'Be it known that I, JOHN T. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Maywood, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldering Irons, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in soldering irons of the type comprising in its complete organization suitable means for heating the bit, and it has for its principal object the provision of anr improved construction and arrangement by reason of which an improved operation may be obtained.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
My invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings,.5 indicates a tank of any approved type being shown in the form of a metal cylinder closed by a cap 6 at one end and a cap 7 at the opposite end. The cap 7 is provided with an opening therethrough which in turn is closed by a plug 8, which is mounted in position by means of screw threads. As is clearly shown in Fig. 2, the cap 7 is provided with an annular rib 9being adapted to seat upon a gasket 10 of lead. 'or other soft metal carried by the plug 8, upon the face of latern ally extending flange forming a part of the plug. By this construction a close fit is insured between the plug and the cap. I/Vings 11 are mounted upon the plug for use in turning'the plug into and out of position. An air pump is carried by the plug 8, the

a cylinder 12, and a piston rod 13, carrying at its outer end a head 14, by which the pump may be operated.
By means of the pump, which has a suitable outlet leading from cylinder l2 to the 55 interior `of the tank 5, ythe air within the tank may be compressed. A pipe 15 is provided leading from ytank 5 to aV screw threaded socket 16 formed upon one side of a casting 17 in the form of a tube. The 60 opposite side of the casting 17 is provided with a thickened wall portion which is provided with a longitudinal opening 18, the front end of which communicates with the socket 16, by means of an annular cored out opening 19. A laterally extending duct 20 extends from the rear end portion of the opening 18 and communicates with the interior of a sleeve 21, formed integrally with the casting 17` A tip 22, provided with a 70 tapered opening therethrough, is mounted by means of screw threads in the inner end of the sleeve 21. A stem 23 is adjustably mounted in the outer end portion of the sleeve2l, so as to be adjustable into and out 75 of contact with the tip 22, the adjustability in the construction shown being provided by means of screw threads. A handle 24 is mounted upon the turned outer end portion of the stem 23 for adjusting the position of 8o the stem, a. locking nut 25 being provided for applying thedesired resistance to the turning of the stem 23. In its inner end, the stem 23 is provided with a needle 26, which is of a shape and size to close the inner end of the opening through the tip 22, the complete closure of the opening coming at the time when the stem 23 comes into contact with the end of the tip 22.
As is clearly shownv in Fig. 1, the forward end of the tubular casting 17 is open so as to receive therein the tapered rear end of a soldering bit 27, which is held in position opposite the end of the tube by `means of a yoke 28, the arms of which are mounted in suitable sockets, formed in the wall of the tube, in the construction shown. The yoke 28 is formed of a steel bar which passes through an opening in the bit 27, having its end portions bent backward so as to cut into the sides of the soft metal bit 27. Set screws 29 are provided for holding the arms of the yoke against withdrawal.
By the means just described, the copper bit 27 is heldrigidly in position opposite the end of the tube, but out of contact therewith at all points.
In operation-the tank 5 is provided with a quantity of fuel, such as gasoline, and the air in the tank above the level of the fuel is compressed by the use of the pumping means above described. When it is desired to heat the bit 27, the stem 28 is turned for opening the bore through the tip 22, whereupon a quantity of fuel is forced out through the tip into the tube 17. yVlhen the tube hasV been thoroughly heated by burning the gasoline therein, as is customary for generating the desired heat for tools of this type, the needle valve is regulated for controlling the flowl of the vapor therethrough as will be readilyunderstood. 'Ihe flame which is projected forwardly from the end of the tube 17 is brought directly into contact with the bit 27 on all sides thereof at its rear end portion whereby it is very quickly brought to the desired temperature. When it is desired to discontinue the use of the device, the stem 23 is again turned for tightening the needle 26 in the bore of the tip 22, the contact of the stem with the rear end of the tip serving to prevent injury of the tip by the needle.
While I havev illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for .carrying my invention into eect, this is capable of variation and. modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
HavingV described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a tube open at one end; means for delivering a stream of inflammable fluid to saidtube to be burned at the open end thereof socketsformed in the opposite wall portions ofthe tube at its open end thereof; a yoke having its arms secured in said sockets; and a soldering. bit rigidly mounted on said yoke with its rear end tapered and extending into the tube but out of contact therewith.
2. In a soldering iron, the combination with a tube open at one end and means for delivering a stream of inflammable fluid to said tube to be burned at the open end thereof` of oppcsitely arranged sockets formed ini-he wall portieri of said tube; a soft metallic bit adjacent the open end of said tube;
a rod passing through said bit, the opposite ends of said rod being bent at right angles at opposite sides of said bit, the ends of said rod being caused by the bending operation to cut into said bit for holding the bit rigidly7 in position thereon, said ends of said rod being ixedly secured in said sockets, substantially as described.
3. In a soldering iron, the combination with a tube bent` aty one end thereof, of a fuel tank for delivering a stream of fluid to said tube to be burned at one end thereof, a screw threadedvalve, stem carried by said tube for regulating the flow of fluid thereto; a removable tip cooperating with said valve stem, there being al centralpassage, tapered at one end, through said tube; a needle removably carried by said stem adapted to close the openingthrough said tube by. forward adjustment of said valve stem; acap having a central opening therethrough mounted on one end of said tank; aplug screw-threaded in the opening of said cap v; means for assuring a tight connection between said plugv and said cap; land al pump carriedv b said plug and extending into said tank, su stantially as described.
4. In a soldering iron, the combination with a tube open at .one end and a soldering-k bit carried by and extending into said tube but out of contact therewith, of a fuel tank` for delivering a stream of inflammable fluid to said tube to be burned; at the open end thereof; a cap having a'n opening, therethrough mounted on one end ofv said tank; a plug having an outwardly extending flange secured in theopening of said cap; a, pump carried by said plug; an annular groove formed in said outwardly extending flange; a metallic gasket seated in said groove; and an annular rib formed on saidcap adapted to engage saidgasket, substantially as described.
5. A device loff-the class described comprising a tube; a bit carried thereby, and.extending into said tube but not into contact therewith, the opposite ends of said bit being tapered; means for delivering a stream of inflammable fluid to said tube to be burned at one end thereof; a sleeve integrally formed on said tube; am valve stem. screwthreaded in said sleeve; a removable tiphaving a tapered opening screw-threaded in one end of said sleeve; and a needle removably positioned in one end of said valve stem and projecting outwardly therefrom, said needle adapted to close the opening. through said tip by a forward adjustment of said valveA stem, substantially as described.
6.
