FLASH LIGHT. APPLICATION FILED MAR. Is. |920.

Patented Dec. 12, 1922.
UNITED STATES RICHARD MAX EATON. OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK.
FLASH LIGHT.
Application filed March 18J 1920. Serial No. 366,892.
To all whom t may conce/fn Be it known that I, RICHARD MAX Error, a citizen o'r the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State `ot New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flash Lights, oit which the `following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a switch, specially adapted for use in connection with portable electric search lights` by the operation of which the lamp may be caused to glow temporarily producing a single flash, extended in duration by holding thebutton depressed, or by shifting the position of the button, to cause a continuous emission of light.
A further object is to provide an effective guard for the single button used. protecting it against inadvertent displaceu'ient, means also being provided for maintaining the button in either of its adjusted positions.
These and other objects, such as simplicity ot structure, assemblage and operation are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying` drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which:-
Figure 1, is a top side elevational view of a search light made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3, is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken through the switch, con-- tact and support.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
ynumeral. 10 designates the cylindrical hollow body of a conventional type `of search light or electric torch, the Same being made ot nonconducting material and adapted to be grasped by the hand.
Engaged by the rivet 13 is a metallic strip conductor 30 secured at its inner end by a similar rivet 31.
Another strip conductor 35 is arranged in register with the strip 30. its free front end 35 extending into the head 11 so as to make contact with the exterior of the retlectorlS.
The strip 35 is firmly held in engagement to the interior of the body 10 by another tubular rivet 36, immediately rearward of which the strip is sheared to produce a tongue 38 bent to extend outward and upward through an opening 39 formed in the wall oitl the body 10, the extreme end of the tongue resting on the outer head of the rivet 36. y
The end 40 of the strip 35 is also turned outwardly and upwardly, extending through another opening 41 in the wall of the body, as can best be seen in Fig. 3.
A thin metallic casing or housing 44 is provided with Hanged feet extensions 45 and 45', held securely to the exterior ofthe body bv the rivets 31 and 31', and formed longitudinallyl in the casing 44 is a slot 46, adjacent to the rear end of which is a raised abutment or guard 47.
Elidably engaged in the slot 46 is a stem 48 having an extending operative but-ton or head 50, the inner end of the stem 48 being riveted or otherwise tirmly secured in a plate 51 having an upturned angular end 52 engageable within the recess formed in its abutment 47, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby locking the stem, button and plate.
The outer end of the plate 51, which is made of spring material of conducting nature. is turned reentrantly, forming a bend 53, from which extends a spring contact 54, disposed below the plate 51 and terminating in a curved strip 55, slidable on the exterior of the non-conducting body 10 and adapted to act as a detent when over the opening 39, holding the parts in a forward position.
In operation, when no light is required, the button 50 is moved to the rear until the end or detent 52 engages in the recess of the abutment 47 at which time the abutment, ex-
tending as it does flush or level with the top of the but-ton, acts asa protecting guard against inadvertent contact or pressure on the button.
If a lash or temporary light is desired, the button 50 is manually depressed, causing vthe outer end of the plate 51 to make contact with the element 40 of the conductor strip 35, thus conveying current from the battery through the ferrule, cap and strip 3() to the end 40 and thence through strip 35 reflector 18, socket and stem to the bulb 20, the inner contact of the stem being in electrical contact with the other pole o'lf the battery.
Thus during the depression of the button a light 'is obtained of a temporary nature; if however, a continuous light is required the button 50 is depressed and moved towards the head, causing the spring contact 54 to engage the tongue 38 and form a circuit in the manner before described, the device mak ingdirect and positive metallic eirouit our tacts throughout.
laving thus desoribed my invention and .set `forth its purpose7 manner ot construction and application, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. A switch comprising a siqiport, a easing; thereon, said casing haring an elongated slot, a hollow abutn'ient on said casing adjacent one end ot the slot, a conductor in circuit with said casing, a second eonductor engaged to said support below said casing, a tongue and a spaced. terminal formed with said second conductor extei'nlinp; through said support, a spring r able in said housing, a button ing said Contact, said button har Y -i v extending` through the mentioned slot5 detent termed with said Contact engageuble in said abutment and ,spring detent torn d with said contact engageable in the opening` through which said tongue extends when said contact is in circuit with said tongue7 said contact being engageable with said terminal upondepression ot said button when the contact is at the opposite end of the slot.
2. A switch comprising a support, slotted casingthereon7 a hollow abuti'nent on said easing adjacent one end ot the slot a pair of Conductors secured below said sup port, one ot said conductors beingin electrical engagement with said casing" and the other insulated therefrom, tongue and terminal formed with said insulated conductor extending into said casing;5 a movable contact in said casing` adapted to en?J either` the tongue or terminal means engageable with the hollow abutment ot' said casing` for normally maintaining said Contact in its inoperative position and a single opeating.;` means for Said Contact accessible trein toe exterior of said easing.
3. A switch comprising` a support, slot* ed casing thereoma hollow abutment on said casing adjacent one end of the slot, a pair of conductors secured below said sul port, one ot said conductors being in electrical engageH ment with said casing` and the other n lated therefrom, tongue and terminal formed with said insulated conductor tending` into said casingj a movable Contact in said easing adapted to engage either the tongueor terminal means engageable with the hollow abutment ot said easing; for normally maintaining said Contact in its inoperative position a single button 'tor operating said Contact into either ot its positions and tor causing;- Contact with said terminal when at one end ot' the slot in said casing.
It. fr Switch comprising; asupport, a slotted casingy thereon, a hollow abutment on said easing?)` adjacent one end ot the slot, a pair ol" conductors secured. below said support, one ot' said conduetorts being in electrical ngagement with said casing` and the otaer insulated therefrom, a tongue and terminal tormed with said insulated Conductor eztending` into said casing', a Contact gageable upon depression with said terminal when at one end oit said easing` and engageable with said tongue without depressionat the other endj and a single operating,` means tot said tongue.
il. switch comprising a support, a slotted easing thereon, a hollow abutment on said casing adjacent one end of the slot a pair oit conductors secured below said support? one ot said conductors being` in electricai engagement with said casing; and the other i1 eulatod therefrom, a tongue and terminal 'formed with said insulated conductor extending into said eaeilm;7 a contact en- `Q ;ageable upon depression with said terminal when at one end oi" said easingI and engrageable with said tongue without depression at the other end, a sir L e means 'for depressing i l shitting said Contact. and means tor holding' said Contact in its torward position.
G. A switch comprising a support, a slotted casing; thereon. a hollou` abutment on said easing adjacent one end of the slot, a pair oi? conductors secured below said support9 one of said conductors being;- in elec trical engagement with said easing; and the other insulated therefroln.) saiid insulated conductor hai/'ing two points ot contact7 a sliding,Y and compressible Contact element moval' le in said casing', a button Controlling said contact element7 a guard for said button and means 'for retaining said movable contact element in .its forward position.
