KNEE PROTECTOR.

Application led February `25, 1918.

To all w kom t may concern Be it known that I, DELIA F. ABRAHAMsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Knee Protectors, of which the folllowing is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to knee protectors. Soldiers in the trenches are frequentlyrequired to remain on their knees for long periods and this has been found to cause rheumatism or other diseases in the joints and sometimes abrasion of the skin or other injury. This also is destructive to clothing, particularly when the ground is wet.

One object of the invention is to provide a simple protector which is adapted to be worn without discomfort under the circumstances aforesaid and which will protect the linee against moisture and abrasion and to overcome the difficulties above set forth. .v

The invention consists in the novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

The entire protector is formed of thin flexible material, as distinguished from a stift' or padded device, so that while it is worn it will not cause any discomfort or interfere with entire freedom of movement of the wearer. The protector comprises a piece of waterproof fabric, such as thin water proofed canvas or other thin fabric 6, a lining of flannel 7 and an. interlining of flannel 8, which is disposed to extend over and furnish additional warmth and protection for the knee cap. To give` the protector the desired form, so that it will lit the linee comfortably, the fabric 6 and lining 7 are out into the shape shown in Fig. 2. lThe side portions of the fabric 6 and lining 7 converge laterally from the center to the ends, and a V-shaped notch or dart 9 is cut Serial No. 218,985.

into each end as shown and the edges 15 of these openings are then brought together and lapped so that the protector will have the desired fullness to receive and fit around the knee cap and front of the leg. The converging side or end portions will avoid any superfluous material on the sides and back of the leg, when the protector is on the person. The V-shaped notches terminate later'- ally of the center of they protector, so that that portion on which the leg will bear, when the wearer is kneeling, will not have any seams which might hurt the wearer. The waterproof fabric and lining are secured together near their margins by seams passing therethrough on the dotted line 16 and through a tape l0 kon the front face of the fabric 6, which serves as a reinforcement and prevents the seam from cutting the waterproof fabric. @rdinary thin cotton tape, which is freely flexible is adapted for .thispurpose To furnish additional protection over the linee and cap the front, and without rendering the protector sti1 or uncomfortable, a piece 8 of flannel, approxiu mately the shape shown in Fig. 4, is sewed between the waterproof fabric and the fiannel lining by a seam 12 which extends through the lining, but not through the waterproof fabric. Tapes 14 are extended over the seams l5 of the lapped edges of the openings 9 to serve as a cover for and reinforcement of said seams and the free ends of these tapes are of suiiicient length to be lapped around the leg to effectively and comfortably secure the protector in place.

The invention exemplifies a protector which is particularly designed to protect a person `from deseases of, and injuries to, the linee andwhich can be comfortably worn and does not interfere with free locomotion.
