TUMBLER LOCK.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD REIOHARD, a German subject, residing at Frankfort-onthe-Main, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tumbler Looks (for which application for patent has been filed in Germany September 28, 1916), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to what are generally known as. pin locks or tumbler locks kind in which a number of partly known arrangements are used in a combination such as to result in a lock which is distinguished from the known locks by a series of advantages materially increasing its utility and'giving that full security against unauthorized opening which has hitherto not been attained. p
In the tumbler looks at present known the bolt is usually heldin its locking position by means of spring action or is brought into thisposition by spring action; such locks therefore are snap locks in which a key is inserted only for the unlocking, but not for itslocking. Where in the known arrangements a push key is used also for effecting a locking movement the guide for the bolt is not rectilinear or prismatic but for the release of the bolt-tumblers a tilting of the bolt is necessary whereby however, the se curity' of the lock is impaired. Push key locks in which both the bolt is prismatieally guided and the reverse movement of the bolt is attained by the insertion of the key,
.are at present not known, and ityis in this combination which is essential for the safety of the lock that the novel features of the present invention are embodied.
- Only by the coincidence of both the above characteristics does a: lock of this type actually oifer increased safety against unauthorized opening.
The invention extends moreover, to a novel arrangement of the tumblers hr detents whereby the bolt is locked repeatedly but differently in succession, which again increases the security of the lock.
The arrangement of the tumblers one behind the other in the direction of the bolt movement is not novel per se. Up till now, however, this arrangement has been such as to cause the tumblers to be released by rectilinear guide tongues of the key, whereby According to the present invention the release of the tumblers is attained by the operation of wave-shaped guide tongues arranged on the key parallel to the direction of its insertion. p
In order to render this multiple action of the tumblers possible the key is provided with a wedge-shaped bit with spaced recesses the edges of which are parallel with the direction of insertion. and consists in providing a lock of this an auxiliary bolt is arranged acting by leverage on the locking bolt.
In rotation locks auxiliary bolts are already used but in push key locks the application of the leverage enables the wedge of the bit to be made narrower while maintaining a relatively large bolt movement.

In Figure l a designates the bolt, adapted to be displaced by the wedge-shaped front edge on the bit (Z of the key 0 (Fig. 2) which is inserted at 7 after the tumblers Z) have been released by means of the wave-shaped guide tongues e on the key 0.
In this action the wave-shaped faces a operate in such a manner that the tumblers arranged one behind the other, in'the direction of the bolt movement are intermittently released.
If further tumblers are to be added the number of the wave-shaped tongues 6 must of course be increased accordingly.
The noses b on the tumblers engage into the ward notches g in such a manner that an absolutely correct shape of the release tongues e is necessary in order to release the bolt according to its continued movement.
The front edge of the key bit does not rise uniformly but as shown on the left in Figure 2 is made waved in several places parallel with the direction of insertion of the key. This arrangement is for the purpose of causing one interruption in the movement of the bolt for each repeated release of the tumblers, which are held in an upward direction by the springs 72.
To obtain reversed movement of the bolt, the key is inserted by inversion about 180; In order to attain a large bolt movement with a relatively narrow wedge of the bit, use may be made of an auxiliary bolt 2' as shown in Fig. 3. This bolt itransmits its motion imparted to it by the key on the latters insertion at f, to the bolt a by means of a lever 72. which has arms of difierent len'ths.
'Ihe main bolt movement therefore according to the proportion of the unequal length of the arms will be larger than the movement of the auxiliary bolt which latter is determined by the width of the key bit.
In the arrangement according to Figure 4; the lever h is jour'nalled in the stationary part Z of the lock and the bolt movement takes place in the same direction as the movement of the auxiliary bolt 2'.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a tumbler lock in combination, a bolt constrained'to have longitudinal movement and provided with ward notches and a tumbler for engaging saidnotches successively and intermittently during the insertion of a key transversely of said bolt.
2. In a'tumbler look, a bolt constrained to move longitudinally and provided with ward notches, a tumbler and a key having a waved tumbler engaging face and a wave-d bolt operating face complementary to the tumbler engaging face to successively move said bolt between successive engagements of the tumbler with said notches.
3. In a tumbler lock, in combination, a bolt constrained to have longitudinal movement, tumblers, a tumblerengaging slot having a plurality of ward notches for each tumbler, and a key alternately operating said tumblers and bolt.
4:. In a tumbler lock in combination, a bolt constrained to have longitudinal move ment, tumblers movable transversely of the bolt and arranged to engage ward notches in said bolt, each tumbler arranged to engage successively a plurality of notches, and a key having a plurality of waved guide faces for operating said tumblers, and a wedge-shaped bit for operating said bolt.
5. In a tumbler lock in combination, a bolt" constrained to have longitudinal move ment, tumblers arranged one behind the other in the direction of movement of said bolt, a plurality of ward notches for each tumbler, a key having waved tongues for actuating the tumblers and a bit for actuating the bolt, said bit having steps for interrupting the movement of the bolt.
6. In a tumbler .lock in combination, a main bolt, an auxiliary bolt, lever meehanisin multiplying the movement of one bolt with respect to the other bolt, a tumbler, one of said bolts having a plurality of ward notches, and a key toperiodioally and alternately move said tumbler and bolt.
7. In a'tumbler look in; combination, a main bolt, an auxiliary bolt, lever mechanism between the bolts multiplying the movement of one bolt with respect to the other bolt, a plurality of tumblers arranged to move transversely of the bolt, a plurality of ward notches for each tumbler for one of the bolts and a key to periodically and alternately move the tumblers and one of said bolts to cause each tumbler to successi'vely engage its notches. 8. In a tumbler look, a casing, a main bolt constrained to move longitudinally into and out of the casing, an auxiliary bolt movable within the casing only, multiplying lever mechanism between the bolts, a plurality of spring-urged tumblers movable in a "direction substantially transversely of the main bolt, said main bolt having a plurality of ward notches for each tumbler, and a trans- .versely inserted key having a waved tongue for each tumbler and a wedge-shaped bit having a waved edge complementary to the tongues to intermittently and alternately move the tumblers and auxiliary bolt.
9. In a tumblerlock, a bolt constrained to move longitudinally and provided with horizontally spaced ward notches, tumblers cooperating therewith, a key movable trans versely of the bolt to operate said tumblers and bolt in alternation during the insertion of the key.
