HEADLIGHT.
Application filed March 27, 1922. Serial No. 547,120.
li s of the general type commonly employed on motor vehicles, and it has for its primary object to provide a headlight in which the lamp is at all times concealed from View, thus effectually eliminating'the bhnding effect which is incident to exposure ofthe brilliantly glowing lamp filament within rected against the reflecting elements 2 of the main casing. 4
The upper rear edge of the supplementary casing 3 is shaped to form a rim 6 for seating upon the adjacent portion of the rim 7 of the main casing, and supplementing said rim 6 is a ring-like downward extension 6 for embracing the portion of the mein 'casing rim 7 located below the casing 3, whereby the latter is detachably and rigidly mounted upon said main casing.
' The conductor wires which lead to the lamp are preferably directed through a passage formed by a channel member 8 which is rigidly attached to the lamp casing 1, leading from the rear part of said the range of vision of persons approaching.
' headlight.
A further ob ect is to )rovide a headli 'ht T .l J ny means of which the rays of light emanating; from the lamp are projected forward at i is slight downwardly inclination for illumi- 1 nating the roadway and for preventing the obtrusive glare of headlights as heretofore commonly constructed.
With these and other objects in View, the invention resides in the features of construction and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter he described reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure .1 is a front elevation of s hca llight constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a central vertical section or the some; and y,
1 Figure 3 is a section on line l-k-fihllig tlz Referring to said drawings 1 indicates a glam-p casing ofan ordinary parabolic form,
tion, 13
within the rear part of which is fitted in an approximately upright position aufiat, or
substantially fiat circular reficctinlreleinent, 7
preferably a glass mirror Q. Mounted upon and occupying a position in front oi the upper portion of the casing is a supplementary casing 3 which viewed in front elem of crescent form and which is approximately sen1i-cylindrical in central cross section, shown in Fig. 2.
Disposed centrally within the casing 3 to fees downward and rearward at an angle of about is a stationary parabolic reflector 4 of relatively small size to which a lamp 5 is fitted in such manner that the rumor portion of thedirect rays therefrom andthe rays reflected by said reflector W111 be dicasing to and over the rim 7 of the latter. A corresponding bow or hump 6 formed in the rim 6 of the supplementary casing allows for the'fitting of the latter over the adjacent end of said channel member.
inged centrally upon an inclined flange 9 formed upon the forwardly bowed lower edge portion of the supplementary casing is the similarly bowed upper portion of a frame .10 which has its lower portion disposed vertically for seating against the front of the main casing and which is detachably held in rigid relation to the latter by a suitably spring catch 11. Sit-i frame 10 has mounted therein a glass face 12 of urcuateiy-curved form in horizontal section, through which pass the lightrays reflected forward by the mirror or other refleeting element 2, said frame and glass together cpnetituting a door which permits 0* convenient access to the interior of the headlight. I
l V hat is claimed is- 1, A headlight comprising a main casing fleeting element, and a hinged door embodying a glass face disposed in closing relation to the front of said main casing below said supplementary casing, the upper edge of said door being arcuately curved to conform to the lower edge of said supplea reflecting element located within the rear part of said casing, a casing of concaveconvex form in central section supplementary to the main casing, said supplementary casing being mounted upon the upper part of said mam' casing, and facing rearwardly, said supplementary casing having a rim which is extended in ring-like form for seating upon the front edge portion of said main casing, a lamp located behind said supplementary casing, a reflector embracing said lamp and disposed to concentrate the rays from the latter upon said reflecting element, a door frame shaped to conform to the under side of said supplementary casing and that portion of the main casing below said supplementary casing, and a glass face fitted in said frame, said ing arcuately curved in horizontal section. 3. A-headlight comprising a main casing having a vertically disposed open front end, a reflecting element located Within the rear glass face 'bepart of said casing, a casing supplementary to the main casing, said supplementary casing being of concave-convex form in central section and being mounted upon the upper part of said main casing and facing rearwardly, said supplementary casing having a rim which is extended in ring-like form for embracing said open front of the main casing and having an arcuately curved lower edge, a lamp located interiorly of said supplementary casing, arefiector located adjacent to and forward of said main casing and disposed for concentrating rays front the lamp upon the aforesaid reflecting element, a door frame hinged to the lower central curved edge portion of said supplementary casing, said frame being shaped to conform to said edge portion and to the main casing below said supplementary casing', and a glass face carried by said frame.
In testimony whereof, I allix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
