Fig. 6 is anelevation showing a plurality of the receptacles nested. As shown in the drawing a trunco-conical shaped receptacle 1 is provided with a triple-enforced rim at its top, formed of a continuation of the stock of the side wall, which is moulded to form a flange, or shoulder 2, the under surface of which is nearly perpendicular to the side wall, a cylindrical outer rim portion 3, which is nearly perpendicular to said flange, and is of uniform diameter, an inner rim portion 4, which is connected to said outer portion 3, by an intermediate portion 5 and extends reversely portion with its inner surface extending continuously with the inner sur face of the side wall and at the same taper, and a terminal portion 6 which lies between the portions 3 and 4 and abuts against the connecting portion 5. The portions 3, at and 6, thus folded and arranged, are pressed against each other, and against the flange or shoulder 2, under a very high pressure so that they form a solid, practically integral mass.
The relative distance between the shoulder 2 and the bottom surface of the joint, which forms the bottom of the receptacle with its side wall, and between the edge of the rim and the inner surface of the bottom is such that, when two or more of said receptacles are nested, as shown in Fig. 6, the surface of the shoulder 2 or" one will engage the rim portion 5 of another just before the bottoms of the receptacles come in contact.
A disk-shaped closure of stiff paper is provided, which is moulded to form a circular middle portion 7, which is dished or slightly concave in its upper side, and an edge portion, which is formed by embossing the material, so that it extends at nearly! right angles to the middle portion, at the inner side thereof, and then semi-circularly outward, and upward, forming an annular groove or recess 8, which encircles the middle portion 7. The up-turned side of the semicircularly curved recess 8 is extended tangentially to the end of the curved portion and then semi-circularly to form an annular recess which conforms to the exterior of the rim of the receptacle and comprises an inner portion 9, which is coincident with the outer side of the recess 8, a curved connecting portion 10 and a terminal portion 11, so that, when the closure is placed in position on the container, the inner surface of the portion 9 and 10 will seat against the inner and edge surfaces of the rim, and the portion 11 will fit telescopically on the outer surface thereof, thereby providing a tight connection be- .tween the closure and receptacle thruout the length of the flange of the closure.
The length of the terminal portion 11 is such that, when the closure is placed in this position on the receptacle, it will extend to a substantial extent beyond the shoulder 2, or under side of the rim of the container, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the extreme edge portion thereof may be bent beneath said rim, as shown in Fig. 1, to form a retaining lip 12 for securing the closure against accidental removal.
' The length of the terminal portion 11 in proportion to the width of the rib from top and bottom may be varied according to the degree of security with which it is desired to connect the closure, and, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, it may be such that the retaining 1p 12 will extend to the surface of the side wall.
The edge ortion of the terminal, 11 may be bent in y spinning, or in other ways, but this operation is preferably performed by providing a ring, as it, having anopening therein, the sides of which taper to a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the cup at the shoulder 2, so that, after the closure has been placed in position on the receptacle, the latter may be passed thru the ring w, causing its edge portion to be enaged by the inclined surface of the ring.
y pressing the closure downward, its edge portion will then be turned inward and, pressed against the shoulder 2, as shown in The fianging in of theterminal portion 11 may thus be rapidly performed, and when the lip has thus been turned in and pressed against the shoulder 2 the closure will .be securely held against removal during shipment, but the connection is such that, when is is desired to remove the cl0sure,-it may be moved circularly on the receptacle and pulled outwardly causing the lip to be turned out again, so that the closure may be easily freed therefrom.
Important advantages are secured by forming the rim of the receptacle so that its exterior surface is cylindrical and its interior is conical, and by forming the closure correspondingly, as this construction provides a tight engagement between the terminal portion of the closure and the exterior of the rim thruout the width of the latter, so that the possibility of leakage therebetween is greatly reduced, also the tapered interior surface of the rib enables the closure to be more readily started onto the receptacle than if this surface were parallel to the exterior surface and enables the closure to be firmly wedged against its seat on the receptacle, so that, when in position, the joint therebetween will be tightly sealed.
By moulding the closure in the particular shape shown, the shape will be retained indefinitely, as the fibers will be permanently set, and strains tending to distort the closure will be distributed in a manner to prevent excessive bending at any one point. By forming the middle portion in dished or concave-convex form, so that no portion of the closure is fiat, all portions being formed on a curved or at an inclination to the adjacent portion, tendency to become warped, or distorted by moisture, or other outside influences, is effectively counter-acted.
I claim 1. A paper receptacle having a re-enforced rim, formed of a continuation of the stock of the side wall extended transversely outward to provide an external shoulder,
then longitudinally and reversely to form a series of folded portions extending from the, shoulder and pressed together and against said shoulder in a solid mass, with the inner surface thereof extending uninterruptedly with the inner surface of the side wall, and a closure consisting of a paper disk having its edge portion outwardly embossed with relation to its middle portion to provide a recess adapted to receive said rim and closely engage the inner and outer sides and top edge thereof, the outer'side of said recess being arranged to extend beyond said shoulder and to be inwardly flanged to engage the same and lock the closure on the rim.'
2. A conically shaped paper receptacle having a reenforced rim formed of a continuation of the stock of the side wall reversely folded and pressed together in a solid mass having a tapering interior surface extending continuously with the inner surface of the side wall and a cylindrical exterior surface, in combination with a disk shaped paper closure having its edge portion embossed outwardly from its middle portion to provide an annular recess the outer side of which is adapted to telescopically fit the exterior of said rim and the inner side to seat wedgingly against the inner side of the rim when the bottom of the recess is engaged with the edge of the rim, and a lip on the edge portion of said outer side of said recess adaptedto be engaged with said shoulder when the rim is seated in the recess.
' 3. A cylindrically shaped paper receptacle having a re-enforced rim formed from a continuation of the stock thereof to provide a transversely extending portion, forming an external shoulder and a series of reversely folded portions extending from said shoulder, in parallelism with the sidewall, with the innermost fold lying in uninterrupted conformity with the interior surface ofthe side wall, said shoulder and folded portions being pressed together to form a solid mass and a disk-shaped closure comprising a circular middle portion having an annular groove at its periphery and extended in continuation with the outer side of said groove to engage the interior surface of said rim and then reversely, to engage its top edge and outer side, and having a bendable edge portion adapted to be yieldingly engaged with said shoulder.
