Y PUTTEE [DRIIVIIMCER.
Application led June 2,1221. Serial No. 474,485.
'Angelea in 'the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Puttee Trimmers, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention is a puttee trimmer including a support for a puttee and a mec`nanism laterally shiftable relative to the puttee and Vits support and carrying rotary cutters for trimming oifthe ends of a puttec, and also vhavingv longitudinally extending spaced blades adaptedto engage the puttee after the end cutters have functioned for slitting the puttee atopposite sides of the seam formed therein. Byv this arrangement the trimming of the puttee ,is accomplished by a.' single operation.
The invention will be readily understood from thefollowing description of the accompanying` drawings, in which: y
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe de` vice constructedin accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 isa transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. y v
Figs. 3 and 4 are detailsections onthe lines 3-3 and 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line of Fig. 2.
The machine preferably includes a suitable table 1 having a guide bar 2 upon the same and also provided with brackets 3 extending upwardly from the respective ends ofthe table and connected by a guide bar 4.
rlhe work supporting means comprises a grasping device 'formed of scissor arms 6 pivoted in a bracket 7 beneath table 1 so that said arms extend upwardly in order to hold a puttee support and the puttee mounted thereon. Two pairs of arms 6 are preferably employed and are longitudinally spaced in order to form the'necessary support for the puttee holder.
The operating ends of the arms beyond their pivotal connection 9 extend below table 1 and are connected by bars 10 which are in turn connected to operating straps 11 leading to a foot treadle 12. This treadle is pivoted at 12 as shown at13, and the opposite end of the same is provided with a laterally projecting locking lip 14 adapted to engage a notched rack 15 for holding 6 so that the seam 18 in kthe treadle in various positions so as to firmly clamp the scissor arms 6 upon thek work support.
The worksupport 1s a member 16 upon which a puttee 17 is mounted, and said support and puttee are held within scissor arms the ,puttee is turned upwardly. A A n The cutting mechanism includes bearings 20 slidable upon guide bar 4 and adapted to be locked in position by means of set'sorews @of longitudinal adjustment ofsaid supporting rods relative to the puttee, and also provides forslight angular adjustment of said supporting rods.
Longitudinally extending blades 32 which are transversely spaced from one another are supported at their respective ends by the frames 26 so that said blades extend the length of the puttee uponthe work holder', and said blades are mounted above the rotary cutters, 30, so that the latter may first operatively engage a puttee and then permit subsequent slipping of the puttee by means of said longitudinal blades.
As an instance of this arrangement, bracket arms 33 extend upwardly from frames 26, and screw rods 34 connect said bracket arms with nuts 35 threaded upon right and left hand threads 36-37 formed at the respective ends of the screw rods engaging the respective blades.
At one end of the machine the nuts 35 may be fixed in openings extending through lok i supported puttee.
the blades, While at the opposite end of the machine the nuts are slidable in slots 40 provided in said blades. The screw rods are provided with slidable operating heads il so that rotation of the same Will adjust the blades toward and away from one another. .lt will also be noted that the provision of slots LG in the longitudinal blades permits of longitudinal adjustment or supporting rods 22 and theframes 26, While still maintaining the longitudinal blades in operative position.
Handles elo extend from bracket arms 33, and in operation the handles are grasped so that vframes 26 may be elevated upon supporting rods rllhe cutting mechanism is loeclied'in this elevated position by means ot set screwsr 27, and a puttee to be trimmed then mounted upon the work holder and in the scissor arms 6. The sup porting rods 22 having been properly adjusted, the frames 26 are released and the cutting mechanism is then movedy down Wardly to cause the rotary cutters 3G to trim oil' the ends of the puttee. lt will be noted that this out may be made at the desired angle by angularly adjusting rods 22.
When cutters 3() have completed their Work, the longitudinal blades 32 Will engage the puttee at the respective sides of seam 18 in order thata subsequent depression of the cutting mechanism Will slit the The cutting mechanism may then be again elevated and the trimmed puttee removed from the Work holder.
Various changes may be made Without departing from the spirit or the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
l. A trimmer including a longitudinal Work support, a longitudinal guide, supports extending laterally from said guide and longitudinally and angularly adjustable thereon, frames slidable upon said supports, longitudinal blades adjustably connected to said frames, and rotary cutters carried by said frames and laterally spaced Jr'roin said longitudinal blades toward said work support.
2. A trimmer comprising an article holder, jaws adapted to clamp an article upon said holder and support the same, cutting mechanism shiftable laterally relative to said article holder and including longitudinal blades, and rotary cutters vlaterally spaced from said longitudinal blades and toward said article holder.
3. A trimmer :tor puttees comprising a Worlr support, crossuarms for securing the Work in snug relation to the support, rotary cutters at the ends of the support, means for vertically and horizontally adjusting the cutters, blades above the support and movable toward and away from the latter, and manually operable means foractuating the blades.
et. A trimmer for puttees 'comprising a Work support, means for clamping the Work to the support, rotary cutters for engagement with the end portions of the Work, a pair of blades above the support and movable toward and away from the latter, and means for adjusting the relative positions of the blades with respect to each other.
ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this speciiication.
ARTHUR HUGHES.
