Application filed September 7, le/3L Serial No. 499,012.
To all whom t may concern.' n
Be it lrnown that l, ROBERT E. Lian, acitizen of the United States, residing` at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burners7 oit which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas burners, and has as itsrobject a burner particularly adapt-- ed to be placed in stoves andturnaces oi the coal burning` type, for the purpose of igniting the fuel whenever a re is to be kindledl The burner of the present invernk tion is intended, primarily, for the.above mentioned purpose and is constructed'so to be placed within a furnace or stove irnmediately beneath the grate.
An object of the invention is `to provide a burner having a plurality of iuel orifices or exit apertures which are protected. by means of a suitable hood or other covering' means from foreign matter, such as ashes and the like, which falls Jr'rom the iire-box and has a tendencyy to clog the jet oriices.
Another object of the invention is to provide the fuel oriiices with protecting` means of a type having a very narrow topk and sloping walls which tend to deflect the toreign'matter away trom the burner and prevent the matter from collecting; upon the hood or detiecting` means.
A still further object of the inventionis 'to employ the deflector as means against which the jets may be impinge'd and laterally vdeflected so kas to produce a name oi greater intensity and area. c
The above and other objectsv of the invention of a more obvious ch'aract are ac complished by providing; a burner eompris- 'ing a tube having a plurality oi series ot jet openings arranged, preferably7 in parel lel relation Immediately above the jet openings or apertures and between the series are positioned jet or'ame detlecting walls which extend ir( iwardlyj and over `the aper? tures in diverging directions so as to project the jets issuing'from the apertures of the series in opposite direc-tions; n
The flame deflecting wallsafter extending over the apertures continue upwardly in converging directions to meet and vthereby to form a hood or protector having down- *wardly sloping` walls with a very narrow top which will not collectfsoot, ashes and other foreign matter.
more clear from a reading of the Ytollowin /wardly entendinen detlec`j Y Vconiplishing` this result without materially The construction above described will be description ot a Few embodiments ot the invention which are also `illustrated in the acconipanying;` drawings.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view ot one form which the invention inay take.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view ot a inodiiied embodiment of the invention.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View ot' the form shown in Figure l.
Figure/l` is a cross sectional `View ot' the forni of the device shown in Ff rc2,
Figure 5 is a plan view ci a stil.` Jfurther type of burner. l Figure 6 is a side elevational view olf the device shown in Figure 5 and Figure 7 is a crossr section ci the burner oli' Figures 5 and (i. n
Referring; to the drawings ttor a more detailed descriptionl and more particularly to Figs. 'l and 3, l() indicates burner tube having; two series ot' gas exit apertures il formed in its top wall7 the series being arranged in parallel relation as shown clearly in Figure Each series comprises a plurality of apertures entending;` longitudinally ot the burner slightly spaced apart; and lietween the two series is positioned a rod l2, rectaugular in cross section and secured at each end to the tube by means of: bolt lf3! Vlt will be noted .that the yrofl is arranged with one et its edges abutting the surface oif the tube between the series oi" apK-irturesv sor that it has a wall or side lil extending upward v` and outwardly over each series ot apertures the two walls it extending; upwardly in dive direc tions. Since l'liewslls are located irninedi- 95 ately the miertures the iet-s is from the latter will be inipinged the i ls deflected laterally' at clina n from the vertir ly thus detecting tlie'various jetsk it has heen found that the dame is if eater intensity and covers :i larger area; the up ng walls lelacimpedingthe passage oi the jets.,` as ocn curs when a deflecting wall extending in a downward direction over the apertures ,is
employed. j y c n y f The rod 12 serves not only as a meansfor directing the 'llames in a proper and de- 110 ertures from 'toreign matter and thereby maintains them open at all times. rlhe walls .is aft ending over the apertures meet 'i the uuwardly est/ending; and couvergiun` sides or walls ot the rod. which merge at the top 16. Bv thus providing` a hood or deilector with a very narrow top there no tendency tor foreign matter to collect upon the delector, since the waste is directed downwardly and away from the burner by the side walls 15.
The form ot the device shown in Fixtures and il is slightlj.' different in general con- 15 struction 'from the abore described enibodiment oit the invention, but; is marked by the same general characteristics. and functions in substantially the same manner. burner tube 1T is provided with a plurality of spaced nipples 18 arranged in sets ot two, spaced apart, the spaces between the sets icing', preferably, somewhat greater t the spaces between the individual nipple t each'set. Each nipple is 'formed will a reduced shank 19 fitting within openings 2O in the top oi the tube. rlhe shanlhas a central borev 2.1 communicating` with a pair of' upwardly extending' and divernjing jet orifices 22 which open at their upper ends in the botton'rwalls 23 of? side recesses 211 in the nipples. The top walls of the recesses extend outwardly and upwardly o the orifices 23 and 'tunction in the saine manner with relation to these orices as do the walls 14, in the device. ot lfligures l and 3. with respect. to the apertures 11. The iets issuingfrom the apertures impinfre zurainst. the wall 25 and are projected. laterally at an inclination from the vertical by the-sc walls. Each nipple is `termed above the recesses with upwardly convcugine` des which meet :it-the top ot the nipple o form a. very narrow top which will not.` collect soot and foreign matter. Ashes and the like.y falling; vfrom the grate, will be directed downwardly by the eines 26 and away trom the criticos 22.
li? desired` additional hoods or protectors ina]r be placed above each pair et nipples. The hoods are l! -shaped in cross section nugly fit the tops of the nipples; and e neld on the nipples ,.ys'traps 28 ing over the hoods and around the tute 17. the ends of the straps being; ,oget ier as by bolts and nuts 18. These aps may serre the dual function ol' mainninew tbc bonnets 27 in position, and also olt iedly holding' the nipples within their burner tube openings 20. lilith respect toI this vform ot the device it should be noted that it is possible to clean anyr pair of nipples without disturbing the remaining nipples; this may be done by simply loosen*- ing a strap which permits the bonnet and pair of nipples to be taken from the tube.
The torni of the burner tube shown in Figures 5, G and i very similar to the illustration ot the invention in Figures 1 and Referring; to Figures 5, 6 and '7, it will he noted that the tube 10 is coiled to Atorni a burner ot circular outline, and has the spaced series ot apertures 1l above and between which is mounted the circular rod 12 held in position. by means ot' screws 13 passinj through the rod and burner tube and having substantially squared or rectancular heads 29 fitting' in soc iets or recesses in the top ot the rod.
lt is thoiigrht that 'further description of this torni of the device is imnecessary, since it 'functions in the saine manner that disclosed in l? ires 1 and 3, and in other construction is identical to that Jforni ot the device. c
.lt should be understood that the embodiments of the invention as illustrated and described in detail might be considerably varied without departingfrom the scope ot ie invention` which is more clearly defined the v.Following claims. l. claim: 1.
