nvnronn'ron ron riieurnsfi Application filed January 6, Serial Ne. 349,781;
To all whom it may concern." I
Be it'known that LELIAs WInrH-FnnY, a
citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, resid- P ingat Aarau, Laurenzvorstadt, Switzerland,
have invented certain new and useful Im-- provements in Evaporators'tor Liquids; and I do hereby declare the following to be a "clear, full, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in} the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to letters or fig ures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
This invention relates to improvements in heat interchange devices and particularly to heating bodies used in evaporating liquids;
Experiments carried out on evaporators for liquids provided with vertical heated channels for the circulation and evaporation of the liquid to be evaporated, have shown that the precipitation in solid form of substances contained in the liquid such as salts, takes place preferably at the upper edge of these channels, thus causing a rapid diminution of the effective area of the passage and of the transmission of heat at these points and it may even lead to a complete filling up of the area of the channels whereupon the evaporation is then made totally impossible.
The object of this invention is to eliminate the drawback referred to. To this end the walls of the channels for the passage of the liquid in the evaporator are provided with a scraping device for the purpose of preventing the formation of scale at the walls of said channels by actuating said.
scraping device.
The accompanying, drawing illustrates way of example two modes of carrying'out the invention and a number of details thereof. In this drawing:
Fig. l is a vertical section through an evaporator for liquids provided with a heat ing body of concentrically arranged vertical annular chambers and fitted with a scraping device.
Fig. 2 is a plan thereof.
F 3-10 show in front and side views four different exemplifications of the scrap ers adapted to work on the upper edge of the heating body.
Fig. 11 is a vertical section through an evaporator provided with a scraping device,
- -Referring at first to i 7 drawing, 1 designates a cylindrical evapo- .horizontal rod and thescraper blades 6 the scraper blades ct which extend over the greatest part of the outer surfaces of the heatingfbodles. v
igs. 1 and E2 of the rating vessel. l vithin this vessel 1 vertical hollow annular'heating bodies 2 are arranged concentrically one within the other. The
"hollow spaces '3 or these bodies communicate plurality of with a pipe 4 and by means of a connecting pipes 5 witlreach other. The scraper blades .6 are arranged above the upper edges of the heating bodies 2 and-act like clamps which project over the upper edges of said bodies. Saidscraper blades 6 are fixed to vertical rods 7, which are carried on a horizontal rod 8 the latter being fined to a vertical shaft 9. A bevel wheel 10 is mounted on said vertical shaft. Any rotating motion imparted to said bevel-wheel causes the scrapers to move along the circular edges of the heating bodies. The vertical rods 7 are adapted to be adjusted along the are preferably arranged react in a resilient manner on the heating bodies in order to avoid any troubles thatmight arise from the edges of the hollow bodies 2 not being uniform in shape when the shaft 9 andwith it the scraping device is rotating and making thus a machining of said edges not necessary.
In imparting rotation to the shaft 9 the upper edges or" the heating bodies 2 are thus scraped and any precipitation in the act of being deposited removed with the object to maintain a tree passage for the circulation of the liquid and to provide for an unrestricted heat interchange between the heating bodies and theliquid.
The scrapers shown in Figs. 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 is shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of thick wires, or flat scrapers as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 may be used. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate scrapers adapted to be used on rectangular edges of heating bodies, and in Figs. 9 and 10 scrapers are shown which are provided with ins terohangeable shoes 11 acting as scraping faces.
The scrapers shown in Figs. 3, 4c, 7, 8 9 and 10 are bent in such a way that they are pressed by their own spring action in a re silient manner against the surfaces of the heating body, the scraper shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is a plate spring. 7
Another modification of the scrapers is shown in Fig. 11 which differ from those shown in detail in their respective length in as much as the scrapers shown in Fig. 11 extend over the greater part of the height :v the heating bodies.
W hat I claim now as my invention is:
1. Evaporator for liquids, consistingoi a vessel, of vertical hollow annular heating bodies concentrically arranged one within the other and inside the vessel, a scraping rotatable device acting on the outer suriaces of said heating bodies durbodies "for the purpose of preventing the precipitation of scale on said heating bodies. Evaporator for liquids, consisting of a vessel, of vertical annular hollow heating bodies concentrically arranged one within the other and inside the vessel, a scraping device acting on the upper edges of the surfaces of said heating bodies and provided with scrapers of clamp shape, which project over the upper edges of the heating bodies, said scrapers being carried on a rotatable member acting as beam.
Evaporator for liquids, consisting of a vessel, oi vertical annular hollow heating bodies concentrically arranged one within the other and inside the vessel, a scraping device acting on the upper edgesof the vessel, of vertical annular hollow heating bodies concentrically arranged one within the other and inside the vessel, ascraping device acting on the upperedges of, the surfaces of. said heating bodiesand provided with scrapers which projectover the upper edges or" the heating bodies, and press against said edges in a resilient manner, said scrapers being carried on rotatable beam and arranged adjustably inthe directionoii the beam, for the purposeot preventlng the precipitation of substances contained in the liquid to be evaporated in the shape of scale on said bodies.
v6, Evaporator for liquids, consisting of a vessel, of vertical annular hollow heating bodies, concentrically arranged one within the-other and inside the vessel,a scraping device acting on the upper edges of the surfaces of said heating bodies-and provided with scrapers which project over the upper edges oi the heatingbodies and press against said edges in a resilient manner, said. scrapers being carried on a rotatable beam and arranged adjustably in the direction of the beam and provided with interchangeable scraping faces, for the purpose oi preventing the precipitation of substances contained inthe liquid to be evaporated in l the shape of scale on said bodies.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my invention, 1 have signed my name.
ELIAS WInrH-FREY.
