State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Nailing Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved box nailin table and more particularly to the elevating means therefor. v It is well known that t6 reinforceboxes containing merchandise, and sometimes*u to bind two or more boxes together in one package, it is a common .practice to nail a wire, a metal strip, or tape around the ends of the box, or a plurality of boxes in one pile. While ordinary box making machines are adapted to nail the boxes together and can be used to nail thetape thereon, one of the difficulties not overcome heretofore was the factfthat such box making machines are adapted to operate onlyl on boxes of a uniform size, and irregularity in the heightof the box would cause the nails to be driven into the wood too far, or notfar enough. The object ofmy 1nvention is an improvement in a box making machine which will be automatically responsive vin adjustment to the height of the box being nailed, so that the elevating device for the boxes will be responsive to thel differences in height of the boxes, always raising them so that the upper surface of t'he box is at a predetermined height, and ad]a' cent tothe nail boxes of the machine.
To accomplish this object, and other objects hereinafter set forth, I have constructed a machine a description of which is set forth in the specification herein, and
illustrated on the accompanying drawing, in'
which Figure l is a-front partial view of thel machine. Figure 2 is a side View of the same portion of the machine as is shown in Figure 1. Figure 3 is a plan view of the hydraulic press and valves and pipes. Figure 4 shows a centrifugal pump which is one means that can be used for supplying hydraulic pressure. Figure 5 is a side view, partly in section, of the cradle for holding the boxes for nailing and turning, and shows the means for turmng the box around.
In said drawings 2 is the base on which the machine stands. 3 and 3a are two upright main posts attached to base 2. The faces 3aa on posts 3 and 3a are on a common plane and form vertical slideways. 7 is a. bracket having braces 7b and 7c and a top cular frames.

To rotate screw 8 I have attached a gear 8b thereon which is turned by an in- 70 termediate gear 8c, which receives its move- 'ment from a gear 8d to be turned by a crank 88. The purposeof the screw designated 8 1s to adjust the height of the bracket top 7a.

-Means for rotating the cradle consistJ of an auxiliary ring 11 of such diameter that it will easily rotate around the four tie rods 10, 10d, 10a and 10t when it is placed concentric with cradle rings I0a and 10". 11n is a handle extending radially therefrom. 11" is 10@ horizontal plane. In raising the handle 1ln 110 it will be noted that the dog will drag over one of the rods 10c, 10, 10, or lOf, and that 9 is a cradle holder, and consists 8@ 11d is a 105 by reversing the movement of the handle 11 the dog 11b will engage with one of the rods 10c, 10d, 10e or 10t and that 'the cradle will be turned on its axis, together with the contents of the cradle, which may be two boxes 13 and 13b as shown. 16 is the main support for a plurality of nail boxes 12b, 12, 12d and 12e. The nail boxes 12b, 12, 12d and 12e are placed in a horizontal line beyond the ends of the cradle and are adapted to be iadjusted so that the nail boxes will be on line with the ends of the box. In a separate application Serial No. 434,592, filed January 3, 1921, is disclosed one of the means which ma be used for feeding and driving the nai s into the box. The nail boxes 12", 12, 12d and 12 should be spaced far enough from bracket top 7a so that the boxes 13 and 13b when within the cradle can be turned around-in the space between said top and the nail boxes. 14 is a metal tape which is brought over a guide 14 into a path directly under the nail boxes and over the .ends of the box for the purpose of nailing it thereon.
It will be"noted that normally the top surface of the box 13, (when in cradle 10) is below the nail boxes. For the purpose of elevatin the box so that it is adjacent to said naiboxes and held rigidly in said position while being nailed, I have provided two auxiliary slideways 15 and 15b which are attached to base 2 and which extend in a vertical line which would intercept an extended axis of the cradlel and just beyond the two ends of the cradle. 15c and 15d are slides adapted to slide in slideways 15 and 15b. These slides extend through bracket top 7 and terminate at the top with cross supports 15e and 15. The cross supports 15 and 15t are in line with the bottom of the ends of the box 13b. 15g is a cross bar joining the slides 15c and 15d. These slides are operated by means of hydraulic pressure consisting of a cylinder 17, a piston therein 17, which is connected with crossbar 15g by means of piston stem 17M. 17c is a three- Way valve. 17d is a supply tank. 17e is a centrifugal pump whichdraws the liquid it pumps from supply tank 17d. 17I is a lead from pump 17e to the three-way valve and it also connects with lead 17dd to tank 17d, 17g
is a lead from the three-way valve to the discharge opening of pump 17e. 17h is a lead from the three-way valve to cylinder 17. 17j is the valve. 17k is a'rodattached to the valve plunger for operatingit. 17l is a springl rod 17 k. By this means it will be noted that boxes 13 and 13b can be inserted in the cradle, the hydraulic force can be turned on and the slides 15 and 15d will move upward lifting the box and the cradle to a level so that the top surface of the box will be pressed against the nail boxes and the check valve will hold the fluid in the cylinder 17 and hold the box rigid for nailing'. Then the nailing of the box on the uppermost side is completed, the valve is operated to release the hydraulic pressure, the cradle is turned one quarter around thus presenting another side uppermost, and the hydraulic pressure is again made operative to bring the box in position adjacent to the nail boxes and this is repeated until'the four sides of the box are in turn placed uppermost and adjacent to the nail boxes. By use of the hydraulic pressure for raising the boxes into position for nailing, the lack of uniformity in the height of the boxes is overcome as each face placed uppermost is pressed against the nail boxes by uniform hydraulic pressure.
The nailing device is described in a separate application above referred to.
Having described my invention I claim Letters Patent:
1. In a box making machine the combination of a box holder rotatable around ahorizontal axial line and positioned directly under a nail box, a vertical slidewa)1 in which the box holder -is adapted to slide, a table positioned directly under the box holder and vertically slidable within limits which permit the box holder to rotate, and permits the table to be moved adjacent to the box within the box holder in any position said box holder may be within the box holder slideway.
2. In a box making machine the combination of a box holder rotatable around a horizontal axial line and positioned directly under a nail box. stop means for locking the rotation thereof on each quarter turn, a vertical slideway adapted to receive the box holder for slidable movement therein, a table vertically slidable and positionc l directly under the box .holder and adapted for engagement therewith, and means for elevating and lowering said table, substantially as described.
. 3. A box nai-ling table consisting of a box holder rotatable around a horizontal axial line, rings surrounding the box holder and attached thereto having their centers registerin with said horizontal axial line, vertical slideways for the peripheries of the rings, means lfor rotating the box holder within the sildeways, and independent means for sliding the rings within the slideways, substantially as described.
4. In a box making machine having means for driving nails. a nail box, a box holder rotatable about a horizontal axial line positioned under the nail box, a vertical slideway for the box holder, means for raising the box holder so that the upper surface of thebox within the box holder will be ou the same plane as the under surface of the nail box consisting of a slideway and 'a slide therein terminating at the top with a platform arranged to come in contact with the under side of the box when the slide is moved upwards, means for moving said slide upwards consisting of a hydraulic cylinder, a piston within the cylinder, hydraulic pressure for moving the piston upwards, and a piston stem attached at one end to the piston and at the other to the side, and adapted to move the slide upward as the cylinder moves upward.
5. In a box making machine having means for driving nails, a nail box, a vbox holder rotatable about a horizontal axial line positioned under the nail box, a vertical slideway for the box holder, me ans for raising the box holder so that the upper surface ot the box within the box holder will be on the same plane as the under surface of the nail box consisting of a slideway and a slide therein terminating at the top with a platform arranged to come in contact with the under side of the box when the slide slide upwards consisting of a hydraulic cylinder, a piston within the cylinder, hydraulic pressure for moving the pistou upwards, a piston stem attached at one end to the piston and at the other to the side, and adapted to move the slide upward as the cylinder moves upward, and a check. valve adapted to hold the pressure against said slide until released by manual means, substantially as described.
6. In a box making machine having means for driving nails, a nail box, a cradle consisting of two circular rings attached together at four spaced points adjacent the peripheries of the rings, rectangular frames Vwithin said rings adapted to hold a box,
a support for said cradle constructed and arranged to permit the cradle to be rotated within the support and slid relative thereto, means for rotating the cradle in said support, means for sliding the cradle in said support consisting of a cylinder, a push rod connected with the cylinder and terminating at its other end in a support adapted to engage a box in the rectangular frames, means for raising the piston in the cylinder by hydraulic pressure, a check valve adapted vto hold the pressure in the cylinder and means for releasing the pressure in the cylinder.
