LENS-BLANK HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THnonoi-m B. Dnnscrn ER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lens- Blank Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
My present invention has for its object to provide a means for holding relatively small objects upon a support and, more particu larly, to provide a holder for lens blanks while being ground and polished and it consists in a simple clamping device which may be readily and quickly operated to secure the blank to and release it from its support. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements d combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of tie specification.

Figure 3 a horizontal sectional view on the line g g of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
The base portion of the object holder in dicated by 1 may be constructed of any suitable material, but in the present instance being adapted to hold a lens blank 2, is preferably of metal and is provided with two or more projections or object engaging members 3 on its upper side for engaging the edge of the object or blank and also with a supporting surface or rim 4-. The blank 2 is held in contact with the projections 3 and is centered by a third projection or lug 5 formed upon or attached. to a plate or slide 6 extending beneath the upper surface of'the holder and located in a slot or recess 7 if the holder is supported from the bottom as usual. The plate 6 extends some distance beneath the holder 1 and preferably across the center of rotation thereof, being curved around the center as at 8, and it is provided with a longitudinally sliding pin and slot connection with the holder at one end preferably that removed from the projection 5, and-with a laterally and longitudinally movable cam connection at the opposite end also formed by a pin and slot connection. In the present instance I provide the plate 6 with a relatively straight slot 9 at one end through which passes a stationary guide pin 10 and at the end nearest the projection 5 provide a cam slot 11 extending at an angle to the former and adapted to receive a stationary pin 12 on the holder. When the lens blank or other object is to be clamped to the holder it is-only necessary to place it against the projections 3, and move the projection 5 in the direction of the arrow in Figure 3 so that it will be carried laterally and also toward the projections 3 firmly holding the blank in position. By this arrangement permitting the longitudinal and lateral movement of the clamp and widely separating the pivotal and cam surfaces, the movable member is sufliciently held by the friction of the parts so that the holder may be rotated in either direction and the blank operated upon without liability of being loosened.
Holders such as shown have been in exten sive practical use and found to be admirably adapted for the purpose intended.
I claim as my invention:
1. An object holder comprising a base provided with a plurality of separated station ary members for engaging the object, a movable clamping member cooperating therewith, said movable member having sliding and pivoted connection with the base at one point and at a point removed therefrom, a cam connection serving to move the clamping member toward and between the stationary members when rotated on the pivot.
2. An object holder comprising a base provided with an object engaging member, a movable clamping member mounted thereon. having an object engaging projection op-- posing the first mentioned member, saidv clamping member having slot and pin connections with the base at separated points, one of said connections being relatively straight and the other arranged at an angle relatively thereto.
3. An object holder comprising a base provided with an object engaging member and a plate having at its outer portion an object engaging projection and adjacent thereto a cam slot and at apoint removed therefrom a straight slot extending transversely of the other and pins upon the base arranged in said slots.
4. A holder for lens blanks comprising a rotatable base provided with a plurality of blank engaging projections thereon, a plate movable on the base provided with a blank engaging projection and having a cam slot and pin connection with the base adjacent the blank engaging projection and also a straight slot and pin connection with the base extending at an angle to the first mentioned connection and located at a point removed from the former and on the opposite side of the centerof rot'a-tiono the holder.
5. The combination Wit-lithe base provided with object engaging projections thereon of a movable plate mounted thereon having an object engaging projection near one end and also having a laterally extending cam slot nearsaid projection and a straight slot extending at an angle to the cam slot and arranged at a point removed therefrom and stationary pins on the holder passing through and engaging the sides'of the slots in the plate;
