ROUTING TOOL- Application filed July 25, 1921.- Serial No. 487,372.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. lvloCAnTY, citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of San dose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rout- I ing Tools, of which the following is a specil'ication.
My invention relates to a type of rout g tool particularly for usein setting hinges and similar devices which require a recessed bed.
In routing out the edge of a door or case ment window preparatory to mounting a hinge thereon, it is difiicult to form a bed of uniform depth and width because of the uncertain and varying characteristics of the wood being worked. ltis the object of the present invention to provide a device whereby a recess of uniform depth and width may be quickly formed in wood of any character.
It is a further object to provide a device of the character indicated that can be adjusted for varying widths of recesses and that 18 also adjustable for varying depths of recesses.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in an operative position, part broken away.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is an enlarged elevation of the cutter blade. 5
' Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 indicates a flat bar mounted on handle 2 and provided with a slot lengthwise thereof as at 3. At a I show a blade supportlng member provided with a slot 5, a bolt 6 carrying a wing nut 7 passing through slots 3 and 5 whereby the bar and supporting member may be adjusted longitudinally as desired.
Supporting member 4 is provided with spaced pairs ofears as 88 and 9-9 on one edge thereof, as shown to properly place the member on bar 1 and to serve as supports for the cutting blade. Extending upwardly on member 1- in an opposite direction to ears 8 and 9 and arranged between each pair of I cars, is a supporting element as 10 and 1 1 respectively, each element hav ng a vertically arranged slot formed therein as at 12 and 13. c
At 14: is shown a blade havinga slot 15 formed therein, and at 16 is a bolt engaging slots 12 and Band securely locking the said blade in position on element 10. Blade 14:
fits snugly between ears 8S andhas an outwardly and rearwardly extending cutting edge 17'. i i i i ln its practical application the head 18 of bolt 6 "operates'as a gauge, the said bolt being moved backward or forward until the space between it and the cutting edge 17 of the knife is the same as the required width of the recess, whereupon, the wing nut 7 is tightened. The depth of the cut is now determined by raising or lowering blade 14 and tightening up bolt 16.
ing been made a second cutis made along line 22and the narrow strip between the two cuts removed. Since the grain of the wood in a door or windowruns parallel with its longer'edge the cuts are across the grain and the narrow strip thus cut is readily removed. The first cuts having been made successive cuts are made as indicated by the parallel dotted lines 23 and the several strips removed. VVhen a sufiicient number of the strips have been cut out it will be found that a recess of perfectly uniform depth and width has been formed, only requiring a slight smoothing at the edge 2% to prepare it for receiving a hinge leaf. The roughness at edge 24-. 18 due of course to the fact that the,
cutting is across the grain of the wood and the short pieces between the successive cuts are merely broken away. The bar 1 should, of course, be wide and long enough to provide a solid bearing surface on the work.
The blade supporting member i is here shown with duplicate blade holding elements 10 so that the same may be reversed on bar 1, As shown in solid lines the device is arranged for a left-handed workman. For a right-handed workman the member 4 is arranged as shown in dotted lines at 25, in which case a right-handed blade must be used as at 26. T f
It may be seen from the foregoing that the device disclosed will quickly and accurately do the work required; it is adjustable for any depth and width of recess; it is readily adapted for use for a right or left-handed workman.
It is to be understood of course, that while I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, changes in form, cmlstruotion and xnethod of operm lie-n may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim A routing tool comprising a bar having a slot formed therein longitudinally thereof, a blade holder having; a s10; formed therein longitudinally thereof, means for engaging both of? said slots and locking; said bar and holder together, spaced pairs 01 ears formed on said holder 50 engage one edge of said ban". a blade supportingmeans upstanding on said holder between each pair of ears, and a vertically adjustable blade arranged on each blade supporting means.
