Application led November 26, 1920.
Be it known that I, SIDNEY J. V. Bovey, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark Plugs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in sparksplugs for internal combustion engines, and particularly for the gas engines used in automobiles, airplanes, motor boats, motor trucks, etc.
In view of the differences in the sizes of socket-Wrenches, the differences in the sizes of the spark-plugs, and the differences in diameter of the polygonal-shaped sides oi" the metallic casing of the plug, it is oftentimes difficult to match the wrench with the plug and because oi" the differences to manipulate them.
The object of my invention is to so construct the exterior of the upper exposed portion of the metal casing of the plug, thatl a socket-wrench of any of the conventional sizes can fit onto the same and enable the plug to be screwed into or ont of the sparkplug openingr in the cylinder of the engine, regardless oi the size of the bore of said socket-wrench. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.

construction and the assembling of said parts f .is the same.
The widest portion of the spark'plug is about its center of lengt-h, and below this widest part the casing is reduced in diameter to provide a shoulder S, and an exteriorly screw-threaded barrel 9. Above this widest portion. the casing is provided with a series of circumferential flanges 10, the diameters of which are gradually increased from the uppermost. to the lowermost, that is, each flange is less in diameter than the one below it, and the outer edges of these flanges are made hexagonal similar to that of a nut, so thatl a socket-wrench the hexagonal socket of which is greater in diameter than the uppermost flange 9, will fit on one of the flanges below the saine. It is the intention to make the diameter of the uppez-most flange such that the smallest socketwrench will fit thereon, and to make the diameter of the intervening flanges such that they7 can be operatively engaged by other socket-wrenches the diameter of whose sockets come between that of the largest and smallest iianges.
In Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings, I show another forni of my invention. The construction of this changed form is sub stantially the same as that hereinbefore described excepting that the upper portion 20, of the casing above its widest center of length is made hexagonal and above a certain point 21 is shaped like a truncated sixsided pyramid. substantially as shown in the drawings.
