- Be 1t knownthat I, dress DITSON, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Littleton, county of Arapahoe, and State of Colorad0 ,have invented a certain Oiler for Drill-Sharpener Cylinders, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to drill sharpeners, but more particularly to an oiling device for oiling the drill sharpener cylinder. A drill sharpening machine of the type to which this invention may conveniently be applied is disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 108,212, filed Septemher 3, 1921, although the device may be applied in any other connection in which it is found useful.
The object of the invention is to construct the oiling device which is preferably a gravity oilin device, as a unitary part of a self container drill sharpener, and to this end the oiling device is preferably formed as a portion of the valve chest of the controlling valve for the sharpening machine.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the invention is shown in one of its preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drill sharpener embodying the invention, partly in vertical section,
Figure 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional elevation of the machine taken through the valve chest at right angles to the direction in which Figure 1 is taken, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional elevation of the oiling device.
Referring to the drawings, the machine comprises the base A havinga main cylinder frame B suitably secured thereto as by means of the studs 0 and nuts D. A cross head rod E is movable vertically in the main cylinder frame B and carries a cross head F at its upper end, and a piston G at its lower end, operating in the cylinder bore H. The piston G has the reduced extension J operating within the guide K. Motive fluid, as air under pressure, is admitted to the hollow base A, which forms a reservoir, through the inlet L and constant pressure is maintained within the hollow base acting against the smaller end of the piston tending to move the said piston upwardly for the raising stroke. The operation of the drill sharpener is lilre that disclosed in my 'CO-pellCllllg application, Serial No. 498,212.
The operation of the machine is controlled by a throttle valve 0 movable within a valve echamber Pinthe valve chest Q and said controlling valve is actuated by the handle it operatively connected to the valve in any suitable manner.
Motive fluid pressure is supplied from the base A to the valve chamber through the main supply passage S and from thence passes into the cylinder above the piston G for the down stroke.
The valve chest Q is provided with a sepa rate oil chamber T packed with wool or other similar material U in its base, and a relief and pressure balancing tube V leads from a point above the level of the oil, through the packing U to a passage W communicating directly with the valve chamber T. The tube V is provided 1 an aperture Y in its lower portion, b :1 w a perforated packing washer Y, and a :zeedldvelve Z, operated by turning the stem a, on :vols the passage lV. A removable plug I; is preferably provided opposite the end of the pets sage W.
In the operation of the device, fluid pressure from the valve chest passes through the tube V and creates pressure on the top of the oil in the oil chamber T, which balances the pressure in the delivery passage W. The oil passes down through the wool or other packing U, by gravity, and through the perforated washer Y and the aperture X to the passage V7 and thence through the valve chamber P into the cylinder H.
The tube V also relieves the pressure above the oil without carrying the oil with it, when the fluid pressure is shut off from the entire machine, and thus keeps the pressure above and below the oil balanced at all times.
The oiling device occupies a small space and is readily accessible and contained wholly within the valve chest close to the main cylinder, in position to supply oil directly to the cylinder under substantially all conditions of operation.
I claim: y
1. In a drill sharpening machine, the combination with the main cylinder frame, piston operating in the cylinder bore of said frame, cross head rod and cross head, of a distribution valve chest and controlling valve, and a gravity oiling device for said piston comprising an oil chamber contained within the valve chest, separate from the valve chamber, and fluid pressure balancing 1neans for permitting the oil to feed by gravity from said oil chamber through the valve chamber into the bore of the main cylinder frame.
2. In a drill sharpening machine, the combination'with the main cylinder frame, piston operating in the cylinder bore of said frame, crosshead rod and-cross head, of a distribution valve chest and controlling valve, and a gravity oiling device for said piston comprislng an 011 chamber contained within the Valve chest separate from the valve chamber, a tube leading from a" point above the level of the oil to a passage below the bottom of the oil chamber connecting with the valve chamber, an aperture in the lower portion of said tube to permit oil to pass outbygravity, and a needle valve controlling said passage from the tube to the valve chamber, whereby oil is delivered to the bore of the main cylinder frame through the valve chamber.
