ROD 0R WELL-CASING ELEVATOR.
Application led December 2, 1921. Serial No. 519,498.
This invention has reference to lrod or well-casing elevators for use-in connection with deep wells and its object is to provide means whereby the structure may be readily adapted for either sucker-rods or well casings, requiring but a minimum change to adapt it to either purpose.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a holder with a rotatable member, both the holder and rotatable member having entering slots arranged to match each other, with the rotatable member swivelled axially of and to the holder and interlocked therewith against longitudinal movementso that the slots may be moved with relation to each other, so as to cross, and the two relatively rotatable members are so connected that they may be locked in chosen angular relation to each other to receive and hold a latch capable of locking the holding and rotatable members together and thereby prevent movement of the rotatable member about its axis of rotation sufiiciently to permit the escape of the coupling usually employed to connect the adjacent ends of the sucker rod or of the well casing. In ,this manner, when it is desired to withdraw the sucker rod or well casing, the elevating structure. is connected and locked to lthe upper end of the suckerrod or well casing vand then, by the employment of suitable apparatus, the rod or casing is withdrawn from the well without danger to the workmen.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detaileddescription taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the understanding,
however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modilications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as ex pressed in the appended claims.'
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is an elevation of the-elevating tool 1n position to engage a suckerrod or a Well caing; 1

1g. 4.- is a longitudinal section at right angles to the showing of Fig. 2; v
F1g. 5 1s an elevation of the structure as viewed from the rlght hand side of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 1s a plan view, partly in horizontal secdtign of the structure shown in Figs. 4 an Referring to the drawings, there yisv mcomplete, cylmdrical or sleeve-` llke holder 1, having trunnions 2, and at shown an diametrically opposite sides receivin `e es 3 of a link or bail 4, the eyes 3 bei-ngl suiii ciently spread apart to be entered and traversed by the trunnions 2.; Any approprlate means may be employed to hold the Imke on trunmons 2, as, for instance, cot- Ater or other pins 5. i
The holder 1 is' formed with a radial Slot' or recess 6, entering the holderA from one side and the trunnions 2 are located about midway of the length of the holder or body member l, the recess 6 is of a width to rcelve a coupllng 7 screwed onto one end of a sucker rod 8, or other element, suchas a length of casing, to be elevated or withdrawn from the well.
.It is customa1'y to form the coupling 7 with dlametrically opposite depressions 9 `for the application of a wrench, by means of which the sleeve lor coupling 7 may be manipulated in joining the sucker rod or casing elements together. The coupling 7 turns about its -longitudinal axis in the recess 6.
.Swivelled to one end of the body member 1'1s a ring-shaped member 10 which may, in the main, be concentric with the body mem- -ber, and is provided on one side with a finger or tongue 11 in the path of which is anbut isnarrower than the slot 6 and correso v in to matching relation to each other in such spends to the spacing of the'sides of' therecess 18 so that if the slots 6 and 13 coincide,
9, may be slipped into the matching slots to one side of the holder .1, and then by turn ing the ring axially .the coupling 7w1th the rod 8, or a well casing when present, is
gether for relative rotation without escape 15, which' in .conjunction with the dove-v anchored or locked in the holder 1 and supported axially therein. J
In order to connect the ring 10 to the upper end ofthe body member 1, the latte 1` is vprovided with an undercut or .dove-talled tongue 14, and the ring 10 has a dove-tailedv or undercut channel 14a into which' the dovetailf14 fits, thereby holding the parts toone from the other, and also permitting. the vassemblage of parts without diiculty, for the ring 10 may be conveniently formed of two similar parts united by a bolt or rlvet tailed part holds the divided'ring in swiveled relation to the body member, 1J-To facilitate ofthe turning of the ring 10, and
the parts carried thereby, the body member- 1 is finished onl one Iside with a radial handle- 16,'by means of which the body member 1 may be turned about its longitudinal axis so that the slots 6 and 13 may be brought manner as to cross and thereby lock the cou- -pling 7 ,v orV other similar part, against escape.
' vided. onl the body member 1, beneath the In order to accomplish this, there are prohandl'el, two adjacent ears 17 and 18, be.-
I tween which is hinged athumb latch 19,.the
. latch 19 is a slidable bolt 20," ided ina slot or recess 21 in the body mem er 1 out of the` ear17 being longer than the ear 18 and lreachingfrom the ring 10 to the handle 16 for the purpose of strength. Pivoted to the path of the bolt 2() butv movable into the path thereof so as to' engage one side of the recess 13, andvthus prevent turning 'of the ring 10. The latch19'is'constrained by a spring 22 4to normally move into the .path of the ring 10. i -In order to attach the elevator to the sucker rod 8, 'or to the well casing or tubing,
-the slots 6 and 13'are set in alinement'so Vas to receive .the coupling 7 from one side-of the body member lfand ring 10 by way of' the recesses 9 lon opposite sides of vthe'coupling, whereupon by an appropriate rotation Y of the ring 10, the coupling 7 becomes'locked in. place and 'with suitable tackle (not shown) attached to the elevator, the rod 8 or the well casing', or whatever is being acted .A upon, is made fast against liability of escape and may be withdrawn from the well or serted thereunto as desired.
