PNEUMATIC r'ooL.
Original application ifiled November 3, 1910, Serial December 11, 1911.
To all whom it mag concern: Be it known that we, HEN-RY Er Ln ,iiENDRE and GEORGE LrnoH, citizens of the and useful Improvements in Pneumatic lools, of which the following 1s a speclfica- 'tion.
This invention relates to a" closure or locking-means for the ends of the casings of pneumatic tools, and aims'to provide oer:
tain improvements therein.
It further relates to Improvements 111 the general structure of such tools at the inlet end.
Pneumatic tools are ordinarily subjected to a great amount and degree of vibration and it has been difficult to obtain a means for closing the end of the tool casin which will not be loosened under such vi nation. The present invention is designed to overcome the foregoing objection, and provides a closure which may not only be malntained fixed in the casing under vibration, but upon which the force of vibration acts to increase its fixity. The closure also acts as a means for holding securely in place certain parts of the tool at the inlet end.
The present application is a division of our earlier application S. No. 590,493, filed November 3, 1910.
An embodiment of the invention is described in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the end portion of a pneumatiotool, showing the end-closure in place. Fig. 2 1s a view in elevation of a part of the end 2110- partly in elevation another part of the the part shown in 4 a vertical-secand partly in section of end closure, fittedupon the preceding view. which may also have a cylindrical chamber A therein in which avalve box or the like C may be contained. The valve box C has a valve-proper c therein and may be closed by a cap 0 fitting within a recess 0 on the n Ber face of the valve-box.
and E indicate respectively, parts of the end-closing means,'D a plug or cap for closing the end of the casing and E a nut 'for locking 'said plug'in'place. The plug D has a base portion cl and a conical or tapermglproject-ion or extension (2, preferably ending in a squared end 11*, by which plug may be engaged by' a wrench. The base portion (Z isnlso preferably provided with threads d on its periphery by which it may engage threadsa' upon the interior of the end of the casing A. .The lower face of the plug-may be recessed, as indicated at and trued so that it may fit tightly against the part which it engages, such as the cap on the upper face of the valve and prevent escape of motive-fluid. The plug thus not only acts as a closure for the end of the casing but also serves to hold the interior parts in place. -Theplug has a passage (l lon itudinally the'rethrough, for admission of air to the tool, and is formed with interior screw-threads by which the end of a supply pipe is connected' Nut E is of cylindrical form and has a tapered bore a therein of approximately the same size as the tapered-extension (Z of the plug D upon which extension th'nutis adapted to fit.

gaging the threads a of the casing. -The nut is also preferably split, as at e, and is preferably. provided with squared faces 0 whereby it may be engaged by, a wrench.
The plug D is first inserted in the end of the casing'in contact with the cap on the valve-box, or other part against which it bears. The nut E is then placed over the plug and screwed down upon the plug. As the nut is'screweddown upon the plug it is expanded by the tapered extension thereof and its threads are thus wedged or expanded tightly into engagement with the thread on =the casing. The .plug is thus held seupon said eap..
