To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN Q. SHERMAN and ALBERT W. ME'rzNER, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Dayton. in the county of -Montgomery and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Ourinvention relates to autographic .Ifegisters. more particularly of the type which retain one of the strips within the machines as a record of the transaction taking place on the issued copies on the remainder of the strips in the machine. In machines of this character there has been a constant difiiculty in the art concerning the winding up of the record strip in the machine casing after it had passed the tablet plate. This has been particularly true in machines which fed the record strip along with the balance. of the strips over the writing tablet or plate with the same set of mechanisms, as in the Schirmer type of feed shown in the patent to T. F. Schirmer dated November 16, 1909, No. 940481. In the Schirmer type, wherein accurate feed of the various strips is accomplished by sprockets engaging in marginal'holes in the paper, the necessity for freedom of movement of the various strips so as to be adjusted by the pins renders even more requisite the care in winding up or otherwise storing the record strip.
It is the object of this invention to provide a device which will wind up a record strip over an operated roll within the easing of an autographic register, which device is inhibited from action duringa portion of the feed ofthe strips, thereby relieving the record strip from strain during a portion of the feed at least. It is a further object to provide a construction in which any desired amount of inhibition can be exercised.
The result of a considerable degree of inhibition of the feeding device is that the machine is adaptable of being used in instances where the record strip is not fed along with the remaining strips in the ma: chine, but where it merely passes over the tablet plate and is caused to move by the storage roll itself. In such cases the record.

will be a valuable function of our mechanism.
The objects and advantages stated and other improvements which will be. noted we accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.

In the machine shown, there is a casing 1 in which is the usual tablet plate over which all strips pass, and the sprocket feed device 2 comprising in this particular instance a pair of rotatable pin bearing bodies. The 7 strips of paper shown are three in number in this instance, the issued strips A and B and the record strip C. The record strip may or may not have perforations located marginally thereof, dependent upon the use to which the machine is to be put, and in case there are no perforations the record strip will be reduced in width so that it can pass between the pin bearing bodies of the sprocket feed.
Secured on the shaft 3 of the pin bearing bodies is a pinion 4 which is caused to rotate by the rotation of the said feeding devices. This pinion meshes with an intermediate pinion 5, both of the pinions 4 and 5 being mounted on the inner wall of the machine casing.
Pivoted axially of the pinion 5 is a lever 6 which at its upper end is secured to a spring 7. A stop 8, located in the casing wall prevents over-displacement of the lever by the spring. The lever carries at its lower end a pinion 9 which has secured to the lever 6 is pivoted axially of the pinion 5, the small pinion 9 carried by said lever will always be in mesh with the pinion 5, although it is free to move circumferentially thereof. Mounted on a hollow stub shaft 11 in the casing is a driving wheel 12, which has a concave ll-shaped groove in its periphery to match the wheel 10. The spring pressure on the lever serves to hold the wheels 10 and 12 together, the wheel l2-hasa slot 13 formed at the base of the groove therein, to allow for wear between the two wheels.
The spindle i l of the record storage roll 17 passes through the hollow stub shaft 11, and the wheel has any sort of pin 15, the roll 17 having a slot 16 to engage the pin or slot in each end of the roll. The wheel 1.2 thus drives the roll although the spindle and roll may be removed for getting at the record without disturbing the wheel itself. This in itself is a valuable improvement in autographic registers, as it is, necessary in all types with Which we are familiar to remove the driving pinion for the record. storage roll along with the roll itself.
Mounted on the face of the wheel 12 is a. ratchet 18, over which plays the end of a pawl lever 19. This lever is spring pressed by the spring 20, and has a cam end 21. This cam end lies adjacent to the face of the pinion 4, which it will be remembered is operated by the sprocket feed.
The pinion 4 has along its face the desired number of interspaced studs 22 disosed concentric-ally of the said pinion. These studs contact with the cam end of the pawl lever, and press the other end of the lever into mesh with the ratchet 18, thereby stopping the operationof the wheel 12, and forcing the wheel 10 which drives it to frictionally slip.
Any part of the feed of the storage roll can be inhibited, by arranging the studs 22,
and thus the stated objects of mymachine are accomplished.
In case a summary strip is employed, then this can be fed in the desired amounts as compared to each complete feed of the main strips. In case the sprocket feed is used, or
some other feeding means, which will uni-' formly feed all of the strips over the tablet plate of the machine, then the record strip can be permitted to run loose and accumulate between the discharge end of the feeding device, and the roll itself, thereby giving an opportunity for free adjustment during at least a portion of the feed of the machine.
In such case the gearing should be such as to speedily take up this slack.
As pointed out it is not necessary that this invention be applied to sprocket feed machines alone although it possesses certain particular advantages in such uses. It is intended to be applied in autographic registers, wherever its use may be found of advantage, this use being the partial and adjust-able inhibition of the feed of a record storing means.

The details of construction of the mechameans for storing a record strip after passage over such writing surface, driving means for the storing means operatively connected to the feeding means and, adapted to operate during the feeding movement and means for restraining the operation of said storing means during any desired portion of the operation of the feeding means.

. means for storing a record strip after. passage over such writing surface, driving means for the storing means operatively connected to the feeding means, said means comprising a pair of driving wheels having mu tually engaging convexand concave surfaces.

4. In an autographic register, the combination with means for feeding a plurality of strips of aper over a writing surface, of a storage r01 for arecord strip and means for operating the same from the feedingmeans, and; means for inhibiting the operation of the said storage roll comprising a latch, having a contact portion thereon, and a contact element on the feeding device to contact with said contact portion on the latch and control the position of the latch,
for the purpose described.
5. In a summary strip autographic regis ter, the combination with means for feeding of a plurality of strips of paper, of means for feeding a summar record strip operatively connected to sai first mentioned feeding means, and frictionally engaging the record stripfeeding means at all times and means for controlling said operative connection to permit it to energize the sumilt the paper feeding movement of the fee mary feed during a limited portion onl of ding device.

In an autographic register, the combi nation with a feeding device for a plurality of strips of paper, of means forfeeding a record strip comprising a roll and frictionai driving wheels, an idler pinion driven by the feeding device, one of said wheels having a pinion thereon, and means for mounting said wheel and pinion comprising a member axially mounted of the idler pinion, and rotatably carrying the said wheel and pinion in a position for the pinion to mesh with said idler pinion and the other of said friction wheels being connected positively with the roll.
7. In an autographic register, the combination with a feeding device for a plurality of strips of paper, of means for feeding a record strip comprising a roll and frictional driving wheel, an idler pinion driven by the feeding device, one of said wheels having a pinion thereon, and means for mounting said wheel and pinion, comprising a lever, a spring controlling'said lever, means for mounting the lever centrally of the idler pinion, and means on the lever for rotatably supporting the wheel and pinion in a position for the said pinion. to mesh with the idler pinion and the other of said friction wheels being connected positively with the roll, for the purpose described.
8. In an autographic register, the combination with a casing for mounting a plurality of strips of paper, a single means for feedingall of said paper strips over a Writing tablet, a-n operated roll for storing one of said strips within the casing, said roll operatively and frictionally connected to said feeding means and means for inhibiting the operation of said operated roll and causin a frictional slippage during a portion 0 the movement of said feeding means.
9. In an autographic register, the combination with sprocket means for feeding a pluralit of strips of paper over a writing tablet, including a record strip through a uniform distance whereby the record strip passes over said tablet together with the duplicate strips to receive like notations to the duplicate strips, and means for storing j said record strip on a roll within the machine comprising a roll, an operating device for operatively connecting said roll with the sprocket feeding device, and means for inhibiting the effect of said. connection during a portion of the movement of said sprocket feeding device.
10. In an autographic register, the combination with a feeding device,,of a storage roll for a record strip, and means for connecting said storage roll and the feeding device, comprising in part a frictional driving member, together with a stop for the strips of paper including a strip to he retained in said machine, for feeding said strips in registry with each other as descrihed,.operated means for storing the re tained strip after vpassing said sprocket feeding device, and means for relieving the retained strip from strain during a portion of the feed of the feeding device.
12. In an autographic register, the combination with a feeding device for strips of paper of a storage roll for rewinding a rec ord strip after it has been fed by the feeding device and a frictional, intermittent drive between said feeding device and the storage roll.
13. An'autographic register having feeding devices for feeding simultaneously through an equal lengthedpath a plurality of strips of paper, operated means for stormarginal perforations in a plurality v ing one of said strips as a retained strip after same has been operated on by the said feeding device and means for relieving the retained strip from strain of the storing means during a portion of the feed of the feeding device.

In a manifolding device, the combination with means for feeding a plurality of strips of paper including a record strip, of a storage means for the record strip adapt ed to accumulate it after it has been fed by the feeding means, driving connection between the feeding means and the storage means to drive them simultaneously, and
means for restraining the driving connection from energizing the storage means during a portion of the feeding movement of the feeding device.
15. In a manifolding machine, the combination with a rotary feed device for-feeding equal lengthed strips of paper including a record strip, of a storage means for accumulating the record strip after it has been fed, and means for driving the storage means from the rotary feed device during a portion only of the feeding movement.
16. In a manifolding machine, the combination with means for feeding a plurality of strips of paper over a writing surface, of means for storing a record strip after passage over the writing surface, driving means for the storage means simultaneously operated with the feeding means, and means for restraining the energizing of the storage means during a portion of themotion of the feeding means.
17. In combination in a manifolding machine, a pairof toothed rotary bodies for engaging marginal perforations in a plurality of strips of paper including a record strip, a'storage roll for .the record strip,
and means for moving it simultaneously with the rotary bodies, and retarding it during a portion of the simultaneous motion to leave a looseness of the strip and facilitate self adjustment, thereof on the said toothed bodies.
18. In an autographic register, the combination with a feeding device for a plurality of strips of paper, of means for feeding a record strip comprising a roll and frictional driving wheels, an idier pinion driven by the feeding devices, one of said wheels having a pinion thereon, and means for mounting said wheel and pinion comprising a member axially mounted of the idler pinion, and rotatably carrying the ,said wheel and pinion in a position for the pinion co mesh with said idler pinion. and the other of said friction wheels being connected positively with the roll, said positive connection comprising contact members between the roll and the said friction wheel and a removable mounting means for holding the roll in contact position.
19. In an autographic register, the combination with a feeding device for a plurality of strips of paper, of means for feeding a record strip comprising a roll and frictional driving wheel, an idler pinion driven by the feeding device, one of said wheels having a pinion thereon, and means for. mounting said wheel and pinion, comprising a lever, a spring controlling said lever, means for mounting the lever centrally of the idler pinion, and means on the lever for rotatably supporting the wheel and pinion in a position for the said pinion to mesh with the idler pinion, and the other of said friction wheels being connected positively with the roll, said positive connection comprising contact members between the roll and the said friction wheel and a removable mounting means for holding the roll in contact position.
20. In a manifolding register for manifolding forms, means for rewinding the lowermost form, means for withdrawing from the register the balance of the forms. and means controlled by the withdrawing means for inhibiting the movement of the rewind roll during part of the withdrawal movement.
21. In a manifolding register for manifolding forms, means for rewinding one strip for a record strip, means for withdrawing the balance of theforms from the register, said means being adapted to retain all forms in proper'relative alignment with each other, and means actuated by the aligning and withdrawing means for inhibiting the movement of the rewind roll during part of the issuing operation.
22. In combination with a manifolding register for manifolding printed forms, means for rewinding one of the forms for a record strip, means for withdrawing the balance of the forms from the register and for maintaining all of them in proper alignment with each other, and means for inhibiting the movement of the rewind roll during part of the issuing operation, said means controlled by the issuing and aligning mechanisms. In a manifolding register, means for withdrawing forms across a writing table and from the register in perfect alignment with each other, means for rewinding one copy for a record'strip after it has passed the writing tablet, and means operated by the withdrawing nieans for inhibiting the movement of the rewind roll during part of the withdrawing operation.
