Be it known that I', CHARLES F. FREAY, citizen of the United States, residing at Kennedy, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop-Saw Machines, of which the following is a specification.

lt is theA object of this invention to produce a machine of the character stated wherein are combined parts of special construction and arran ement, and which is provided with a sing e operatinglever that controls the feeding devices by horizontal movements, and by a vertical movement brings into` action the membersv by which the saw and its frame are raised.
To illustrate the construction and arrangement of the parts of this invention, the accompanying drawings are made a portion ofthis application. Fig. 1 is a top plan view of all the parts assembled. Fig'.k 2 is a side view ofthe operating lever showing the construction of its vertically movable fulcrum. Fig. 3 is a side view of the belt pulleys and relating parts, the saw shaft and feed drive shaft being in section. Fig. 4 is a front view of the supporting frame, showing the manner of suspending the saw frame, and the winding drumy and clutch on the saw shaft.
Throughout the drawings` and description the same numerals, are used to refer to the same parts.
Considering the drawings, a base frame is 'formed bythe beams 1,2', 8, 4, 5 and 6k which carry' the operating parts. It will be understoodA that this invention is not confined to the particular construction ofthe base frame set forth. The transverse shaft 7` is the feed drive shaft, and carries a sliding sleeve 8. The sleeve is'moved back and forth upon the shaft'by the fork 9 of the operating lever 10 the fulcrum of which engages the vertical rod 11. The fork end 9` ofthe lever engages the annularly grooved member 12 on the sleeve 8,y and the sleevejcarries the oppo sitely disposed gears'13 and14. The gear 15 is a part ofthe feeding device mechanism and is placed asshown in Fig. 1, in the path of the sliding gears, in order that the feeding devices may bey operated in either direc. tion, depending upon which of the sliding gears is moved into mesh by the horizontal movement of the lever. The gear 15 is located on the end ofthe shaft 16, which is supported inbearings 17 and `18. At the other end ofthe shaft 16 is a bevel gear 19 engaging a likegear 20 on transverse shaft 21, which shaftis supported in bearings 22 and 23; At the end of shaft 21 is a bevel gear 24 that engages the like gear 25 on shaft 26. The shaft 26 has the bearings 27 and 28, and carries the drum 29 provided with spikes 8O for feeding the timbers beneath the saw. The drum 29 is usually lessened in diameter in the middle as illustrated to betterl position the timber to be sawed.
Power is applied to the working members by the belt 31 which engages both the top and bottom of the pulley 32 on the feed drive shaft 7, as shown in 8. The belt is held upon the .upper portion of the pulley by means of the weighted idler roller 83, on stub shaft 84, carried by arm 85 supported in bearing upheld by the standard or legs 37.
The saw frame comprises the convergin4 beams 38' and 39 through which the shaft7 passes, and the cross piece 40 and tie bolts 41 and 42 connect the beams at their outer ends. The passingof the shaft 7 through the beams 38' and 39 pivotally supports their ends, enabling the outer end tofbe raised and lowered as willy be readily understood. The saw 43 is carried on the outer end of the saw shaft 44 in bearin`gs45 and 46, and the saw shafty carries the pulleyv 47 aboutY which the belt 3 1 passes as shown and bywhich the saw is driven.
The saw shaft is supported by tackle connected4 with a supportingl frame 48 having the cross-piece 49, The tackle-comprises the cord 50 having one end connected with the fastening 51 on bearing 45, and passing thence overcord pulley 52 on the yard or cross-piece 49, thence around the'pulley 53 attached by the hanger 54 to the bearing 45, thence aroundthe pulley 55 on the cross piece, thence around! the pulley 56 attached' by hanger or shank 5,7 to the bearing 46, thence around the pulley 59 attached by the hanger 58 to the cross piece, thence downwardly and around the hoisting drum 60, and upwardly around the pulley 61 and 62, below which the end of the cord is attached to the weight 63. The hoisting drum is loose on the saw shaft 44, and it may be connected operatively with that shaft when desired by a vertical movement of the operating lever 10. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cord 64 is connected to the lever, and passes downwardly through the eye 65 on the beam 2. From the eye the cord 64 passes upwardly around the pulley 66 on the side beam 39 of the saw frame, and thence to the fastening 67 on the clutch-operating arm 68. The arm is held outwardly from the beam 39 by the coil spring 69. The function of the springreturned arm 68 is to move the collar 69an on the saw shaft into contact with the loose drum 60, which it slides along the shaft until the members 70 and 7l of the clutch are engaged and the power of the saw shaft applied to the hoisting drum.
In the operation of this invention, the horizontal movements of the lever 10 on the pivot rod 11 bring either gear 13 or 14 at will into mesh with the interposed gear 15 of the log-feeding devices, and the log or timber may be moved in either direc@ tion as desired. If the outer end of the lever l0 be raised its fulcrum will slide up the pivot rod or pin 11, and the cord 64 will be drawn upon. This causes the arm 68 to close the drum 60 against the clutch members, and the saw shaft will revolve the drum thereby drawing upon the cord 50 and raising the saw, the weight 63 descending at the same time. It is intended that the weight shall sufficiently balance the weight of the saw and frame, to enable the frame to be held up by hand when the motor is stopped. When the motor is running and the saw is raised bythe power, the feeding devices are set in motion at the same time, and the timber fed to the required extent for the next cut. It will be noted that the lever may be moved horzontally whatever its position upon the pivot pin 11. When the lever is lowered, the drum and saw shaft, are disengaged, and the saw desc-ends and saws the timber. This operation of raising the saw, and feed ing the timber is carried out repeatedly and conveniently by the operator who needs to use but the one lever either to feed the timber or to raise the saw. The operator stands near the outer end of the leverfroxn which position he can readily see when the timber or log is correctly positioned, and he can feed the timber to be cut into any desired lengths. In practicethis invention is constructed of such size and weight as will permit it to be loaded upon a truck, and transported from place to place wherever there is timber to be sawed. The power is usually derived from a gasoline engine car ried with the machine.
Having now described this invention, and explained the mode of its operation, what I claim is:
l. In a drop saw machine, the combination with feeding devices, of a saw frame having one end pivotally supported, a saw shaft and saw, a pulley on the saw shaft, an independently driven belt for revolving the pulley, a feed drive shaft, a pulley on said drive shaft, the said belt engaging the said pulley and actuatingV the feed drive shaft, reversible means fory engaging and disengaging said drive shaft and feeding devices, a lever movable in a predetermined direction for operating the said engaging means, and means driven by said saw shaft and controlled by the movement of said lever in another direction for raising the saw.
2. In a drop saw machine, the combination with feeding devices, of a saw frame having one end pivotally supported, a saw shaft and saw, a pulley an independently driven belt for revolving the pulley, a feed drive shaft, a pulley on the drive shaft, the said belt engaging the said pulley and actuating the said drive shaft, gears oppositely disposed and `arranged to slide together on said drive shaft and driven by the shaft, devices for sliding the said gears back and forth on the drive shaft including a horizontally movable lever, the said feeding devices having a gear in the path of said sliding gears whereby the feeding devices may be operated and reversed, the said lever having a vertically movable fulcrum, and means driven by the saw shaft and controlled bythe vertical movement of the lever for raising the saw.`
