Be it known that I, HARRY C. SHAY, a citizen of theI United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful lm rovement in Box-Wiring achines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in box wiring apparatus and the object of my improvement 1s to provide apparatus that will facilitate the fastening of reinforcing Wires around packing boxes by making it easier to handle the boxes and easier to handle the wire tying machine by which wires are drawn tightly around the boxes and twisted or tied.
A more specific object is to provide a box supporting table having foot operated means for lifting and automatically turning a box through an angle of one-hundred and eighty degrees.
A further object is to provide means including a counterweight for supporting a wire tying machine in such a manner that it'may be quickly and easily manipulated. in wiring a boX, and to provide automatic means for lifting the wire tying machine clear of a box when the box is elevated and turned through one-half of one complete revolution.
4 Still further objects are to provide a box wiring apparatus that is stron and simple il'. construction, reliable and e cient in op eration, and not expensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view as will be apparent from the following description, the invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination ofparts as will be more clearly hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of box Wiring apparatus constructed in accordance with this invention, certain positions that various parts may assume being shown by broken lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of the front end of the table showing certain parts in a different operative position from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view substantially on broken line 5, 5 of Fig. 1, certain parts being shown in elevation and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view partly in cross section 1921. Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a table that is mounted on legs l1 that are braced and made rigid by cross braces 12.
rllhe forward end of the table is cut away to provid-e a recess 13 wherein is disposed a vertically movable turn table or platform 14 that is secured to a centrally arranged post '15. The recess 13 and platform 14 are shown circular but it will be understood that the same may be square or rectangular or of any other desired shape.
The post 15 is guided in suitable rigid guide brackets 19 and the bottom end of such post rests upon the inner end of a foot lever 16 that is fulcrumed as at 17 and has a foot piece 18 on its outer end so that when the outer end of the foot lever is depressed the post 15 and platform 14 will be elevated.
The post 15 and platform 14 are rotated in a clockwise direction each time they are elevated, by means of suitable mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel 20 that is keyed to the post 15 and is arranged to be engaged by a sprlng pressed pawl 21 on a gear segment 22 that is loosely mounted on the post 15. The gear segment 21 is oscillated through one half of one complete revolution at each upward movement of the post 15 by reason of its meshing with a rack 23 that is connected with the upper end of a bell crank lever 24. The bell crank lever 24 is fulcrumed on a bracket 25 that is carried on the post 15 and that ma also be made to form a guide 26 in whic the rack 23 ma reciprocate. The outer end of the bell crank lever 24 is disposed between upright guide members 27 and is arranged to engage fixedly mounted rollers or pins 28 and 29 disposed above and below the bell crank lever in such a manner as to oscillate the bell crank lever and move the rack 23 when the post 15 is raised or lowered. When the post 15 is lowered the rack 23 will rotate the gear segment 22 in a contra-clockwise direction and the pawl 21 will ride over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 22 without turning the ost. p The post 15 is provided at a'suitable point with two di-ametrically arranged outwardly protruding lugs 30 that are positioned so that they will engage with and strike against a fixed stop member 31 when raised and thereby prevent the post 15 and piatferm 14 from turning throu h more than one halt of one com lete revo ution.
The table 10y is provi ed with a lontudin-al slot 32 through which project bots 33 that serve to ad'ustabiy secure a block 34 to the table, the block 34 serving as a stop member against which the end of a box 35 may abut.
Secured te the rear end of the table midway between the two sides thereof and projecting above the top of such table is a vertical support 36 that has an arm 37 secured thereto by a hinge 38 at a point between the top of the table and the top of the upright support. The outer end of the arm 37 is hinged to the inner end of an arm 40 that has a wire tying machine 41 of well known construction pivotally secured to the outer end thereof in such a manner that the downward swinging movement of the wire tying machine with respect to the arm 40 is limited by the end of the arm 40 abutting against the side of the wire tying machine.
The arms 37 and 40 and the wire tying machine 41 are counterbalanced by a counterweight 42 on a cable 43 that passes upwardly over a pulley 44 on the upper end of the support 36 thence over a pulley 45 on the outer end of the arm 37 and is thence secured to an eyelet 46 on the inner end of the arm 40, the arrangement being such that the arms 37 and 40 will tend: to come to rest and remain in any position in which they happen to be when released by the operator as for instance they may be ralsed into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 to be temporarily out of the way while one box is being removed from, and another box is being placed on the table or they may be elevated into a substantially vertica posltion with the arm 37 against the upper end of the support 36 and the arm 40 hanging in a substantially vertical position alongside of the arm 37 and the support 36.
For the purpose of lifting the wire tying machine 41 asthe box is elevated in case such wire tying machine is not lifted clear of the box before the box is elevated l have provided a cable 47 that is secured toan upwardly projecting arm 48 on the foot lever 16 and thence passes toward the rear of the machine and under a pulley 50 and is secured to the lower end of the counter weight 42. This arrangement insures that the wire tying machine 41 will always be lifted clear of the box before the box begins to turn.
The space between the rollers 28 and 29 permits the -box 35 to be lifted clear of the block 34 before the lever arm 24 engages the roller 28 and begins to turn such box.

the post 15 is meente This is done by placing the box on the table 10 so that it rests on the movable platform 14 and the end of the box projects a short distance over the end of the table ae shown in Fig. 1, tying a wire 51 tightly around that end of the box by the use of the wire tying machine, then depreming the foot lever 16 to lift the box and turn it end for end so that the other end thereoi will project outwardly from the table and may be bound with a wire.
n wiring boxes a number of boxes of the same size will ordinarily be bound and if it is then desired to wire boxes of a dierent size the position of the block 34 may be adjusted to suit the diilerent size box.
The foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawingsclearly discloses the principles of construction and method of operation of my box wiring apparatus, but while l have illustrated and described what l now consider to be the preferred embodiment of the invention it will be understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the following claims.
What I claim is 1. Box wiring apparatus including a box supporting table having a recess near one edge thereof, a vertically movable turn table disposed within said recess., a foot pedal for raising and lowern said turn table, and means actuated by t e raising of said turn table for rotating the same through one-half of one complete revolution.
2. Box wirin 'apparatus including a box supporting tab e, a vertically movable turn table disposed within the limits of said box supporting table, a post supporting said turn table for rotation, with said post for elevating said turn talle above the plane of said box supporting table, means actuated by the lifting of said turn table for rotating said turn table through one-half of one complete revolution and stop means for arresting the rotation of said turn table.
3. Box wiring apparatus including a box supporting table having a recess near the front edge and having` a slot that extends rearwardly from said recess, a stop member adjustable lengthwise of said slot,` a verticall movable turn table positioned within sai recess and arranged to engage the bottom side of a box that may rest on said box supporting table over said recess, a post supporting said turn table for rotation, and a foot pedal connected with said post for elevating said turn table.
4. Box wiring apparatus includinga box supporting table, a turn table arranged to rise upwardly through said box supporting table, a post supporting said turn table, journal bearings for said post, a foot pedal for a foot pedal connected raising and lowering said post, a ratchet wheel secured to said post,-a gear segment loosely mounted on said post, a pawl on said gear segment and arranged to engage said ratchet wheel, a gear rack meshing with said gear segment, bracket means carried on said post for guiding said gear rack, a bell crank connected with one end of said gear rack, and fulcrumed on said bracket means and relatively fixed means for engaging one end of said bell crank tooscillate the same as said bell crank is raised and lowered by the vertical movement of said shaft.
5. Box wiring apparatus -comprising a supportin table, means for elevating a box above sai table and turning the same end for end, a wire tying machine, and counterbalancing means for supporting said wire tying machine above said table.
6. Box wiring apparatus including a box supporting table, a wire tying machine, and
means for supporting said wire tying machine in counterbalanced relation above said box supporting table. 7. Box wiring apparatus including a table, an upright support projecting above said table, jointed arms articulated with said upright support, a wire tying machine carried on the outer end of said jointed arms and means connected with said jointed arms for counterbalancing the Weight of said wire tyinmachine.

Box wiring apparatus comprising a box supportin table, a turn table disposed at one end o said box supporting table and arranged to be elevated above the plane thereof, a substantially horizontal foot lever :for raising and lowering said turn table, an upright support projecting above said box supporting table at the end opposite said turn table, jointed arms connected with said upright support, a wire tying machine carried on the outer end of said jointed arms, a pulley secured to the upper end of said upright support, a cable connected with said jointed arms and passing over said pulley, a counterweight secured to said cable, a pulley disposed below said counterweight, an upwardly projecting arm on said foot lever and another cable secured to said upwardly projecting arm and to said counterweight and passing under said last named pulley for lifting said wire tying machine when said turn table is lifted.
