Description

Dec. 19,1922,
J? Sherman,
gnuemop Patented Dec. is, ieaa hiTihli d FRANK SI-IERMAN, OF ltIcLOUTI-I, KAN$AS.
GUARD RAIL.
Application filed April 24:, 1922. Serial No. 556,149.
vpoints tov prevent the same from becoming broken or chipped by their contact with dragging brake beams or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a guard of this character which will direct the brake beam or article hanging from a train passing over the switch point, to a point above the switch point.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, with out departing from the spirit of the invent-ion.
Referring to the drawing Figure l is a perspective view disclosing a rail, a switch point, and a guard rail as supported adjacent thereto.
' Figure 2 is a sectional view through the guard rail.
lteferring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a rail of arailway track, the same being supported on the usual tie 6.
The movable switch point is indicated at 7 and is shown as disposed adjacent to the guard rail 8 forming the essence of this invention, This guard rail is relatively long and includes a base 9 and a web portion 10, the base 9 being secured to the ties- 6, as by means of the spikes 11.
The guard rail is formed with an inclined upper surface 12, the web portion of the guard rail tapering downwardly to a point adjacent to the base 9 as indicated at 13 to provide a guiding surface to guide a hanging beam or the like, secured to a car moving over the track to a point above the switch point 7 to prevent the hanging beam or bar from contacting with c the switch point '7 to render the switch inoperative. i
One end of the guard-rail is of a height greater than the height of the switch point associated therewith, so that when the hanging beam or member contacting with the guard rail moves thereover, the same will drop down from the guard rail to a point directly over the switch point, thereby eliminating any possibility of the beam 5 contacting with the movable end of the switch point.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as newisz- A guard rail comprising a base, an integral web portion formin a part of the guard rail, said web portion having its upper edge inclined throughout a portion of its length, the inclined edge extending to one end of the base to present a (ramming-g siu'ttacatlu-i opposite end of said guard rail being relatively straight and having the upper portion thereof curved and merging into a rela tively straight portion of the upper edge.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto attixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK SHERMAN.
