BATHING oar.
Application filed. June 8, 1921. Serial No. 475,945.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM EARL BUSH,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Fresno, Fresno County, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bathing Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object a bathing cap as a protection to the head and hair so constructed that it will fit snugly about the head without undue pressure and will at the same time efiectually prevent displacement by waves while bathing and therefore pre venting the wetting of the hair or head under the cap.
By referring to the accompanying drawingvmy invention will be made clear.
ig. 1 illustrates one form of my cap lyin flat.
ig. 2 illustrates a cross section of Fig. 1 on the line 11-11.
Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 show the manner of placing the cap over the head. I
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a variation wherein the two elastic bands merge together into a single band across the forehead portion of the cap.
Figs. 8 and 9 are front and back views of the cap of Fig. 7.
Throughout the figures similar numerals refer to identical parts.
The body of the cap is indicated by the numeral 1 which is composed of a thin rubher bag or covering for the head, in the form of a large cap, and is preferably made much thinner than indicated by my section drawing which section I have purposely exaggcrated to better indicate the lines of the material. The two sides of the sheet rubber are closed together along the seam 2, and the cap so formed is provided with an elastic edge strip 5 circling the open end of thecap in the usual manner-such that when the cap is slipped over the head band 5 snugly closes around the head and holds the cap as a protection entirely enclosing the hair. The cap as here set forth is Well lmown in the art and my invention consists in adding to the length of the cap a sufficient amount of sheet rubber 4 and a second elastic band as indicated at 3 whereby a barrier to any wave motion Bil or any water ingress is first provided by the band 5 so that the band 3 is not disturbed in its position by the wave motion. v Experience shows that a wave striking the head wearlng an ordinary bathing cap as heretofore made shifts the elastic band andthe wave beats its way thereunder so that water gets to the inside of the cap. With my invention the wave action can do no more than find ingress to the under side of the cap between the bands 3 and 5 and the band 3 is never subject to wave force and is in effect protected by the band 5, consequently at all tlmes it is held snugly against the head and water is entirely prevented from getting to the interior of the cap and in practice never going beyond the compartment 6 intermedi ate between the bands 3, 5.
In placing the cap over the head the excess formed by the additional material 4 is folded under and forms a second protective layer over the ear with the air cushion 8 therebetween. See Figs. 3, 5 and 7 The manner in which this cap is applied is shown in Fig. 4 where the band 5 is fitted around the head above the ears and thereafter the band 3 is pulled down from the head below the ears as shown in Fig. 3, thus bringing the material 1 of the cap down and over that portion shown at 4:, thus forming two thicknesses of sheet rubber with an air cushion therebetween as indicated by the numeral 8, thus effectually protecting the ears from the wave action and preventing the water from getting into the compartment containing the hair at 9.
Referring particularly to Figs. 7 to 9, there is shown a variation in the construction of the cap of my invention. The cap here shown is made full in the back portion of the head and the two elastic bands 9. 10, respectively, are separated by the sheet rubber material 11 which latter tapers toward the forehead from each side so that the two bands 9, 10, are in effect merged together over the forehead but separated in the back portion, and I desire to be understood as claiming all such variations.
1 claim:
1. A bathing cap of Waterproof material provided with an elastic band about its open end and a second elastic band in the body of the material and spaced from the first named band, said bands substantially of the same length and merging together through- 5 out a portion of their length as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A bathing cap of sheet rubber and having an elastic band substantially about the open end and a second hand spaced from the first named band, the said two bands 10 merging together over the forehead portion of the cap and spaced. apart on the back portion of the cap.
WILLIAM EARL BUSH.
