Be it known that I, BARNEY PREBLUDA, a citizen of the United States, and resident oi Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful mprovement in Metallic Heels for Shoes, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic heels for shoes, and has for its ob ject to provide a heel comprising a hollow metallic heel member and a separate heel plate which may be independently secured to the shoe bottom and securely coupled with said hollow metallic heel member for securing the latter to the shoe and for serving as an auxiliary heel withinthe heel member to relieve the latter of part of the load which would otherwise be carried thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide a heel designed substantially along the lines disclosed in my copending application filed as of even date hereof, and treats with a modification of the type of heel disclosed in said copending application, as will appear more apparent by a reference thereto, the within described type of heel providing for a design which is more adapted for heavier duty than the other type of heel.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be gathered from the description following herein and considered in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein the invention is shown embodied.
The terms employed herein are used in, the generic and descriptive sense to designate the elements illustrated, and are therefore not primarily intci'idcd as terms ol limitation.

The numeral 20 represents a hollow. shaped, met llic heel member which is pret erably made of aluminum so as to reduce the weight thereof to a minimum. The heel 20 is preferably cast with the integral, transverse partition wall 21, which divides the hollow of the heel 20 and provides the upper and lower heel chambers 22 and 2-3, respectively, on either side of said wall 21. Said heel member may be shaped to conform to any of the different styles of heels, as the French heel shown in Fig. 1, with the outer and exposed surfaces enameled in. anv desired color and finished oil? to suit the reguirements oi the shoe with which the same is to be associated. The top EZ- l of the heel is preferably thickened around the same to yield a substantial horeshoe-shapcd flange for the shoe to bottom on. and to provide the side heel plate l'lt or shouldered sections 25 and the front and rear end. heel plate recesses or shouldered sections 20 and 27, as shown in which yield a eteil ilate shown in the preceding the heel opening for the heel. Said recesses are dcpressed suiiicicntly low to acconmiodate the thickness of the heel plate to be hereinafter described, and form between them in the top of the heel member 20 the end and side abutting and plate locking lugs 28 and 29. The lower heel chamber 23 is preferably packed flush with a leather pac ring 80, as shown in Figs. and 5, which is held securely set therein by the anchoring bolt 31 which reaches into the upper chamber 22 of? the heel member through an opening provided therefor in the partitioii wall 21. To said packing 30 may be atlixed the tread lit 33 (whether leather or rubber) by suitable nails or screws 34 1, as shown in said Fig. l.
35 represents the three-flange type of coup- Civ lin or heel plate which is employed with the heel member shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive. Said heel plate is of the saddle type and is provided with the side flanges $36 and the rear flange 87 which fit, respectively, within the side recesses and 27 of the heel member 20 between the abutting lugs 28 and 29, as shown in Fig. i, and in contour assume a horseshoe shape. Said plate is made of sheet metal stock, as sheet steel, for example, and is preferably punched out and shaped in the one operation, the flanges 36 and 37 thereof lying in the same plane and being provided with nail or clincher perforations or holes 38 by means of which said plate may be securel set and coupled with the shoe Sas shown in 1 and 3. Said flanges areshaped to lit within the respective shouldered recesses provided therefor in thetop flange of the heel member. Depending downwardly from the plane of said flanges are the side and end webs or petals 39 and 40, respectively, which support the coupling base 4E1 of the plate 35, which base carries the threaded coupling nut or nipple A12 permanently secured thereto by being brazed or soldered in position therewith.
Said coupling base 41 is preferably centrally disposed within said plate and may be designed to project beyond the plane of the flanges of the plate to reach down within the heel chamber 12 as deep as may be required and as close to the wall 21 as may be desired, with the threaded nipple aligned therein to receive the coupling bolt 3L as shown in Fig. 1.
35 represents the modified or four-flange type of heel plate shown in Figs. 9 and 10, which is similarly designed to the threeflange type of heel plate heretofore described and shown in the other views of the drawing,'but is additionally provided with a Ll'oiuth or front flange 37 which [its the front recess 26 prodded therefor in the top of the heel member 20.

Thus it is true in this case as in the heel disclosed in the above referred to co-pending application, that the peculiar relationship and association between the heel plate and the heel member permits the former to function therein as an auxiliary heel, serving to take part of the load thereon and directingit to the heel lift through the medium of the coupling bolt 31. herefore, the
work of the hollow heel 20, which is cast thin and light, is greatly reduced and added life is afforded same.
It will thus be noted that the heel plate may be made up rigid and yet be light in weight, and serves as a brace in the outer heel to reinforce the same and to assist in carrying the load subjected thereto. The heel plate, as herein disclosed, permits of its being conveniently affixed to the shoe, and provides a ready and easy means for coupling the outer heel member to the shoe.
While the preferred embodiments of my invention have been described in detail, I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction thereof, since various changes in the for n, material, proportions and in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, heretofore described and claimed in the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention in detail, what I claim as new is:
1. A heel comprising an outer hollo' and shaped heel member having side and end plate seating recesses formed in the top wall thereof; an inner saddle shaped plate member adapted to set and project within the hollow of said outer member and provided with independent side and end flanges adapted to respectively fit within the side and end seating recesses of said outer member for supportedly engaging said plate member therein; and means for clamping said plate and said outer members in secured relationship.
2. A metallic heel comprising a hollow. heel-shaped outer member having a closed bottom and a top flange provided with a series of inner shouldered sections interposed between abutting lugs formed in the same into side and end top flange for separating said shouldered sections; an inner heel member having a couplingbase centrally disposed therein and provided with iiidepeiuleiitly radiating side and'end webs terminating respectively in mitwardly disposed'perforated flanges at the side and ends of the inner heel member, said flanges adapted to seat and lit within the aforesaid side and end shouldered sections of said outer heel member for supporting the coupling base within the hollow of said outer member; and a coupling member engaging with said coupling base of said inner heel member and said closed bottom of said outer member for clamping the two members securely together to form a unit heel therebetween.
