To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOSEPH FELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Motor-Skates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to motor. skates, the
I object of the invention being to produce a device of the class described embodying novel driving mechanism whereby the whole weight of the operator may be utilized for propelling the skate.
A further object of the invention is to provide in combination with the frame of the skate, and driving means, brake mechanism arranged for convenient operation and not acting directly on either driving or steering wheel of the skate. thus saving the tires and front and rear wheel bearings.
With the above and other obJects 1n v1ew, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts,
as will hereinafter be more fullydescribed, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure l is a side elevation of a skate embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section illustrating the arrangement of parts of the driving mechanism. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section through the skate on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. F ig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the drop frame.
The main frame of the skate comprises substantially parallel top runs 1 arranged in spaced relation to each other as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and connected at their forward ends to the front fork members 2 and at their rear ends to the rear fork members 3, 4 designatingv the front driving wheel of the skate and 5 the rear steering wheel thereof, the wheel 4 being mounted in the fork 2 and the wheel 5 being mounted in the -fork 3.
Combined with the main frame thus far described is a drop framecomprisingfront and rear relativelyspaced downwardly extending members6 which are connected at their lower ends by a bottom support 7 ,the drop frame referred to being further supported by the braces 8 which extend from the bottom 7 thereof upwardly to a head therear fork 3 thus enabling said rear wheel 5 to be turned to one side or the other for steering the skate.
Operating above the bottom 7 of the drop frame is a vertically movable platform 12 upon which the operators foot is adapted to be placed. The platform 12 is provided with a downwardly extending post 15 which is slidable through a sleeve 16 extending vertically through the bottom 7 of the drop frame andhaving a fixed relation thereto. Surrounding the post 15 is a coiled expansion spring 17 of sufficient strength to lift the platform 12 when relieved of the weight of the riders feet, the upward movement of the platform 12 being limited by projections 18 on the platform 12 working in slots 18 in the members 6 of the drop frame.
The front driving wheel 4 is provided at opposite sides thereof with spur gear wheels 19which mesh with and are driven by other spur gear wheels 20 journaled on a cross shaft 21, each of said wheels 20 being provided with a brake drum 22 the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
J ournaled on the opposite ends of the shaft 21 are levers 23 which extend beyond the peripheries of the wheels 20 and have pivotally connected thereto at 24 links 25 which are pivotally attached at 26t0 the wvhen the lever 23 is moved upwardly.
When' the lever 23 moves downwardly, the said pinion is locked against rotation and therefore carries the periphery of the wheel 20 with it. In this way motion is imparted to the front driving wheel 4.
32 designates a U-shaped brake lever embodying two arms which extend downwardly on opposite sides of the main frame ofthe skate and are pivotally connected at 33 to the bottom 7 of the drop frame. From the arms of said brake lever 32 rods 34 extend forwardly where they are provided at their forward extremities with brake bands 35 which work in contact with the brake drums 22 hereinabove referred to. The arms of the lever 32 are connected at the top by a cross bar 36 within convenient reach of the operator who by pushing rearwardly there on may apply the brakes. Springs 37 con nect with the lever arms 32 and serve to hold the brakes normally out of engagement with the drums 22.
A foot holding strap 38 is secured to extensions 40 on the vertically movable platform 12 so that the foot of the rider is securely held to the platform and he is enabled to raise said platform assi'sted by the spring 17. The platform 12 may also if de sired be provided with side and end flanges 4:1 and 42, respectively, to assist in holding the riders feet firmly thereon.
' From the foregoing description it will now beunderstood that the rear wheelof the skate is used as the steering wheel and the driving mechanism connects with the front wheel, said driving mechanism being primarily actuated by an upwardly spring 7 thrust platform which isdepressible by the foot of the operator who may thereby impose his full weight on the platform for the purpose of propelling the skate.
