Be it known that I, MILTON F. CHESHIRE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and Stateoii Illinois, have invented certain new and useful` Improvements in Attachments vfor Addressing Machines, of which the fol- :lowing is a' speciiication.
rMy invention relates to improvements in -Attachments for' Addressing Machines especially adapted and arranged for use in perforating such address strips as are used in conjunctionl with the addressing machine disclosed'in my prior application for patent, tiled November 29, 1920, Serial No. 427 ,039. The primary object of the present invention is to provide a simple and eflicient attachment for machines printing such strips or lists which is of simple construction, eiiicient in operation and capable ofperforating such strips as a continuation oi the process of printing the same.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements ot parts hereinafter described. and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification, and in which,

The preferred form oi construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a suitable frame 10 adapted and arranged to be secured to the rear or delivery end of an ordinary strip printing machine. The form of attachment illustrated is one operating in conjunction with a well known machine now upon the market and known as the Belknap 1921. Serial No. 479,063.
duplex listing machine. lIhe attachment is adapted and arranged to be secured immediately to the rear of the usual stencil guides 11 and -12 of such a machine adapted and arranged to guide the stencils 13 `and 14 in the usual manner. The'stencils 13 and 14 are the usual and ordinary stencils employed in said Belknap machine except that some of the'stencils 13 are provided with notches 15 in their edges. The stencils 13, it will be noted, do not contain a-complete address, including the name of a-subscriber to a paper or the like, but merely the name of a city, town or mailing route as shown, said stencils 13 being inserted in the body or run of stencils at the end of the sets of stencils therein constituting addresses in a certain city, town or mailing route and being marked with the name of said route.
`The Belknap machine, to which reference has been made, is arranged and adapted to Yapply the address and route names on` the stencils 13 to the under side of a strip 17 of paper which is fed through the machine in the usual way and delivered from the rear end thereof, said machine being'an old and well known machine for the purpose and requiring no further illustration or description here, Yit being suiiicient to state that said machine is such that by the use of stencilsv 13 and 14 a complete mailing or route list is applied to the under side of strip 17.
My attachment is attached to the rear of such a machine adjacent the rear guide 12 thereof andstencils 13 provided with notches 15 in their edges, said stencils 13 indicating the ends of the various sets or' addresses as above explained. A notch 16 is also provided in the rear stencil guide 12 adapted and arranged to register with the notches 15 as the stencils 13 pass across the strip 17 in said guide. As illustrated in Fig. 8 the strip 17 passing from said- Belknap machine contains the addresses on its under side as r23 .passes into the angle lbetween the finger the irregular perforations 21 corresponding with the route ldesignations between said sets ofladdresses.
To this end a strip guide 22 is arranged in the frame 10 to receive the strip 17 pass'- ing froms'aid Belknap machine. (lo-opere ating with the guide 22'=a're'-`two vertically reciprocating spring held punchV members 23 and 24 operable by `oscillatory levers '25 and 26 and adapted and arrangedto form said perforations, the punch 23 forming the oblong; perforations 21 adj acent one .side of strip.' 17 and the punch24- formingthey centralv circular perforations 2O in said"4 strip. The oscillations of'levers-25 andf26fare caused by a master shaft 34 carrying cam members 35 contacting withtheundersides of said levers7 a spring lever 36 being arranged across the tops of the said levers as shown to induce simultaneous operation thereof. The master shaft 34" is driven by means of a r sprocket 37 arranged to be connect'ed by a suitable sprocket chain withone ofthe shafts of thel said Belknap machine vxas'will be'rreadily understood. Shaftv34 carries a driving disc or plate 38 having a notch 39 in its` periphery and ycarrying a driving pin 40 adapted and arranged to engage the'no'tches 41 in a rose gear 42 fixed to a countershaft 43 of the attachment. A pivoted dog 44 is provided witha nose 45 .adapted to enter the notches 41, said nose ybeingprovided with bevelled ends .46 coyoperating with correspondingly bevelled. .corners47 of said notches. A spring 48 rests upon the dog 44 and normally ,presses the nose 45 into engagement with the .notches 41. At its other endthedog. 44 is provided with a lug 49 ridingjuponvthev pe ripheryof the discA 38 and adapted and ar- 45` is force-d from one of the :notches 41. The arrangement is such that upon each revolution of the shaft 34 the pin 40 engages one of the notches 41 and causes a partial revolution of shaft 43', the bevelled edges 47 of notches 41 forcing` the .pawl nose 45 l,outiof engagementtherewith to permit of such partial revolution. The roller 54 is provided with flanges 56and 57 holding the stripy 17 inv contact with the roller 50 without blurring of the printing thereon and providing a groove 58forftheaccommodation of the pins'52 as shown. A guide roller 64 is provided in brackets 61 to facilitate ldischarge of the strip 17. inter-meshing gears 65, 66 and 67 are provided on shafts 43, 55 and 60 respectively and whereby the rollers 54 and 59 will be positively operated at each operation of the roller 50 on shaft 43.
The arrangement is such that as each stencil 13 or 14 is fed across and below the path of the strip 17 it pauses momentarily under said strip, said strip also pausing, and during this pause each stencil is applied to the under side of the strip by the normal operation of said Belknap machine. Thereupon the strip 17 is drawn onto the roller 50 the exact length between two of the perforations 2O and a new Stencil is applied thereto as before, the punch 24 operating constantly and regularly to provide the regularly spaced perforations 2O between the imprints from the different stencils. Upon the next operation after the application of one of the notched stencils 13 to the strip 17 the punch Q3 is automaticallyy operated to provide a side perforation 21 to correspond with the imprint of said notched stencil. In this manner the strip 17 normally produced by said Belknap machine without perforation will be automatically provided with the perforations 2O and 21 so that said strip may be employed in the machine or attachment illustrated and described in my said co-pending application mentioned above.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :h

In a machine of the class described comprising strip perforating mechanism; a stencil guide arranged to guide stencils into operative relation with said strip for printing thereon; and means operable by said stencils for actuating said perforating mechanism to perforate said strip in operative relation with the printing applied by the actuating stencil, substantially as described.
2. A machine of the class described comprising strip perforating mechanism; a stencil guide in operative relation with said strip, said stencils being provided with notches in their edges; and means operable by said notches controlling said perforating mechanism, substantially as described.

A machine of the class described comprising strip feeding and perforating mechanism; a strip guide leading to said mechanism; a stencil guide crossing said strip guide; stencils Vfitting said stencil guide; and means ope 1able by stencils in said stencil guide controlling said perforating mechanism, substantially as described.
4. A machine of the class described comprising strip feeding and perforating mechanism; a strip guide leading to said mechanism; a stencil guide crossing said strip guide; stencils fitting said stencil guide and provided with notches in their edges; and
means operable by notches in stencils in said stencil guide controlling said perforating mechanism, substantially as described. n

A machine of the class described coniprising strip feeding and perforating mechanism; a strip guide leading to said mechanism; a stencil guide crossing' said strip guide, said stencil guide being provided with a notch giving access to the edges of the stencils therein; stencils tting said stencil guide and provided with notches in their edges registering with the notch in said guide; and means operating through the notch in the stencil guide and operable by notches in said stencils controlling said perforating mechanism, substantially as described.

A machine of the class described comprising strip feeding and perforating mechanism; a strip guide leading to said mechanism; a stencil guide crossing said strip guide, said stencil guide being provided with a notch giving access to the edges of the stencils therein; stencils litting said stencil guide and provided with notches in their edges registering with the notch in said guide; a trigger operating inthe notch in the stencil guide and arranged to enter the notches in the stencils; and means operable by entry of said trigger into said stencil notches controlling said perforating mechanism, substantially as described.

A machine of the class described comprising strip feeding mechanism; a constantly operating punch arranged to perforate said strip at regular intervals; an intermittently operating punch arranged to perforate said strip when operated; and means for operating said intermittent punch at irregular intervals, substantially as described.

A machine of the class described comprising strip feeding mechanism; a constantly operating punch arranged to perforate said strip centrally at regular intervals; an intermittently operating punch arranged to perforated said strip at one side when operated; and means for operating said intermittent punch at irregular intervals, substantially as described.

A machine of the class described coinprising strip feeding mechanism; a constantly operating punch arranged to perforate said strip at regular intervals; an interdit mittently operating punch arranged to perforate said strip when operated; a stencil holder in operative relation With said strip; and means operable by said stencils controlling saidv intermittent punch, substantially as described.

A machine oi' the class described comprising strip feeding mechanism; a constantly operating punch arranged to periorate said strip centrally at regular intervals; an intermittently operating punch arranged to perforate said strip at one side when operated; a stencil holder in operative relation with said strip, some of said stencils being provided with notches in their edges; and means operable by saidnotches controlling said intermittent punch, substantially as described.

A machine of the class described comprising strip feeding mechanism; a constantly operating punch arranged to perfor-ate said strip at regular intervals; an intermittently operating punch arranged to perliorate said strip When operated; a stencil holder in operative relation with said strip, some of said stencils being provided with notches in their edges; a spring held trigger with said'strip, some otsaid stencils'being vprovided with notches in their edges; a
spring held trigger arranged to -restupon the edges of said stencils and enter the notches-therein; and meansfoperable by entry of said trigger to said notches controlling` said intermittent punch, substantially as described.

A machine oi' the class describedcomprising strip Yfeeding rollers, one of said rollers being provided Lcentrally with projections adapted and arranged to enter and engage central constantly operating punch mechanism adapted and arranged to i'orm'said central perfor-ations in said strip as it passes to said feed rollers; intermittently operating punch mechanism arranged to provide per'- iorations in said strip When operated;` a stencil guide crossing the path'of said strip; stencils in said guide, some of said stencils havin g notches in their edges; a spring lheld trigger normally riding upon theedgesuo said stencils and adapted and arranged toenter said notches; and meansoperable by entry of said trigger in said notches controlling thev operation of said intermittent punch mechanism, substantially as described.
