SCRAEER.
Application filed January 10, 1921. Serial No. 436,074. I
To all whom it m ay concern: partly broken away to show certain features Be it known that I, JoHN M. CoNLEY, a of construction.
citizen of the United States, residing at Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross section taken Stockton, county of San Joaquin, State of on a line 33 of Fig. 2. w
California, have invented certain new and Referring now more particularly to the useful Improvements in Scrapers; and I do characters of reference on the drawings, the declare the following to be a full, clear, and numeral 1 denotes the main frame beams, of exact description of the same, reference besuitable design, which are supported at their ing had to the accompanying drawings, and rear end by wheels 2, and converge at their .0 to the characters of reference marked thereforward ends, where they are provided with on, which form a part of this application. a drawfloar 3 for rigid connection to a trac- This invention relates to improvements in tor, so that the latter will support the frame scrapers, and particularly to a type adapted at that end. to be drawn by a tractor, the principal ob- Mounted between the beams 1 ahead of the" 15 ject of the invention being to construct a wheels is the scraping bowl 4 comprising a scraper in which the loading, spreading or back scraping plate 5 normally having a condumping operations may be easily controlled siderable forward slant from top to bottom, by the driver of the tractor. and side plates 6, suitably braced as at 7.
Another object is to provide means for This scraper bowl is connected tothe frame 10 allowing the scraper to dump automatically,. at two points on each side. First: by means 7 5 or to position and hold the same to scrape of normallyvertical links 8 pivoted at their or spread at varying levels. lower end to the side plates 6 at a point I have also hung the scraper bowl in such somewhat forward of the center of length of a manner that comparatively slight pressure the said plates, and similarly connected to 55 on the controls is needed to tilt the bowl brackets 9 projecting upwardly from the considerably, for dumping, spreading or frame beams 1, either of said pivotal conscraping purposes. nections being adjustable at will to alter' A further and important object is to so the effective length of the links and to alter hang or position the scraper bowl that at the the level of setting of the plates 6. Second:

This not only allows a light draft point intermediate the links and the rear machine in the operation of which the strain plate 5 of the scraper, and to the frames 1 35 of pulling the same at such times is reduced, acertain distance ahead of the scraper, as at but the dirt can be moved for a considerable 11. In this manner, the scraper is both supdistance without loss. To aid in effecting ported from the ground adjacent its forward the last named result, I have provided auend, and the strain of scraping taken ofl' the tomat'ically adjustable wings on the sides links and transmitted to the heavy frame.

A further object of the invention is to pro To hold the scraping member against unduce a simple and inexpensive device and desired movement, and to control such move- 3.5 yet one which will be exceedingly effective ment when desired, I provide vertical rack;
for the purposes for which it is designed. bars 12 flexibly connected to the scraperb These objects I accomplish by means of plates 6 and meshing with pinions 13 mountsuch structure and relative arrangement of ed on a common shaft 14 extending transparts as will fully appear by a perusal of the Versely of the scraper above the same and 0 following specification and claims. supported by an auxiliary framework 15.
In the drawings similar characters of Turnableon the shaft 14: is a worm wheel; reference indicate corresponding parts in the 16 arranged to be'rotated by a worm prefer-- several views. ably enclosed in a supporting casing 17,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the scraper. which in turn is rotated by means of a hori- 2 is a side elevation of the same zontal shaft 18 extending to the forward end of the frame 1, on which end is a hand wheel 19.
The worm wheel 16 is normally operatively connected with the shaft 14 to turn the same by means of a common form of clutch 20, which may be released at will by means of a lever 21 having a pull-cable 22 extending forwardly therefrom and. adapted to be pulled from the tractor ahead. A spring 23 connected to the lever pulls on the same to normally hold the clutch enga ed.
f course the scraper could be raised and lowered entirely by manipulating the hand wheel, but this would increase the time necessary to accomplish this to a considerable degree, and is not necessary when the clutch. and another feature about to be described, are used. This feature is a weight 24 adjustably fixed onto an arm or lever 25 connected to the plate 5 behind the same and fulcrumed to a bracket 26 on the frame 1 at. a point suitably positioned in the length of said arm. Vhen the clutch is released, the scraper will of itself climb out of the ground sufficiently to allow the dirt to spr id with a forward movement of the machine, but with the addition of the weight. this movement is accelerated and'the scraper may be raised to dump much higher than would be automatically possible without the same. Of course if desired when working under certain conditions, this weight may be omitted. v
By reason of the peculiar pivotal mounting of the scraper. the rear end is the only portion which raises to any extent, thus keeping the side plates adjacent the ground, while the forward slant of the back plate 5 enables the major part of a load of dirt to be supported by the said plate instead of by the ground, making it easier to transportthe load. I
To aid in preventing dirt from escaping at the sides when spreading or transporting the same, I have provided plates or wings 27 flexibly connected to the outside of the bowlplates 6 for vertical movement relative thereto-and arranged, to contact with the ground by reason of their own weight with any position ofthe bowl.
From the foregoing description it will be the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A scraper including a frame supported from the ground, a scraping bowl positioned therein having side plates. vertical links pivoted to the platesand to the frame there- 'above, and horizontal bars pivoted to the plates to the rear of the links connected therewith and to the frame ahead of said plates.
2. A scraper including a frame supported from the ground. a scraping bowl positioned therein, vertical links pivoted to the sides of the bowl and to the frame thereabove, horizontal bars pivoted to the bowl to the rear of the link connected therewith and to the frame ahead of said plates. and means connected to the rear end of the bowl and independent of said links and bars for tilting the same about its pivotal connections.
3. A scraper including a frame supported from the ground, a scraping bowl positioned therein and arranged for vertical movement, side plates on the bowl, and wings on the outside of the side plates flexibly connected thereto for relative vertical movement and adapted to contact with the ground irrespective of the positioning of the bowl relative thereto. i
4. A scraper comprising a frame, a scraper bowl, means flexibly connected to the back of the bowl for moving the same vertically, horizontal bars pivoted to the bowl and to the frame ahead of the bowl. and vertical bars pivoted to the frame and to the bowl and positioned intermediate the ends of the horizontal bars. the pivotal length of said vertical bars being adjustable.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN M. CONLEY.
