To @ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, BnYaN'r H. BLOOD, a citizen ot the United tats, residing` at Hart-tord, in the county ot Hartford and State ot Connecticut, have invented certain new and uset'ul llmprovements in Gauges, oi.: which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gauges and par ticularly to plug gauges preferably or" the go and not go type adapted to measure circular openings to determine accurately when such Openings are of a predetermined dimension. lt is Jthe primary object ot the invention to provide an improved gauge ot this general type.
lt is an object of the invention to provide simple and improved means for securing' the gagging heads to the gauge handle and other improved means for preventing relative rotation ot the gagging heads and handle.
A further object ot the invention is to provide a gauge ot the ltype defined coinprising,` few and simple parts, inchuling a pair ot disks or plates mounted in the gaging head, such parts being adapted to be easily manufactured and assembled with a minimum ot time and expense and providing, when assembled, a gauge oi1 a very rigid and substantial character.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved supporting means comprising a pair of disks or plates in the ing head, means tor preventing relative movement or distortion of the plates within the head, and means engaging the plates and gauge handle for mount-ing the head on the handle in either ot' two reversible positions. f n
lV ith the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings wherein:

The present invention involves particularly the production or a plug,l gauge pret erably of the reversible type having a gaging head provided therein with a pair ot' disks or plates and means extending` from one or both disks to the gauge handle for securing the head to the handle. The disks may be permanently or otherwise secured within the head and the handle may be securedy thereto in any convenient and desirable manner.
As yillustrated. in Figs. 1, 5 and l0, the disks are permanently secured within the head, while Fig. 7 illustra-.tes the disks detac-hably secured within the head. Means preferably provided in certain ot these constructions 'for preventing,Y relative movemen-t and distortion ot the disks. Mea-ns are also provided t'or preventingl the rotation ot' `the handle relative to the head and in Figs. l, 5 and l0, this means comprises a recess or recesses in the disks tor receiving a projection or projections on the handle. The several parts comprising the invention are very simple whereby the saine may be inexpensively and easily manufactured and when assembled will provide a very suite able and substantial gauge ol the type defined.
Referring particularly to Figs. l to l ot the drawings, Fig. l illustrates one end oit a go and not go plug gauge or, it desired, the gauge may be provided with a gaging head on one end only thereof. ln the drawings, l designates the gauge handle and 9. the gaging head. rlhe head is adapted to be secured to the handle b v :means ot a pair of disks or plates 3 illus trated as separate elements wedged within a central opening` e in the head. rlhis open-- ing,l comprises two outer openings or portions 411 and 4b in each end of the head, such. portions being preferably tapered inwardly whereby the disks may be securely wedged tierein.

the typeherein delined comprises the hard ening of the gauge head 2. During this opl eration the head usually goes slightly out of round. The disks 3 are finished round and are not hardened. When the disks are forced into the gauge head, they tend to correct the distortion of hardening, soi round up the gauge head, and also serving to expand the gauge head so that variations in shrinkage during hardening may be compensated tor. ln practice, a very small amount of metal is lelft on the outside oii'the gauge head for grinding and lapping, and
thed'isks are forced in under an arbor press to expand the ring and give just stock enough for finishing. ln the inished gauge head, vthe disks are permanently secured trictionally within the ring 2.
lt is quite desirable that the dis rs be held from relative movement or distortion since such movement would appreciably erfect the accuracy of measurement ot' the head 2. To prevent such distortiornl provide the disks with means, as a plurality of screw vthreaded members.l 8, threadedly engaging one of the disks and bearing against the other disk. ln practice each-of` these membersisthreaded into one of the disks until the other end thereof engages the other disk with the desired pressure, whereupon the member is cut oil' flush with the disk.
l have illustrated the gaging heads as secured to the handle by means of a bolt 5 passing through holes 8a in the disks and screw threaded into a bore 5fL in the handle, one disk being engaged by the boltl head and Vthe other being engaged by the end oi' the handle. The screws 8 prevent the distortion otl the disks by the bolt 5. Means nlor preventing the rotation o1" the head relative to the handle comprises inter-engaging projections and recesses between the head and handle. As illustrated, the handle is provided with a plurality of angular projec-y tions 6 havingsloping sides 6 and 6b adapt" ed to engage corresponding recesses 7 in the adjacent disk 3. By arranging the projections as illustrated, the same may be formed on the handle by three milling cuts across the handle taken on the dot and dash lines shown in F ig. 4t. Preferably the `recesses l arefforined in bothdisks which may be whereby the gaging head is adapted to. be reversibl'y mounted on the handle. Thus when the forward end or' the gauge head becomes worn the head may be reversibly mounted ony the handle whereby the opposite and unworn end oi the head be comes the forward end oi' the gauge.
The gage illustrated in Figs. 5 and (l is like that just described except that further means has been provided for holding the plates or disks against relative movement and distortion. This means also comprises plurality ot members, as the bolts 9,
threadedly engaging one disk and bearing against the other disk, the heads 9 of the bolts bearing against the outer disk 3 and the bolts threaded by engaging in the other disk ldy 'this construction, the parts are not only prevented from distortion inwardly by the members 8, but are also pre shoulders ll. The head is adapted to be secured to the venge handle l2 by means of a pair ot plates l and la and a plurality of Screws l5 tor connectingk the plates together. The handle is provided with an annular shoulder f1.6 to which is secured the plate lli by means of rivets li". A lug 18 secured to the plate le is adapted to engage in a notch 19 in one ci the shoulders il to prevent ro tation oi the head on the handle. lt will be seen that the plates lil and 1d are adapted to be drawn into tight engagement with the shoulders ll by means of thel screws l5 and since the handle is rigidlysecured toone of the plates, the gaging head is adapted there by to be rigidly mounted on the handle.
ln `Fig. 9 is illustrated another manner ot securing one oit' the supporting plates to they handle. The plate 20 herein. is provided with a hub 2l and a pin 22 extending through the hub and handle secures the plate to the handle. rllhe portion 23 o't' the handle is preferably tapered as .illustrated.
ln lllig. l0, l have illustrated a modihed form of the invention wherein. the gaging head is secured to the handle through only one of the two disks. The gaging head 2 and the disks or plates 3 therein are the same as those heretofore described in relierence 'to Figs. l and 5. I No means for preventing relative distortiou of the disks is illustrated however since in securing the head to the handle only one of the disks'is engaged and there is no tendency to distort the disks by the holding means, as by the bolt 5 shown in Figs. l and The handle 24 substantially the same as the handle l, being provided 'with a threaded bore 2land three projections 25 at the end thereof for engaging corresponding recesses T in either disk 3.
