Be it known that LJAMLsSiiiITH, a citizen ofthe United States, andresiding in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, andState of Illinois, have invented or discovered new and useful improvements in Processesand Apparatus for Casting Bosh Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention, consists in a new and improved process and apparatus of casting vbosh plates for furnaces, and said process more particularly consists in 'casting said plates in a vertical position, the sand corek being supported, on an integral sand base, within the sand mold, whereby the use of anchors or other supports or reinforcement forthe core is avoided.

14 is the wooden sprue pattern whose end is stepped in a socket in the block 10. .The pattern 14C extends a little above the top of the cope C, and the top or' the pattern 11 is level with the top orp the cheek B. I first insert the` block 10 into the drag, and then mount thereon the patterns 11 and 14. llhe cheek B is then put down in place and bolted to the drag. A. steel` plate H is then placed over the top of the cheek, said plate being properly apertured to permit the upward extension ot the dowels 13 and the-sprue pattern 14C. Said plate is also provided with holes `which register with the holes in top ears 1 of the cheek. The cope is now put in place and bolted to the plat'e H and the cheek. The nose pattern 12 is now placed on the .plate H in registration with the pattern 11 with which it is connected by the dowels 13 extending up through the plate H.
,The molders sand is now introduced into the cope C, the curved riser patterns 15 being installed to form the riser passages in the sand mold. The cope is now rammed, or jarred by placing the flask on a machine. The top bolts 2 are-now removed and the plate l-l withthe cope and its contents lit-ted ott', the pattern 14, which remains with the cheek and drag, leaving a vertical hole in the nose 4mold forming the upper part ot the sprue. The nose mold thus formed is set aside to harden. The molders sand is now filled into the cheek about the Asprue and core pattern and the laslr is rammed or jarred. rlhe cheek is then detached from the drag and lifted ott' and set aside.
TvWhen the sand mold parts in the cope and cheek are hardened7 the wooden pat terns are removed.
My reason for forming the sand mold in two parts is that by this means l am able to more properly compact the sand, as the attempt to compact the sand mold in one piece and operation would result in irregular density and adhesion.
l, will next describe the formation of the sand core E and its supporting` base F. For this purpose l use a wooden core box ll and integral therewith a wooden basebox el.
The core box is of the following construction. lts top is open while its bottom 16 is curved to give the desired contour to the core. The inner end and sides of the core are deiined by the permanent Walls 17 and 18, respectively, thel outer ends of the walls 18 being connected by the detachable pattern plate 19 which denes the iront of the core and which 4isy mounted in place by means of dowels engaging the bottom 1G. Said plate 19 is provided 'with three transverse ports or openings 20 which correspond to the ports 6, 7 and 8 in the trent of the bosh plate. To enable the plate 19 to be lifted away from the linished sand core ings of wooden insert blocks 21 held in place v by dowels 22, which blocks can be removed before the plate 19 is' lifted out. l

The molders sand is filled into the boxes l Also wooden prints are also placed againstv the front ofthe plate 19 to form the gate passages 8, Fig. 8, which connect the mold i and J, the top of the box l being struck cavity with the lower endY of the pouring sprue formed by the pattern 111.
After the boxes l and J are lled, the sand is compacted by ramming or jarring and. the boxes are then turned upside down to discharge thev integral sand core and sand base upon a metal plate. The wooden pattern members are now lifted out and the core and base are baked.
