HOISTING DRUM.
Application led March 8, 1920, Serial No. 364,105. Renewed October 4, 1922. Serial No. 592,391.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, PHILIP BARNEY, of the town of Dollard, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Drums, of which the followin is the specification.
The invention re ates to improvements in hoisting drums and the object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, easily operated, inexpensive and durable hoisting drum for general work and particularly useful for a farmer, a special feature of the construction residing in the arrangement which permits of the slack in the hoisting cable being taken up prior to the hoisting operation being carried on, thereby preventing considerable wear and tear on the cable and also enabling the actual lifting operation to be carried on under more favorable conditions.
With the above objects in view the invention consists essentially in a hollow rotatably mounted winding drum, hand operated means for manipulating the drum and an auxiliary drum associated with the -main drum, the parts being arranged and constructed as hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the hoisting drum.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the drum.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the auxiliary drum.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
1 and 2 represent side members such as the legs of a derrick and between which my device is mounted. 3 and 4 are a pair of opposing side bars located on the inner side of the beams and held permanently in position by cross bolts 5 and 6 extending across between the bars and through the ends of the bars and fitted with spacing sleeves 7 and 8 located between the bars. The bolts are supplied with nuts 9 and 10 so that upon the nuts being tightened up the side bars are held fast. The side bars, bolts and spacing sleeves really form a frame for carrying the drum. V
11 represents themain drum which is provided at one end with a comparatively large gear wheel 12 and at the other end with a flange 13 between which the cable 14 is wound. The ends of the drum are rotatably mounted in the side bars and the centre of the drum is hollow from end to end as indicated at 15.
16 represents an operating shaft rotatably mounted in the side bars and having one end extending through the beam 1 and provided with a hand crank 17. 18 is a pinion or small gear wheel secured to the shaft 16 and meshing continuously with the gear wheel 12.
19 represents a short pipe extending through the beam 2 and having the inner end screw threaded into or otherwise secured to the end of the drum and the outer end tted with an auxiliary drum 20 which is actually formed from side discs 21 and 22 connected by suitably spaced cross rods 28. This drum is adapted to rotate with the main drum and actually the end of the cable is attached to the drums by rst threading the end thereof through an opening 24 in the main drum and out through the tube 19.
When the appliance is to be used the slack in the cable is initially pulled up and wound around the auxiliary drum, the end of the cable being finally anchored by passing it through a hole provided at 25 in the disc 22. After the slack has been so taken up the attendant turns the crank and eects the winding of the cable on the drum 11 and the lifting or lowering of the load in the ordinary way.
It will here be apparent that by pro-viding the auxiliary drum which turns with the main drum I save a good deal of time in the winding operation as well as make it easier to lift the load in a great many instances.
To understand this it is explained that usually the slack in the cable is wound on the main drum, this occurring before the load is actually raised. If there is considerable slack cable to be wound up it takes time and besides when one comes to raise the load the work is heavier than it should be for the reason that the load is probably being elevated when the cable is on the second or third course around the drum. Further, the winding of an outer course of cable on an inner course when the load is being raised is very hard on the cable, wearing it out much quicker than if it were winding entirely on the drum.
Reverting now to my structure I may say that l have found for general farm purposes. that the ordinary load can he raised by one course oLt cable on the drum with the result that if one initially draws tlie cable through and Winds the slack on the auxiliary drum and then starts to Work to lift the load he will ind that the load can be elevated easier and quicker and the l-ile .of the cable materially increased.
lWhat I claim as my invention is l. A cable Winding` mechanism comprising a pair ot' winding drums each hai/ingl a hollow axial portion communicating With the cable Winding space, and a hollow con duit connecting` said drums and alined With the hollow axial portions thereof.
in arrangement according to. claim l in which one of said drums comprises a pair ot end plates one of which is supported by the hollowT conduit, and a plurality of spaced connecting rods extending between said `plates.
The combination with a cable winding mechanism, as recited in claim l, of a supporting structure through which said holloW conduit extends.
4. The combination with a Winding mechanism, as recited in claim l, of a frame in Which one of said drums isjourna-lled and a supporting structure for said frame through which said hollow conduitextends.
Signed at llinnipeg, this 20, day of Fehruary, 1920.
PHILIP BARNEY.
