Kinsnn, J11, a citizen of the United fdtates, and a resident of Altoona, Blair County, Strite of Pennsylvania, have invented certein new and useful Improvements in Means for Supplying Live Blower Steam and Smoke- Lifter Steam in Locomotives, o1 whichthe following is a specification.
The present invention relates to locomo tives and more particularly to the means for supplying the live blower steam and smoke lifter steam. Heretot'ore the live blower steam and smoke litter steam have been controlled by valves in the cab, thus requiring steanipipes extending from the cab to the front of the locomotive. As these pipes are located on the outside of the locomotive there is considerable condensationtherein. The aim of the present invention is to eli. .inate this condensation by doing away with the pipes on the outside of the locomotive; It is a further object to relieve to some extent the congestion of pipes and valves in the cab.
To these ends the invention consists of a blower or smoke lifter valve in the smoke box or at the front of the locomotive and means for controlling said valve from the cab. body from the outside of the shell without in any way requiring dismounting or the said body. Outside the shell the bonnet 1s provided with a housing or casing portion 42 which has an opening in its opposite sides as at 13 and a l, (Figure 6). The valve stem comprises two portions, an inner part 15 and an outer part 46. At its inner end the part 45 has a projection and slot connection with the valve disk 36 so that when the stem is rotated the disk is also turned with it, but the bonnet together with the stem may be withdrawn from the body without disturbing the disk. At its outer end the part 455 has a square head i7 di posed in a corresponding recess in the inner end of the part 16, the outer end of this latter part having a quadrant arm 48 secured thereto in any suitable manner. The swinging of the arm a8 will therefore turn the disk 36 and open or close the valve. In the present instance, spring means is provided to turn the valve in one direction and a connection is made to the arm 4.8 to turn it in the other. Bis shown the par 16 of the valve stem has a pair of spaced arms d9 secured thereto the said arms being disposed within the housing 42. A pin 50 is carried by the housing and a link .32 slotted throughout the greater part or its length is disposed with the pin 50 in the slot intermediate its ends one end of the link being connected by a pin 53 with the arms 19 and the other end connected bymeans ot' a pin 54 to a spring abutment A second spring abutment 56 is pivotally mounted on the pin 50 and a compression spring 57 is interposed between said abutments. As a result the spring acts through the link 52 and arms 49 to turn the valve stem in one disc tion, that is, in the closing direction. The valve is opened of course by turning the arm 48 int .e opposite direction. One feature or the spring arrangement for closing the valve described above, is that the varying or increased force of the spring as it is compressed is exerted on the stem as a substantially uniform resistance. T his will be apparent from a study of Figure 6 of the drawings. When the arms 49 turn to the right as viewed in said figure the axis of pin describes an arc of a circle. The axis of pin 50 however is fixed so that the outer spring abutment 55 through the link 52 wi l be moved up wardly as viewed in said figure. Hence the geometrical arm from the axis of the stem to the line of action of the spring decreases as the valve opened and of course this means that the force resisting opening of the valve does not increase with the compression of the spring.
The smoke litter valve 27 is like the blower valve just described except that its body 29 does not have a connection for the steam hose. Steam is supplied through a pipe 26 to the inlet chamber 38, communication with the outlet chamber 3 1 being controlled by the valve disk 36, said outlet chamber 34 being connected to the pipe 28 which extends to the top of the stack.
As previously stated, according to the present invention, these valves are operated and controlled from the cab of the locomotive. To this end a flexible connector 58 is secured to the quadrant arm a8 and extends to the cab so that when said connector is pulled the valve will be opened against the opposition of the spring. A similar flexible connector 59 extends from the cab to the quadrant arm 60 of the smoke lifter valve so that this valve is operated in the same manner as the blower valve. Preferably the connectors 58 and 59 are disposed in the hand rail 61 on the side of the locomotive.
. Any suitable means may be disposed within the cab of the locomotive for actuating the connectors 58 and 59. According to the present invention however a bar 62 Lshaped in cross section is secured at its front end to a front wall 63 of the cab. in any suitable manner as the bolt connections Gel, said bar being disposed horizontally. A bracket arm 65 carried by the cab is secured to the bar so as to steac the same. The bottom edges of the flanges oithe bar are serrated as at 66, while the opposite upper edges of the flanges are smooth. A pair of handles are provided each having a hooked upper end 67 slidable on a smooth edge of a flange and also rockable to carry the tooth 68 into and out of engagement with one of the serrations 66, a suitable hand grip 69 being provided to manipulate the handle.
One of these handles is slidable on a flange at one side of the bar and a second handle is slidable on the opposite flange. The connector 58 is secured to an arm 70 on one of the handles and the connector 59 to a similar arm on the other.
Normally the two valves are closed and when it is desired to open one or the other, the proper handle 69 is gripped and turned in a. direction to tree its tooth 68 from the serrations and is then slid along the I bar to the right as viewed in Figure 10. Through the flexible connector this will turn the stem or" the valve against the opposition of the valve spring in a direction to open the valve. When the valve has been opened to the desired amount, on letting go of the operating handle, the pull on the same will automatically turn it in a. oirection to throw its tooth 68 into engagement with one of the serrations, thus holding the valve at any desired degree of opening.
Although the invention has been described. in connection with a specific embodiment thereof it is to beunderstood that it is not thus limited but includes modifications and 1 eam changes come Within scope the appended claims;

In a locomotive, valve body secured to the shell on the inside thereof, said shell having an opening, a removable valve bonnet extending through said opening into the body, means on the outside of the boiler shell securing the bonnet in the body, and a valve stem carried by and extending through said bonnet to the exterior of the boiler.

In a locomotive, a blower nozzle adapted to discharge into the stack, a steam engagement with I pipe within the boiler shell extending from the steam dome directly to said nozzle, a valve in said pipe, said valve secured to the smoke box shell and having a stem extending outside the shell, and'means for operating said valve from the cab.
21. In a locomotive, a blower valve secured to the boiler shell on the interior and at the front end thereof, and means to effect operation of said valve from the cab.

In a locomotive, a. blower valve mounted within the boiler shell at the smoke box end having its stem extending outside the shell, a hollow hand rail on the side of the locomotive, an arm on said stem, yielding means acting to oppose opening of the valve, and a flexible connection extending from the cab through said rail to said arm.
26. In a locomotive, a smoke lifter valve in the smoke box within the boiler shell having a stem extending outside the shell, an arm on said stem, a connector extending from said arm to the cab, and a spring acting to close said valve.
27. In a locomotive, a smoke lifter valve in the smoke box within the boiler shell having a stem extending outside the shell, an arm on said stem, a connector extending from said arm to the cab, and a spring acting to oppose turning of said stem in one direction.
28. In a locomotive, a smoke lifter valve at the front of the boiler, a bar within the cab, a member slidable on said bar, a connectionfrom the member to the valve for actuating the valve by movement of said member, and means to hold the member in any one of a plurality of positions along said bar.
29. In a locomotive, a smoke lifter valve adjacent the front end of the boiler, a spring acting to close said valve and a ratchet device in the cab connected to the valve to open the same in opposition to the spring.

In a locomotive, a smoke lifter valve body secured to the shell on the inside thereof, said shell having an opening, a removable valve bonnet extending through said opening into the body, means on the outside of the boiler shell securing the bonnet in the body, and a valve stem carried by and extending through said bonnet to the exterior of the boiler.

Ina locomotive, a valve in front of the cab and means to actuate said valve ineluding a bar in the cab having a smooth edge and an opposite serrated edge, and a handle having a hook slidable and rockable on said smooth edge, said handle having a tooth adapted by rocking the'handle to be moved into and out of engagement with said serrations.
83. in a locomotive, a pair of valves located in front of the cab and means for actuating said valves including an I-bar having one edge of each flange serrated, a pair of handles each having a hook slidable and rockable on the smooth edge of the flange, and each having a tooth adapted by rocking the handle to be moved into and out of engagement With said serrations.
