Be it known that l, ALBERT RosnNAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State 5 of New Jersey, have invented certain new useful Improvements in Handle-Loop Fasteners; and li do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable l0 others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and 'to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates, generally to improvements in fasteners for handles of bags and pocket-books; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply-constructed handle-loop attaching ineanslv for use, especially with bags or pocket-books, used by ladies and ordinarily known as wrist-bags.

The present invention has for its principal objects to provide a cheap and simply-constructed, as well as an efcient handle-loop attaching means, provided with a loop-receiving eye, which is secured in such a manner to the bag-member, that its position with relation thereto is rigidly fixed, and that the receiving eye will not turn, or become loose with the constant use of the hand or wrist-bag, or pocket-book, and that the handle-loops and the handle will at all times maintain their proper positions with relation to the folded edge-portion of the body Ind closing flap of the wrist-bag or pocketook.

The present invention has for its further purpose to provide the -handle-loop-recciving eye with readily detachable attaching means, for removal of the eye, if desired, so that eye-receiving plates of a 'large variety of design may be employed, whereby, whenever desired one design of plate may be readily substituted for| an eye-receiving plate of another' design.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the-present invention.

With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention con- 55 siste, primarily, in the novel handle-loop fastener for bags hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the saine, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top edge view of a wristbag or pocket-book, at the edge where the closing flap closes over the body of the bag or pocketbook, said views showing in connection therewith the handle with its attaching loops, and a pair of handle-loop fasteners attached to said edge, said fasteners' illustrating one embodiment of the principles of the present invention.

Figure 2 is a side or face view of the one end-portion or. upper corner of the bagbody, and of the handle-loop fastener se cured thereto; Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, said sect-ion being taken on line 3 3 in said Figure l; and Figure i is a rear view of the said parts.

Figure 5 is a collective view, illustrating in plan, several eye-receiving plates of different ornamental configurations.

Figure 6 is a top-edge view of a fragmentary portion of a wrist-bag or pocketbook, provided with a handle-loop fastener of a slightly modified form of construction; Figure 7 is a longitudinal vertical section o-f the same, said section being taken on line 7 7 in said Figure 6; and Figure 8 is a bottom view of the parts represented in said Figure 6.

Similar characters of reference are ernployed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the reference-character 1 indicates the top-edge of a wrist-bag or pocketbook, or that edge portion where the usual closing flap is joined onto the receiving body of the bag or pocket-book, and 2 indicates the usual handle, having suitably made loopends 3, for the reception of suitably constructed handle-loops. In the construction represented in said Figures 1, 2 and 3 these loops are made of wire, suitably bent into Cil shape, to provide an eye or loop-end 4l, curved as at 5, and diverging outwardly in opposite directions, to provide a pair of angular members 6, and each member 6 terminating in an inwardly extending 'linger 7, substantially as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. r1`hese lingers 7 are inserted in the loop-ends 3 of the handle for connection of the respective end-portions of the handle with the wire handle-loops, as will be evident from an inspection of said Figures 1 and 2.

The loop-fastener consists, essentially, of a wire fastener, the shank-portions 8 of which are suitably bent to form a receiving eye 9, with which the previouslv mentioned loop-end or eye l is operatively and loosely connected. The said shank-portions 8 are inserted through a perforation or hole 11 in an ornamental eye-plate 10, disposed upon the said top-edge 1 or" the bag or pocketbook, said shank-portions being forced into and through the said edge-portion 1, and then being passed into and through a hole or perforation 13 in a suitably shaped holding or retaining1 back-plate 12, the respective ends 14 of said shank-portions 8 being bent against the face of said baclrplate, for positively securing the several devices in their assembled relation with respect to the body and the iiap of the wrist-bag or pocket-book, To prevent turning of the said shank-portions 8 and the receivingeye 9 with relation to the ornamental eye-plate 10, the shank-receiving perforation or hole 11 is usually made of elongated configuration, as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, but as an eXtra precaution against any turning of said shank-portions 8, the back-plate 12 may be made with a raised marginal rim-portion or bead, as 15, forming an elongated receiving recess or depression 16 with which the bent andy oppositely extending ends 14e are brought into holding registration, against lateral movement upon the face of the back-plate 12, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of said Figures 3 and 4lof the drawings.

In lieu of making the said fastening members of wire, as described in the foregoing, fasteners of sheet-metal. may be employed, said fasteners, as will be seenfrom Figures 6, 7 and 8, each comprising a substantially broad loop or eye 17, for reception of the handle-loop, said loop or eye 17 having downwardly extending portions 18 which are inserted into and passed through a slot or elongated opening 2O in an ornamental eye-plate 19, disposed upon the top-edge of the bag or pocket-book, said portions 18 being forced into and through the said edgeportieri of the bag, and then being passed 'into/and through a slot or elongated opening 22 in a suitably disposed and suitably shaped holding or retaining back-plate 21,

and bent over upon the face of said backplate, as indicated in Figures 'i' and 8, so as to positively secure the various parts in their assembled relation, and to hold the loop-receiving eye against turning, as will be clearly evident.

From an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, ,and especially from that of Figure 5, it will be seen that the said eyereceiving plates may be of various marginal configurations, a number of such eye-receiving plates being furnished with each set of bag-loop fasteners, to enable the manufacturer of the completed wrist-bags or pocketboolrs, 'to use whichever design of eye-receiving plates are found most desirable to the trade; or, to permit the user of the wristor pocket-book to have these plates changed from time to time, if desired.

l am aware, also, that other changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts. without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, l do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do l confine myself to the exact 4details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

1. A handle loop for bags, pocket-books, and the like, comprising an ornamental perforated interchangeable eye-,receiving plate, a perforated back-plate, a loop-fastener consisting of an eye-portion disposed above said eye-receiving plate, and apair of shank-portions adapted tobe inserted through the perfoi-ations in said receiving` plate and said back-plate, said shank-portions being adapted to be bent over upon said back-plate, and means'connected with said back-plate to prevent lateral or turning movement of said bent-over members upon said back-plate.

2. A handle loop for bags, pocket-books, and the like, comprising an ornamental perforated interchangeable eye-receiving plate, aperforated back-plate, a. loop-fastener consisting of an eye-portion disposed above said eye-receiving plate, and a pair of shank-portions adapted to be inserted through the perforations in. said receiving plate and said back-plate, said shank-portions being adapted to be bent over upon said back-plate, and a raised marginal retaining` element extending from said back-plate to prevent lateral or turning movement of said bent-over members upon said back-plate.

3. A handle loopfor bags, pocket-books, and the like, comprising an ornamental perforated interchangeable eye-receiving plate, a perforated back-plate, 'a loop-fastener coni ,ascesi 3 sisting of an eye-portion disposed above said eye-receiving plate, and a pair of shank-portions adapted to be inserted through the per- 'forations in said receiving plate and said back-plate, said shank-portions being adapted to be bent over upon said lback-plate, and means connected with said back-plate to prevent lateral or turning' movement of said bent-over members upon said back-plate1 combined with a handle-attaching element made of wire, and comprising an eye for attachment with the eye-portion of said loop-fastener, a pair of members diverging angularly and outwardly from the eye of said handle-attaching element, and fingers extending inwardly and toward each other 'for connection therewith of the looped endportion of a handle.

A. handle loop for bags, pocket-books, and the like, comprising an ornamental perforated interchangeable eye-receiving plate, a perforated back-plate, a loop-fastener consisting of an eye-portion disposed above said eye-receiving plate, and a pair of shank-portions adapted to be inserted through the perorations in said receiving plate and said back-plate, said shank-portions being adapted te be bent over upon said back-plate, and a raised marginal retaining element extending from said back-plate to prevent lateral or turning movement of said bent-over members upon said back-plate, combined with a handle-attaching element of wire, and com prising an eye for attachment with the eyeportion of said loop-fastener, a pair of members diverging angularly and outwardly from the eye of said handle-attaching element, and fingers extending inwardly and toward each other for connection therewith of the looped end-portion of a handle. l
