Application. filed April 29, 1918.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
lie it known that we, d l-lor'r linowri and Svara llononn? citizens oi' the llnitec States, said Brown residing` at 4llew York. in the county and State ot New l (post-oiiice addi-ess. l). 'U'. Bof; 119, New *fork7 N. 1.)? and said -orden res'i'idingi at Auburn, in the county of Providence, of Rhode lsland (post-oliice address. Francis Ave., Auburn, l), have inventeoa new and useiiul lmprovement in Foot "/obi.les, ot which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to toot mobiles.
yllhe objc-cts of this ii'iventiou are to ini prove and simpli'lfy the construction of auch devices as well as to increase their eiiiciency and durability in operation and to decreaafsc the expense attending- 1' their manufacture.-
illith the foregoing and other objet: in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combi.- nation and arrangement ot parts and. in the details or construction hereinater described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the particular embodiment oi" invention herein disclosed can made within the scope of the claimsy and indicated by the variations in said claims. without departing from the spirit ot the invention.
ln. the accompanying drawings part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view oit the im" proved foot mobile.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sideview partly broken away, of the rack, pinion and cam mechanism for operating the drive wheels in one direction.
liigure 4t is a detailed view of the cam chamber.
Figure 5 is a detailed view oi one of the cams.
Figure 6 is a view in elevation taken at a right angle to, and illustratingthe parts shown in Figure 3.
Figure 7 is a detail view showing a ratchet transmission device.
Like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the different views of the drawings.
rl`he foot mobile is constructed with a rear aXle 1, which is gripped or clamped by brackets 2, Figure 2, fixed on the rear ends 'forming Serial ll'O. 231,312.
oi" forwardly extending frame bars 3 3, which at their forward ends are tired to the bracket il. The steering column is pivotally connected in any suitable way, with the bracket l and is provided at its lower end with the steering wheel 6 and at its upper end with the steering handle 7.
The tooVv mobile is provided with a pair of individually operating foot platforms 8 8, each oi which is pivotally mounted at 9 on a bracket or saddle 10 fixed on one ot the trame bars 3.
ylFhe means tor normally elevating each platform 8 consists preferably of a coil spring i11 which at its lower end is seated on a block '1.2 and at its upper end engages the platform 8 to elevate it.
The :toot platforms 8 are intended to operate the drive wheels of the foot mobile in a forward direction. and the mechanism by which this result is accomplished will now be described.
Fired the under surface oi each Afoot plat m 8 adjacent the rear end thereoi" is a bracket 13 with which is pivotally conectcd a rack link The rack link 14 at its lower end is lined by means ot the screws 15 shown in Figure 3 to a quadrant shaped rack 16. rFhe axle 17 of the segment shaped rack 16 is pivotally connected by means of the axle link 18 with the rear axle 1 said link 18 being provided with a hub 19 which surrounds the axle 1, as shown in Figure 6. Tie link 18 holds the rack 16 at a uniform distance from the axle 1 and causes it to move in a circular path part-way down and under the rear aXle. o
The rack 16 intermeshes with a pinion 20 which is loosely mounted on the rear axle 1, one on each end. and is independent of the hub 19 and rotates independently thereof.
The pinion 20 is designed t0 operate in a one-way direction the drive wheel 21 which is loosely mounted on axle 1, by means ot the mechanism now to be described.
rl`he referenceI numeral 22 designates a cam chamber which is iixed to the drive wheel -21 and drives the same. Disposed radially in the cam chamber 22 as shown in Figures 3 and e is a plurality of cams 23, each of which is of the form shown in Figure 5 and comprises a slightly curved outer tace 2li, which is offset by means of Q 1,440 eve the shoulderand is provided with a second shoulder 26 and a reduced'inner end 27. The shoulder 26, as shown in Ti*`i.giues 3 and el, of each.. cam engages a rear shoulder 9.8 of the next adjacent cam. rlhe engagement of the shoulders 2G and 9.8 of the cams serves to lock said cams in a circularring which can not be broken in an outer dirention so long as the camsfarearrangedl in the full series as shown in Figures and The cam chamber 22, cams 23 and pinion 2O all constitute a oneswajv' mechanism, which servesthe function oil a drive mechanism.
The operation ot the 'device is follows. The operator stands on the toot platitorms'l and deprcsses them alternately or bothtogether or only `one' of them, las desired. The downward movement of cach platform` 8 is transmitted 'through the link 1i to the quadrant shapedrack 16 which beingl held by the pivot link 18 swings downward and underneath the axle`1, -giving several rotations vto the pinion 20. When the pressure on the foot-platform Sis released the spring` 'l il returns it to elevated position. The down ward movementot the rack 16 in Figure 8 drives the pinion 2O in the directon shown by the arrows in Figures f3 and fl. The teeth ot the pinion engage the inner end 9,7 ot the cams 23wand expand them'outward seas to grip the cam chamber 22 and digivethe same together with the drive wheel 2l. lVfhen the rack 16 has reached its downward limit and is restored to to its uppermost position by the spring 1l., the pinion 2O is rotated in a direction opposite to the arrows, with' the result that the teeth of the 'pinion rock the inner ends27 of the cams 23, so that the shoulder 26 'of the one vcam pivots on the shoulder 2S ot the next adjacent cam and the outer faces'Ql are rocked `or contracted inwardfso as to release their grip on the cam chamber 22.
The ootmobile of the present invention is strong, simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as thoroughly eicient in. operation. It lis capable of great speed and'ilexibility'in action and can be used for coasting, Yas well .as for driving by theuse orP one .toot or two feet. i
It will be obvious that in place of the cam drive wheel.
ing the upward movement ci? the pivot link 18 relative 'to the link 1li-and rackl@ 3' other wise the links 1aand 18 might move to a dead centre. The limiting means employed consists in bending the lower end oi' the link 14e at a right angle as indicated at 1li in Fig ure 3, so as to engage beneath the lower ed ot the pivot link 18. The limiting lif show-n clearly in the dotted lines in Figure lillhat is Claimed as new is l. toot mobile comprising an operating member pivo'ted at one end. a drive wheel, a link pivcted on the axle oll the drive vh' and reciprocatory thereon, a connection he* tween said link and the :tree end ot said operating member, and one-nay mechanism in4 terposed between said connection and said 2.
