JOHN O.-NYMAN, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CENTRAL METAL YRODUCTS COMPANY, OF CANTON, OHIO, A CORYORATION OF OHIO.
METAL DOOR.
Application led August l, 1921. Serial No. 488,761.
To all ywhom t may con/cera:
Be it known that l, JOHN O. NYMAN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Metal Door, of which the following is a specific; tion.
This invent-ion relates to metal doors and more particularly to a hollow, metal door of the flush type. in which reinforcing means vis provided upon the interior of the door.
The objects of the invention are to provide a hollow, metal door formed of spaced sheets of metal having theiredge portions connected together and having channel shaped, reinforcing members slidably inserted at spaced intervals between the sheets.
The above and ancillary objects may be attained by providing two similar sheets with inturned flanges at their vertical edges, a connecting strip being spot welded or otherwise attached to said flanges. vertical strips being attached at spaced intervals upon the inner sides of the sheets and provided with vertical grooves, channel shaped reinforcing ribs being provided with inturned flanges arranged to be inserted into said grooves, horizontally disposed channel members being spot welded or otherwise con nected within the upper and lower ends of the sheets and engaging said reinforcing ribs.
The invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the` accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a door embodying the invention, parts being broken away for the purpose of illustration;
Fig. 2', a section on the line H-L Fig. l;
Fig. 3, a similar section of a portion of the door upon an enlarged scale;v
Fig. 4, a section on the line lV-IV, Fig. 3;
' Fig. 5, a section on the line V-V, Fig. 3i',
Fig. 6. a perspective view of a portion of one of the strips which is att'ached to the inner face of each sheet of the door; and
Fig. 7, a perspective view of a portion of one of the reinforcing ribs.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
The door is formed of two spaced sheets of met-al indicated by the numerals l and 2, each of which is of rectangular shape of substantially the sizeof the finished door. An intnrned flange Il is formed upon each vertical edge of each of' the sheets l and :2. the inner edges of the flanges upon opposite sheets engaging, as best shown in Fig. il, the sheets being connected together by means of the strips 4 which are of' substantially the width of the two adjacent flanges 3 and are attached to the flanges 3 preferably by Spot welding.
lt will be evident that some reinforcement is necessary between the sheets l and 2 in order to strengthen the door and prevent the sheets from being bent or crushed together, and it will also be seen that any reinforcing device located between the sheets would be an obstruction' to the spot welding machine or tools by means of which the strips l are attached to the flanges 3.
ln order to provide a suitable reinforcement for the interior of' the door, which at the same time will not interfere withthe operation of the spot 4welding machine or tools. the vertically disposed strips 5 are com nected in oppositely disposed pairs at spaced intervals upon the inner spaces of the sheets l and :2. as by spot welding, before the sheets are connected together.
Each of the strips 5 is provided with the vertical` channel portion 6, the inner cdge lof which is spaced from the adjacent sheet as shown at 7. The reinforcing ribs Si are of channel shape and are provided with thc. inturned flanges 9 at their edges.
Aftcr`the strips l have been spot welded to the flanges 3 of the sheets l and Q, these reinforcing ribs which are of slightly less length than the sheets l and 2 and which correspond in length with the strips 5, are. then inserted as best shown in Fig. 3, the flanges 9 thereof beinfgT inserted into the grooves formed in the vertical ribs (l of said strips, the reinforcing ribs being slidably placed in posit-ion.
After the reinforcingribs have all been placed in position, channel members l0 are inserted between the sheets l and 2 at the upper and lower ends of the door in the manner best shown in Fig. 5, these channels being connected to the sheets l and Q as by n r i 'i spot welding. lhe ribs b are thus held against longitudinal movement within the door, preventing any movement thereof which might cause any disagreeable sound.
lt will be evident from the above that a sheet nietal door ot` the flush type is thus provided which is lighty in weight and :1t the salue tinie is sutlicienlly durable to with- `stand hard use. lt will also be seen that the door niay be easily assembled` as the. flanges l may he spot welded to the connect ing strips l lie'lore the reinforcing ribs S are inserted` the entire interior ot the door thus being open to perniit the necessary tools to be inserted tor the spot welding.
e l claiu1:-
