TIRE VALVE.
Application filed January 24, 1922. Serial No. 531,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. PESAVANTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to valves for inner tubes of pneumatic tires, and has to do more particularly with means of repairing such valves, and more especially the stem thereof, when the same becomes broken. Valve stems as now commonly used consist of a stem proper having an extended flange at the lower end thereof by which anchorage with the inner tube is made, the stem being externally threaded and provided at its upper or outer end with a reduced portion which is likewise externally threaded. In the handling of tires, and particularly those of the heavier type, the upper reduced portion is frequently broken off, thereby destroying the valve and necessitating the demounting of the tire, the withdrawal of the inner tube and substitution of a new tube with a perfect valve stem thereon.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Fig. 1 shows a portion of a valve stem, and the cap which is screwed thereon, these being of the usual type;
Fig. 2 the upper end of a valve stem with the head broken off;
Fig. 3 a sectional elevation of a stem from which the broken head has been removed and a substitute head placed thereon; and
Fig. 4 a sectional elevation of such head.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a supplemental or substitute head, which, when the broken portion of an ordinary head upon the valve stem is re moved, may be substituted therefor and the valve mechanism proper mounted and held in place so that it will function the same as it would with the usual stem as it is placed upon the market.
In the drawings 1 denotes the usual valve stem having at its lower end a flanged member 2 adapted to be secured to the inner tube, and 3 the head extending from the upper end of the stem and being externally threaded to .receive the usual cap 4. The wall of the head 3 is materially lighter than the wall of the main body 1 of the stem,
and this head is sometimes broken off, as above indicated, by careless handling of the tire, either in the placement of the tire upon the rim or the withdrawal thereof.
Where the head is broken, as in Fig. 2, one need not under my invention withdraw the tube from the casing, but may file off i the projecting portion of the head substantially flush with the shouldered portion 5 which is at the juncture of the head and the upper portion of the main body of the. stem. This produces a flat surface in line with the shoulder 5, and with the valve plunger or valve insides removed, I screw on to the upper end of the valve stem thus modified, an adapter, of the form shown inFigs. 3 and l. Said adapter comprises an internally threaded hell or cylindrical member 6 which may be screwed down upon the upper end of the stem, making a tight joint therewith through the interpositioning of a washer or packing 7. A head 8, of the same size and dimension of the head originally forming an integral part of the stem, extends upwardly from the bell member 6, said head being externally threaded so as to receive the cap 4, and being likewise internally threaded to receive the valve insides, denoted generally by 9. Said valve insides are, as under the normal formation of the structure, adjustable to bring about a tight seating of the closing elements thereof. It is also conceivable that the washer or packing mem ber 7 may be omitted, but if the repair is made upon the road the packing would probably be essential, as it would probably be impossible to get a proper fit between the upper end of the stem and the inner face of the bell shape adapter.
The external face of the adapter may be made of any convenient contour to assist in screwing it in place and, in the form shown, it is disclosed as having fiat faces 10 adapted to receive a wrench.
What is claimed,-
1. In combination with a valve stem having a threaded exterior; an element screwed thereon and provided with an upwardly extending head, said head likewise being exteriorly threaded and formed with a thread upon its interior; and valve insides, the valve portion proper of said insides functioning with the interior ortion of the stem and the retaining morn ier thereof interiorly; and valve insides mounted in the stem and head, the valve portion proper of said insides functioning with the interior of the valve stem and the retaining member thereof being engaged with the interior thread formed upon the head.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ALBERT F. PESAVANTO.
