Description

Patented Dec, 26,

I GARMENT TURNER.
Application filed September 18, 1920. SeriaI No. 411,133.
To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that-1, THOMAS, E. SCULLY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at *Los Angeles, in the county-ofLos' Eingeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Turners, of which the following is a specification. i t,
The present invention has reference to means employed "for turning gloves and other apparel right side out, after the sewing and finishing up of all the parts has been completed and is designed as an improve ment over the device forming the subject matter of U. 'S'. P. N. 1,208,388 granted under date of Dec. 12, 1916. I
The principal object ofthe presentinven tion is to provide a' device of the character specified wherein one of the apparel or glove supporting rodsis made sectional in character and adjustable to greater or shorter lengths at the will ofjthe operator;
An additional object is to provide an improved type of glove holder in which the movablerod of the apparatus is adjustably mounted through a support and spring-cushioned to yield easily under pressureas the operator forces the rods together tor r'e-.
versing the gloves;
With the above and other objects in view the invention may be said to reside generally in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will behereim after more fully pointed out and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein;
Figure l -is a side elevation 01": a device constructed in accordance with the invention, and I Figure 2 is a sectional view taken longitudinally oi the movable rod of the apparatus. I
' Referring now to the drawing the numeral 1 indicates the supporting frame or bracket, preferably a metallic structure and coiisist ing of an elongated "flat bar, having uuequal end portions 2 and 8 bent upwardly from the base as illustrated. The end 3 projects upwardly at about right anglesnnd is provided with terminal portions 4 inclined to the vertical and extending in parallelism,
with end 2 which is likewise inclined. The
bracket is adapted to be suitably fastened to a support and carry the glove holding members 5 and 6 both of which are arranged in axial alignment w th each other as shown.
Member 5 consists of a tapered stock having a threaded stud 5 inserted through end Qand fastened securely thereto by a nut 7; At the innermost end of the stock a cylindrical rod of slender proportion is formed, being connected to stock 5 by a beveled portion 8. The rod or stick 9 is of even diameter and provides a support upon which the thumb and fingers of a glove are successively placed, with the stitched or sewed side outermost. 7 9' The tapering body or stock 6 of the other member is rigidly fastened to the end 4 by means of a nut 10' which threads aboutthe threaded shank 11, projecting through the bracketend, This. stock is also provided with a smooth faced bore-l2 through which slides a stick or rod 13, the latter being provided with a beveled collar Miter abutment with the end of the stock to limit upward movement of the rod. The bore is enlarged adjacent the upper end of the stop'to provide a cushioning chamber 15 within'which is mounted a coiled spring "16 encircling the threaded end 17 of the slidable rod. In-
serted partially into the chamber is ajslee vev i 18 having an enlarged, shoulder forming annular head arranged for abutment with the end of stop projection 11. This sleeve is provided with a threaded bore so that it may be screwed upon the end of the slidable rod with its innermost end pressing against and compressing spring 16, asthe rod slides downwardly through thetapering stock or guide. The parts are held in position by means of a handle knob 19 screwed upon the threaded end of the slidable rod and abutting with the enlarged head of sleeve 18. The knob provides convenient grip means for permitting the rod 13 to be manually shifted up and down through the guide stock 6. The parts may be adequately lubricated through oil holesZO formed in the stock and lock nut 10. t i
In the operation oiithe device, after the stitchedglove has been arranged upon the being screw threaded upon the rod and ad justable it is obvious that the point of abutment may be varied so that the sliding rod may be brought to a'stop with its tapering v end 21 in spaced relation to the end of stick 9 or the ends may be permitted to Contact. Usually the rod is slid forward until it contacts with the opposite rod, the end of the thumb or finger portion of the glove being thus securely held between the two rods. Upon drawing the glove forward and over upon rod 13, the stitched portion of the finger supported upon the rod will be turned inwardly and the finished end outwardly. Upon releasing pressure on knob 19, spring '15, automatically shifts sleeve 18 outwardly, thus returning the rod 13 to starting position, as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. In this way, each finger and thumb of a glove is successively reversed, the enlarged body portions or stockst and- 6, in each case providing a convenientrest for the palm and wrist portion of the glove during the operation.
It is-to be noted that the movable holder of the device is comprised of parts easily separated and capable of being taken apart or put together whenever required. The spring tendsto return the rod to; its original position and the sleeve enables-the operator to control the movement of the rodeo that the stroke can be either lengthened or shortened.
It isbelieved that the advantages of-the adjustable rod structure tend to provide a more compact and simple structure capable of fast work and easy to operate.
Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A glove turning device comprising a support, an article receivingmember fixed at one end of the support, a second article receiving member detachably secured at the other end of said support, a rod slidably mounted in the second mentioned article receiving member, said second mentioned article receiving member consisting of a hollow tapering body provided with an enlarged chamber, a sleeve adapted to fit into the enlarged. chamber, said sleeve threaded on the said slidable rod and having an enlarged head provided at its outer end, a coil spring arranged in the enlarged chamber and encircling the sliding rod and having one end resting against the inner end of the threaded sleeve, and means arranged on the end of said sliding rod to actuate the same, and means carried by said rod to limit the return of said rod.
2. A glove turning device comprising a support, an article receiving member fixed at one end of the support, a second article receiving member detachably secured at the other end of saidsupport, said second'men' tioned article receiving memberconsisting of a tubular stationary member, a rod slidably mounted therein and having its ends extending beyond the ends of the said stationary tubular member, a spring associated with the rod for normally retaining the forward end of the rod. spaced from the stationary member, and means for limiting the sliding movement of the rod. in the tubular body.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses,
THOMAS E. SCULLY.
