EXCAVATING BUCKET.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL DYKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Excavating Bucket, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an excavating bucket designed for use in connection with an excavating machine.

One object of the invention is to provide an excavating bucket of a 'novel contour suchthat the load carried by the bucket will be readily discharged at the proper time and will not wedge or stick in the bucket.

Another object of the invention is to provide a bucket which is so designed that it will retain its load without loosening any part thereof, until .the load is dumped.

A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a bucket which is reversible, that is, whose opposing edges are formed into scraping blades and when one of them becomes dull the bucket may be reversed and the other one used.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, opera tion and arrangement of parts, an example of which is givenin this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of the bucket.

Figure 2 is an end View, and Figure 3 is a top view.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 refers to 'thebody of the bucket. The top or open end of the bucket is of a general elliptical form and the sides thereof taper toward the bottom and approach a rectangular form, in cross section, at the point 2 which is rounded off or oval. The top or open end of the bucket has the reinforcing bands 3 pivoted thereto, and on opposite sides these bands are bevelled to form the scrapingblades 4, 4L. The bottom of the bucket at the ends is'reinforced by suitable reinforcing straps 5, 5, as shown. The reinforcing bands 3 have ears 6, 6 fastened thereto at the opposite ends of the bucket, forming suitable connections for the cables or chains used in connecting the bucket to the walking beam of the excavating machine and the respective ends of the bucket are reinforced by the

7, 7, which are riveted thereto and the ends of the bucket are further braced by the transverse braces 8 which are riveted to said ends and connect the ends of the respective bottom braces 5.

Suitable lugs

9, 9 are fastened to the ends of the bucket near the bottom and are provided with bearing pins 10, 10 for the attachment of the emptying mechanism. also made for the attachment of the operating cables or chains to the bucket by securing the angle plates 11, 11 to the top side of the bucket. These angle plates are removable and may be transferred to the other side when it is desired to reversethe bucket. When one of the edges 4 becomes dull the bucket is reversed, thus resulting in the saving of time.

On account of the peculiar shape of bucket herein described its load will be carried without loss until it is ready to dump and when the dumping operation is attempted the load is readily discharged on account of the flaring shape to the bucket.

What I claim is 1. An excavating bucket whose open end is of a general elliptical form and whose sides taper toward the bottom and approach a rectangular form in cross section, and whose bottom isof oval contour, reinforcing bands riveted to the open end of the bucket on the outside, the outer or free margins of said bands being beveled to form scraping blades.
