped members adapted to-engaga the said b-ri ,d members.
2. A photograph frame] comprising a. luck-plate,ll-section members surrounding the said back-plate, corner soeket members which embrace the ends oi the l u section members, tongue pieces carried by the :corner socket members, bridge membersvoarried by the back-plate rfi/Ild means for -.en-gagin g the tongue pieces with the bridee members to reta in the corner socket-members in position.
8. A photograph frame comprising :a ,backpl ate, ,U-section r members surrounding the saidback-plate, detachable -.corner socket members formed from sheet-metal blanks which embrace the ends (.ofthe .U section members, tongue oieces, sears upon. ,the tongue pieces whereby thelatter .areseeured to corner socket :members -and bridgememv bers carried by the back-plate beneath which the tongue piecesare passed :and-bentback upon themselves in orderto retain-,tha'cornor socket 111811117613: in position.
In testimony whereofl haveghereunto set my Ehand in presence ot' rt-wo subscribing witnesses.
