lMy primary object is to provide a novel, simple and inexpensive construction oi' bottle capping device which -will be highlyy effective in operation and durable, and which may be folded into relatively compact con.- dition inore particularly for transportation or storage.

Locking means for releasably securing 'the upright 10 in the vertical position shown are provided, these locking means comprising a bar 16 shown as, and by prefn erence, of rectangular shape in cross-section, which extends at lits opposite ends through vertical elongated slots 17 in the bar 11 and is movable up and down therein, the eX- tremities of the bar 16 being adapted to en-r ter grooves 18, in the upper edges of the plate-portions 7, the groove 18 for one only of lthese plate-portions being shown. The bar 16 is held against lengthwise movement by cotter pins 19 extending crosswise through openings therein adjacent the inner sides of the bars 11, one only of these pins being shown. In the operating position'oft parts shown in Fig. 1, the bar 16 is in position for locking the upright 10 in vertical position, the ends of the bar 16 being located within the slots 18. When it is desired toy swing the rack member 10 to the position in which is parallels the body portion et the base 5, the operator lifts the bar 16 to withdraw its ends from the slots 18 and thereupon swings the upright 10 on the pivots 15 to the position last referred to. Surrounding the rack-portion 12 of the upright 10 and movable up and down thereon, is a head 21 in the form oi' a slide preferably formed from a singlesheet of metal and bent to provide an opening 22 therethrough at which the head slides upon the upright 10, the metal of this head being deflected inwardly at opposite sides at the upper end ol the head, as represented at 23, at which the parts are secured as by the rivet 24, the metal at they lower edge of the head 21 being slit at one side and deflected inwardly as represented at 25, at which portion it is riveted, as indicated at 2G, to the opposite side of the head 21, whereby the head 21 is positively guided at its upper and lower edges on the raclr 12 to permit of the movement of the head vertically on the rack without wabbling. The side portions ot' the head, represented at 27, are spaced apart between the portions 23 and 25, yand located therebetween is a lever 28 pivoted to these side plates as indicated at 29. The inner end or this lever is formed with a segn'iental gear portion 30 which meshes with the raclr 12 and operates, when the lever 28 is rotated in one direction on its pivot 29, to fonce the head 21 downwardly, and when rotated in the opposite direction to lift the head. The lever 2S is preferably formed of two similar plates 31 fitting flatwise together, each having the gear teeth 30 referred to, these plates being connected together at their outer ends by rivets 32 which also serve to secure a handle portion 33 to these plates. The handle portion 33 is preferably made from a single sheet ot metal bent into the form shown to provide the opposite side portions 34, one only ot which is shown, with a curved upper plate portion 35, the outer extremity of the handle portion 34 being also curved downwardly, as represented at 36, the portion 33 preferably tapering in width from its end 36 toward its opposite end, its wider end being preferably about twice the width of its opposite end, at the top of portion 33. The side portions 3a extend rearwardly beyond the curved upper portion 35 of the handle, as shown,`and the rivets 32 extend through these extensions of the side portions, whereby the plates 28 and the handle The forming, or die, member provided for forcing the cap into sealing position at the mouth of a bottle whichk would be positioned on the horizontal portion ot the base plate 5, is represented at 37 and vis shown oit a shape commonly employed. It is in the 'form of an inverted cup member riveted at its upper surface, as indicated at 38, to outwardly-eitending lugs 39 on, and `integral with, the lower edges of the plates 27, with a heavy metal disk 332L interposed between the lugs 39 and the 'cup 37, the cup being shown as containing a block 10 of elastic material, as for example rubber, acting as a cushion.
It will be understood that in the operation of bottle-capping devices the rackequipped upright is subjected to relatively great stress tending to swing it to the left in Fig. 1. In my improved construction this force is counteracted by the interlocking of the plates 11 with the plate portions 3 which in turnabut at their lower edges against the plate portion 9. I am thus enabled to employ relatively light metal for the base member of the device while maintaining the desired rigidity of the parts. rilhere is also a tendency of the base-plate 5 to buckle, but this tendency is resisted in a manner to prevent the plate from buckling, by the provision of the plate-portion 9.
rl`he construction of the handle-portion 34 is also of advantage in a construction of this character, as it may be made very economically and still present the desired rigidity, and its rounded upper surface avoids hurting the hand of the operator.
rlhe forming of the lever 28 as shown and described is desirable as it permits the structure to be made very economically and also causes the lever 28l to present an offset p0rtion at eachside as at 33l1 which in the downward sim/'inging of the lever 28 engages the inclined surfaces 33b of the head 21, thereby affording a positive stop for the lever and preventing the latter from resting on, or passing against, the dome of cup 37 which avoids twisting or dislocatingv the latter. However, ii" desired, the lever may be made as integral structure and in such case m improvement in the handle portion of the structure may be incorporated.
The feature of providing the lugs 39 integral with the head 21 is of' advantage as the angle-construction thus provided serves to greatly strengthen the structure of the head, and when combined with the attachment of the cup 37 thereto provides rigid and secure fastening for the sides of the head. Furthermore, in the capping of a bottle pressure is exerted on the cup 37 by the bottlemouth and cap which has a tendency to twist or distort the head 21 and which if it occurs prevents the cap from being properly applied to the bottle. provision of the lugs 39 to extend parallel with the bottom of the cap 37 and at a right angle to the direction of thrust on the cup in the capping operation, minimizes twisting or distorting of the cup. Possibility of such distorting or twisting occurring is still further provided against by the provision of the disk 38a.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same The may be variously modiied and altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a bottle-capping device, the combination of a base portion formed at its rear edge with an upstanding rib, and at opposite sides with upwardly-extending plate-portions of angular shape in cross-section and providing inwardly-extending flanges at their rear edges, said ianges being located directly above said rib portion, and an upright carrying bottle-cap-engaging mechanism having portions pivoted on said basemember and extending into the corners provided by said angle-shape upright portions.
2. In a bottle-capping device, the combination of a base portion formed atvits rear edge with an upstanding rib, and at opposite sides with upwardly-extending lplate-portions of angular shape in cross-section and providing inwardly-extending ilanges at their rear edges, said anges being located directly above said rib portion, and an upright carrying bottle-cap-engaging mechanism pivotally connected with said members of angle shape in cross-section and extending into the corners provided thereby.

In a bottle-capping device, the combination of a base portion, an upright carrying bottle-cap-engaging mechanism pivotally connected with said base portion, and means, operating automatically, upon swinging said upright to upright position, to automatically lock said upright to said base portion in said position. n

5. In a bottle-capping device, the combination of a base portion, an upright carrying bottle-cap-engaging mechanism pivotally connected With said base portion, and means, operating automatically, upon swinging said upright to upright position, to automatically lock said upright to said base portion in said position, comprising a bar located in slots extending lengthwise of said upright and movable therein, and adapted to enter notches in said base-portion When said upright is in upright position.
6. In a bottle-capping device, the combination of a base portion formed of a baseplate provided at its opposite edges With upright platey portions of angle shape in crosssection, portions thereof extending in a direction toward each other and directly above and closely adjacent to underlying portions of said base-plate, and an upright carrying bottle-cap-engaging mechanism pivotally connected with said base portion and extending into the corners of said plate-portions.

9. In a bottle-capping device, the combination of a base portion formed at its rear edge with an upstanding rib and at opposite sides With upwardly-extending plate-por-- tions of angular shape in cross-section and providing inwardly-extending flanges Aat their rear edges, said flanges being located directly above said rib portion, and an upright carrying bottle-cap-engaging mechanism connected With said members of angle shape in cross-section and extending into the corners provided thereby.
