Be it known that i, .lf-inneren li. ARN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at hrichsville, in the county of rTuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful improvements in Rivet Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a pneumatic rivetcutter or more particularly to provide a rivet cutting attachment for a pneumatic hammer or tool of the pneumatic hammer type, whereby rivets, bo-lts and the like may be cut without exposing` the tool and the operator to the strains and effort which are incident to the use of a chisel and like conventional means of removing rivet heads, and without the risk incident to the conventional methods of forcibly projecting or propelling the detached rivet or bolt heads at the risk of other operatives by the final stroke of the tool; and with these general objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein z- Figure 1 is a view of a rivet cutting tool embodying the invention.

rThe apparatus contemplates primarily a pneumatic hammer construction of conventional type ncludiu a tubular guide 10 iny which operates the hammer piston or plunger l1 and a suitable stock. 12 having a grip 13 with which is connected the air inlet nipple i4, said stock being provided interiorly with any suitable form of means for effecting the usual and well known reciprocatory movement of the hammer or plunger and of which no speciiic illustration is deemed necessary,
lemovably mounted upon the guide 10 is a shell 15 having' a sleeve 16 to embrace said guide and adjustable to clamp the same and thereby secure the shell in a fixed relation to the guide by means of a bolt 17 or its equivalent, said sleeve being split as indicated to permit ofl the insertion of the guide thereinto, and at the extremity of the guide there is arrangedA a conventional clip 18 for holdingl a rivet-set shank or follower 19 of special form having a conical or wedge- 'shaped head 2O for spreading action with relationfto jaws 21 which are mounted in the shell and are connected by a pivot 22-hav ing a progressive movement in the shell by reason of the engagement of thelterminals thereof with'longitudinal guide groovesQS in the side wallsr ofthe shell. The advancement of thepivot pin with relation' to fthe guide grooves is preferably-yieldingly.induced by means of coiled springs Pfl ranged in said grooves around suitable guide pins 25 which extendl through` perforations in the extremities of the pivot pin, said grooves being pro-vided at their outerends with, stops 26 to limit the 'advance movement ofthe pin.l
The j aws areprovided at their inner ends with bevel l portions transversely co'ncaved. and cooperating to form a conical seat 27 for the conical head 2O of the follower, and the outer ends ofthe jaws carry preferablyk removable blades 2S directed toward each other in opposed relation and suitably beveled to extend under and operate jointly in removing the head or swaged end of a rivet suoli as indicated at 29 employed for example as the means of connection of boiler plates shown at 8O lin Figure 2. The blades may be secured in place by suitable screws 31 to permit of their replacement or removal forv sharpening or grinding.
Wfith the parts inthe positions indicated in lfigure 2 and the jaws extended beyond. the contracted outlet en(v 32 of. the shell and the jaws in spanning relation with the rivet to be cut as in Figure 2, the impact of the hammer against they inner end of the fol lower tends by reason of the cooperating conical head of said follower with the seat of the inner ends of the jaws tol spread the latter and thereby force the bladed extremities of the ljaws toward each other, and as pressure is applied to the pneumatic tool in the ordinary way to hold the jaws to their work, the closing movement of the bladed ends of the jaws will be accompanied by an advance movement of the hammer and the shell 15 with relation to the aws to the final position indicated in Figure 3. rlhe advance movement of the shell obviously is `accompanied by a spreading of the inner ends of the jaw members for the accommoda` tion of which the shell is enlarged laterally as shown at 33. lt will be obvious moreover that the advance movement of the shell with relation to the aws is accompanied by the compression of the springs 24, and when the tool is removed from the severed rivet the jaws are advanced with relation to the .be obvious that when therivet head or swage is detached it is not subject to propulsion violently or forcibly as when a cutting tool such as a chisel pneumatically or manually driven isused as the cutting tool and operates continuously infone direction, and from one side of the rivet. It has been found in practice that this forcible propulsion of the rivet head is liable to cause injury to other workmen engaged lin the vicinity 4of the operator of the rivet cutting tool and under some conditions to the rivet cutter.v
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 2-l l. A tool for the purpose described having in combination with a pneumatically driven hammer, a terminally tapered follower pin for actuation by the hammer and pivotally connected jaws provided at their v outer ends withopposed cutting blades and at their inner ends'with a tapered seat for engagement by the follower pin, said jaws being mounted .for 'joint longitudinal movement towards said follower pin.

A tool for the-purpose described having in combination with a pneumatically driven hammer, a terminally tapered follower pin for actuation by the hammer andv pivotally connected jaws provided at their outer ends with opposed cutting blades and at their inner ends with a tapered seat for engagement by the follower pin, and a jaw guiding shell carried by the hammer stock and having guides for directing the joint longitudinal movement of the jaws towards said follower pin.

A tool for the purpose described having yin combination with a pneumatically driven hammer, a terminally tapered follower pin for actuation by the hammer and pivotally connected jaws provided at their outer ends with opposed cutting blades and at their inner ends with a tapered seat for engagement by the follower pin, anda shell carried by the hammer stock and embracing the inner ends of said jaws, the walls of the shell being provided with guide grooves for the reception of the terminals of the jaw connecting oivot, and springs being disposed to yieldingly resist the inward movement of the jaws with relation to the shell.

A tool for the purpose described having in combination with a pneumatically driven hammer, a terminally tapered follower pin for actuation by the hammer 'and pivotally connected jaws provided at their outer ends with opposed cutting blades and at their inner ends with a tapered seat for engagement by the follower pin, and a shell provided with means for detachable engagement with the stock of the hammer and having longitudinal guide grooves for the reception of the 'extremities of the jaw connecting pivot.
6. A rivet cutting tool' having, in combination with a pneumatic hammer provided with a tool guide, a follower pin provided with a tapered head, a shell provided with means for detachable engagement with the hammer lstock and extending in advance of and embracing the head of the follower pin, pivotally connected jaws disposed within the lshell with their inner ends provided with complemental seat members for the reception of the tapered head of the follower pin, said shell being provided with opposite longitudinal guide grooves for the reception and guidance of the eXtremitiesof the jaw connecting pivot pin, and springs arranged in operative relation with the said pivot pin for yieldingly advancing the jaws with relation to the shell.
