a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Jefferson andState of lowa, haveinvented a new and useful` improvement in Hinges for Gates and @ther ication. y
My invention relates principally to hinges for the closures of animal pens and the like, which may be readily adjusted to lit vadjacent portions of the pen and the closure, and it consists of an improved form of vthe hinge memberswhich may be applied to said parts, one of them being held in lined relation and the other adjustable andy also of an improvement in the details fol" the saine which will be described herein, and will be more delinitely set forth in the claims.`
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Fig. `l is la side elevation or a gate and adjoining portions of the panel of an animal pen with a gate and hinges embodying the features oi my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlargedhorizontal section on line 2 2 of' Fig. l. Figs. 3 andfll are transverse sections on lines 3 3 and respectively of Fig. 2, thel cut away portions of Fig. 2 bein replaced to make it complete as in Fig. l. ig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of hinge adapted to be used on square or flat side rails, oron siding when used in the construction of the enclosure.
Referring to the drawing, A. represents the side rails of a gate made of tubular material 4and B the adjacent side rails of the panel ot an animal pen, also made of tubular material. rlhe fillers of the gate having their ends con.n nected to top and bottom rails D are represented by C, and the fillers in the panel oi? the pen having their ends connected to the top and bottom rails F are represented by E. The side rails B are generally set in a curb G, and the top and bottom rails of the gate are connected to the kside rails A by the ,elbows H.

The main member I is provided with an extension adjustable longitudinally consisting of two parts L inserted between the inner ends of the main member and its mating portion. This ex* tension is adapted to encircle an adjacent filler and is clamped thereon by the smaller bolt M and` also by the adjacent bolt `lil` passed through the inner ends ofy the main member l and its mating portion J. The inserted ends of the adjustable extension L is slotted where the bolt K passes through it as shown, whereby it may be adjustedy to suit the distance of the filler from the side rail. kThis arrangement will hold the kmain member of the hinge in fixed position on the gate, Or the closure yto rwhich it may be attached.
A pivot member consisting of a main part N and a clamping part O is placed on one oi the -side rails of the panelfadjacent to the hinge member l, and is held thereon by tightening the bolt P which through the outwardly extending ends of the parts N and O. i rlhe other end of the part O is adapted to catch over a rib Q on the adjacent end of the part N, and when the bolt is passed P is tightened it will clamp the parts N and' securely on the side rail B. rl`wo or more similar hinges are used to support the gate,

A latch R adapted to contact with'a catch S applied to an opposite portion ofthepanel, may be pivoted to one of the fillers and be pr vided with a lock T, all in the usual manextent and be a little wide orfa little narrowfor the gate, this may be corrected by djusting the pivot member on the side rail the pivot member may be set a little closer to the gate by torsional movement on the side-rail which may be had by loosening the bolt P and twisting the partsv N and C around on the cylindrical side rail until the pivot bolt U occupies the proper position.
lf a little narrow this may be corrected by twisting the parts N andy O on the side rail in the opposite direction.
If the opening in the panel where the l gate is to be'placedsliould vary to a certain lll a little wide, the forked end N! ol2k being secured by the pivot bolt U in lixed relation to the gate or other closure used, and the end of the adjustable pivot member in which said pivotv bolt is inserted being close to the side rail B, the pivot will be securely held in positionl and will not be so liable to become disarranged as it the pivot was approximately half way between the side of the panel and the gate, and the hinge member was also adjustable on the side rail of the gate.
Fig. 5 is a modiied form of my hinge which is adapted to be applied to enclosure having square or fiat sided material, V being` the side rail of the closure and Y? the adjoining side rail of the enclosure. X represents the main hinge member which may kbe securedv to the member V by bolts or screws in the usual manner. l represents the pivot member which is preferably a fiat piece of metal with outstanding lugs. `Y having holes therein for the reception of the hinge bolt to which the main hinge member is pivoted. The pivot member Y is provided with slots Z through which the` bolts connecting it to the member TW are passed. The hinge may be adjusted by loosening these bolts and sliding the pivot member in or out on the bolts passed through these slots, so as to accomplish a result similar to twisting` the members N and on the side rail B.
rFhe latch R is preferably made long enough so it may be adjusted ,in the catch S without being drawn away from it. The hinge is exceedingly simple and is eiicient and reliable in operation.
What I claim is:
l. In hinges for gates, doors and the like, forming closures, a hinge member secured to the closure in fixed relation thereto and its pivot end extending out beyondv an adjacent edge of 'the structure to which the cross-section on said edge of the structure, a
pivot member applied to saidy cylindrical side-rail with its pivot end extending out therefrom at substantiallyvright angles to the plane of the structure, said pivot-mem ber being adjustable by a torsional. move-A menton the side-rail, and means to pivotaily connect the hinge member and the pivot member together.
3. In hinges for gates and the like, having side rails and spaced `apart fillers, a main hinge member applied to one olt the side rails, a mating member adapted to clamp the hinge member to the side-rail and hold it in ined' relation thereto, an extension member comprising two mating members clamped on an adjacent filler-.aud having one set of their ends inserted,between the adjacent ends of the hinge member and its mate, slotted holes in said inserted ends, a bolt passed through the hinge member and its mate and through the slotted holes in the extension members, whereby said exf tension members may be adjusted to connect with the filler and the hinge member will be oreadily connected to. the'side-rail, a pivot member adjustably connected to the structure to which the gate is applied and means to pivotally connect the hinge member and pivot member together.
