TOY.

T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, osnrrr A. Barman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Toy of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys and it has more particular reference to that type or form thereof which simulate a maritime vessel, the primary object being to provide a toy of the kind referred to which is of novel construction and that may be self-propelled, moved about under the action of wind or air currents or trailed about as desired.

Another object is to provide a toy simu lating a maritime vessel which is both attractive in appearance as well as entertaining and instructive in use, whilst said toy may be equally well used on land or in water.

With the foregoing objects in view my invention consists esentially of a toy simulating a maritime vessel which is suppor ed amidships upon wheels that may be spring influenced in one direction for the self-pro pulsion of said toy, whilst the vessel is provided astern with a swiveling castor that serves as a rudder for directing or influencing the direction of travel.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing constituting a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference designate the same parts in both views.

Figure 1 is a deck plan View of my improved tow with part broken away and in section better to disclose the underlying structure; and

Figure 2 is a starboard elevation of the same.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 3 designates the hull of my improved maritime or land toy, said hull 3 being fitted with a gunwale 4:, mast 5, mainsail 6 and foresail 7, the latter being adjustable by means of a halyard 8. The bowsprit is characterized by the reference numeral 9 and it may conveniently have a pull cord 10 connected thereto by means of. which the toy may be drawn about.

Pivotally mounted astern below the deck 11 at 12 is a swivelling castor 13 that serves dual functions of supporting the toy on an even keel as well as in a measure directing its course either on land or in the water.

Journaled transversely of the hull 3 in appropriate bearings 14 is a shaft 15 having wheels 16 rotatably mounted thereon, said wheels being free to revolve independent of the shaft 15 in one direction, for example to the right hand but adapted to lock thereto when rotated or turned in a reverse direction or to the left hand. Coiled freely about the aforesaid shaft 15 is a spirally wound recoil spring 17 one end 18 whereof is fixed into the wall of a pocket or cut out portion 19 in the hull S whilst the other end is fixed at 20 to the [said shaft 15. Now it will be readily understood that when the shaft -15 is turned by the wheels 16 to the left hand or in a contra-clockwise direction the spring 1'? will be wound up and when said wheels 16 a e released the spring 17 will recoil and serve to drive the wheels 16 in a clockwise direction whereby the toy will be forwardly propelled whether on land or in water, In either case the sails 6, 7 will aid in its propulsion whilst the castor 13 will assist in directing its course.

From the foregoing it will be clearly seen that by my invention 1 have provided an. exceedingly simple, cheap and entertaining toy the details of construction whereof may be vari d according to its size; and the ht is hereb' reserved to malre such ml or changes and variations as fairly lie within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A toy of the type hereinafter described simulating a maritime vessel having a hull portion provided with a pocket having end and side walls, a shaft journalled in the side walls of the pocket, wheels on said shaft, a spiral spring about said shaft having one end secured thereto and the other end secured in one of the side walls of said pocket, and a swivelling castor provided astern said vessel.
