UNITED STATES 1,436,503 PATENT GFFlQE.
JOHN G. HUGHES, OF LONGVIEW, TEXAS.
EXHIBITOR.
Application filed April 28, 1920.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JUHN (I. llnorrns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Longview, in the county of Gregg and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Exhibitors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide an exhibitor specially designed for projecting signs of an attractive or display charactor for advertising purposes upon surfaces falling readily within the line of vision of possible observers, as upon the side walk in front of a store or place of business or upon the wall or fence or the side of a building or the like, and particularly to provide a device for this purpose wherein the display or advertising matter may readily be changed or diversified and especially to provide an advertising medium of this type which can be manufactured and maintained at a relatively small cost, and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts, of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, is a side View of an apparatus embodying the invention disposed in a position suitable for projecting an illuminated sign downwardly upon the side walk or like substantially horizontal surface.
Figure 2, is a sectional view partly broken away and enlarged, of the same.
Figures 3, t, 5 and 6 are cross sectional views respectively on the planes indicated by the lines -3, 4-4, 55 and. 6-6 of Figure 1.
The apparatus embodies essentially a casing 10 of substantially tubular form carrying at one end an object glass 11, consisting for example of a focusing lens, at the oppo site end a lighting unit such as a globe 12, and at an intermediate point a plate holder 13 through which the rays from the lighting unit are projected, and preferably double condensing lenses let interposed between the slide or plate holder and the focusing lens, and in order to provide for the variation of distance between the lighting unit and the slide holder and focusing lens, the casing is preferably made of extensible or telescopic construction to include the adjustable element 1O slidingly mounted upon the main section of the tube and slotted as at 15 for engagement by a set screw 16 or the equivalent thereof to lock the parts with the focusing Serial No. 377,208,
lens at the desired adjustment to suit the distance through which the sign or display is to be projected to a surface such as the side walk or a wall upon which the sign or picture is to appear.
The slide holder is disposed in a transverse plane with relation to the axis or longitudinal center of the casing and consists of an inwardly grooved guide in the form of a rec tangular frame of which the corners or angles 13 are fitted into openings 13 formed in the wall of the casing and the plates of suitable transparency as indicated at 17, are adapted to be inserted into the holder through the exposed open end of the latter, from the side of the casing so as to be interchangeable at the option of the operator or of the proprietor article which is being advertised by means of the apparatus.
The oppositely disposed plane-convex members 14: and. 14 of the condensing lens may be fitted at their peripheries in an annu lar seat 18 secured in any suitable manner within the casing as by screws 19 or the equivalent thereof between the planes of the plate holder and the focusing lens. Provision for the adjustment of said lens may be made by longitudinally slotting the wall of the casing for the reception of set screws as indicated at 20.
Near the upper or inner end of the casing. there is preferably provided a transverse tubular extension 21 for the reception of the stern of the lighting globe with a bayonet slot 22 for engagement by the switch key 23 carried by the socket 24 on the end of the electrical conductor 25 by which the lighting circuit of the building in which the apparatus is used, may be connected with the lighting unit in the casing, and arranged in the casing in a position diametrically opposite to the casing extension 21 there is provided a seat 26 for the reception of the end of the lighting globe so as to maintain the latter in a fixed position to utilize to the best advantage the illuminating power there- Vents such as perforations 27 may also be provided in the upper or inner end of the casing.
It will be obvious that the casing may be arranged in either a vertical or substantially horizontal position as for example in a show window of a store or the like to project the icture or lettering or other advertising matter upon the pavement or foot way in front or place of business, or it may in ii horizontal position to proor other information of the store he arranged ject :1 i'lvertising matter upon a vertical Wall or surface located. either inside or outside of the store or place of business and owing to the concentration of the light and the conditions under which the sign is projected as above described, the some may be employed in daylight :is well as at night, and. even on a moderately bright day it will be found that the sign will be projected with sutiicient intensity to be readily perceptible to the casual observer.
The invention hi1 ring been described, what is claimed :is new and useful is 1. An exhibitor having a casing provided at opposite ends with lighting and focusing units and at intermediate points with a plate or sign carrying medium and a condensing lens. said casing being provided in the plane of the lighting unit with a transverse tubular extension having a terminal bayonet slot and the ligl'iting unit consisting of an incandescent globe having a neck portion for occupying said extension and a socket with its switch key in engagement with said bayonet slot.
2. An exhibitor having a casing provided at opposite ends with lighting and focusing units and at intermediate points with a plate or sign carrying medium and a condensing lens, said casing being provided in the plane of the lighting unit vith a transverse tubular extension having a terminal bayonet slot and the lighting unit consisting of an incandescent globe having a neck portion for occupying said extension and a socket with its switch key in engagement with said bayonet slot, and the casing being provided in axial alignment with the light globe with a seat for the reception of the tip or nib of the globe.
In testimonv U whereof he affixes his signature.
