SPACER FOR REENFORCING BARS.
Application filed November 29, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VTILLIAM B. iiOUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spacers for Reenforcing Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for spacing the steel bars employed to reenforce concrete floors and other" structures. Such bars must be supported at the proper distance from the form-work and must be securely held at the desired distance from one another.
The object of the present invention is to provide a spacer of the type stated which is capable of ei'liciently performing each of its various functions and which may be manufactured expeditiously and without waste of material.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmental side elevation of one form of spacer embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. W
519;. 3 is an under side view. Fig. is a detail view of one element of the construction illustrated herein.
A indicates the formwork upon which a concrete floor or the like is to be constructed and B is one of the reenforcing bars. The bars may, of course, be of any desired crosssectional form. They are spaced apart from one another at distances determined by the load and span, are supported so that they shall be embedded in the desired plane in the floor, and are secured against displacement, by means comprising a suitable number of spacers each of which comprises a longitudinal member folded to provide a leg or gage beneath each bar. While the longitudinal member may be of any suitable character, l have herein shown a longitudinal member 1 consisting of a strip of band iron. The means for supporting the reenforcing bar at the desired distance from the formwork consists of a leg or 2 formed by folding the longitudinal member, the leg or gage being located directly below the bar.
In order to prevent the gage from uufolding or spreading and to fasten the reenforcing bar in place, I provide a member 3 made of an integral piece of wire folded to form tWo loops 4:, an intermediate portion 5 and two arms 6, the loops t and arms 6 Serial No. 264,510
extending in opposite directions from the. intermediate portion 5. At opposite sides of the leg or gage :2 are formed openings to receive the loops 4-. in the present instance these openings are shown as formed at 7 approximately midway between the opposite edges of the member 1. flier the loops 4; have been inserted into the openings '7 said loops are bent in opposite directions so as to provide shoulders to prevent separation of the member 3 from the member 1. l-Vhen the member 3 is in place, the intermediate portion 5 spans the space between the two sites of the folded leg or 2 and thus ties said sides together and prevents the leg or gage from spreading or unfolding.
The spacer i completely asse bled at the factory, the arms (3 being bent or twisted into engagement with. the reenforcing bar after the bar has been laid in place upon the formwork.
It will be apparent that the member 3 may be readily formed from wire by means of automatic machinery and without any "waste whatsoever.
I claim as my invention:
1. A spacer for reenforcing bars consisting of a longitudinal member folded to form a to underlie a reenforcing bar and space said bar from the formwork, said member having openings at opposite sides of the fold, and an element formed from an integral piece of Wire and comprising an intermediate portion, and. two loops, the latter extending through said openings and bent at the lower side of the longitudinal memher to secure the wire element in place, said. element further comprising two upwardlyextending arms adapted to embrace and lock the reenforcing bar in place.
2. A spacer tor reenforcing bars compris ing longitudinal member having a fold therein forming adapted to underlie a reenforc' bar and space said bar from the formworlr, said member having openings therein on opposite sides of the age; and an integ tie member having an intermediate portion extendingthrough said openings and spanning ,he gage, and end portions adapted to surround and embrace a reenforcing bar, said tie member having shoulders engaging the opposite sides of the gage and also the under side of the longitudinal member whereby to hold the tie member in position upon the longitudinal member for the reception of the reenforcing bar and to restrain the gage from spreading when sub jected to Weight.
3. A spacer for reenforcing bars comprising a longitudinal member having a fold therein forming a page adapted to underlie a reenforcinp; bar and space said bar from the formwork, said member having openings therein at opposite sides of the gage and a tie element formed Wholly of Wire and having means adapted to engage the opposite sides of the gage and the under sideo'f the longitudinal member With upstanding end portions adapted to surround and embrace a reenforcing bar placed over the gage, said means being adapted to restrain the page from spreading and to hold the tie n ember in upright position for the reception of the reenforeing bar.
4. A tie element for securin a reenforcing; bar to a spacer bar hzwingr a gage member formed therein With openings at opposite sides thereof; said element comprising an intermediate portion, a pair of loops, and a pair of end portions adapted to surround and embrace a reenforcing rod placed over said gage, said loops being adapted to be entered through the openings in the bar and bent laterally in opposite directions so as to engage with the under side of thebar at opposite des oi? the with the intermediate portion spanning the gage. p
A spacer for reentorcing bars comprising a longitudinal member having; a downwardly extending portion adapted to underlie a reenforcing bar. and space said bar -from the ,formwork, said member having a slot formed therein Which extends into said downwardly extending portion to form a transverse notch therein, and an integral tie element formed of Wire adapted to secure a reenforcing bar to said longitudinal membeijsaid tie element comprising an intermediate portion adapted to rest in said notch, a pair of loops adapted to be bent laterally and engage the under side of said longitudinal member on opposite sides of said downwardly extending; portion and a pair of end portions adapted to surround and embrace said reenforcin e; rod whereby said reeni' orc ing rod is fastened in position above said downwardly extending portion.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
