DIT/IMER AND srsn ATTACHMENT- ron LAMPS.-
Application filed. July 27, 1922. Serial No. 577,929.
- To all whom it may concern: v Be it known that I, THOMAS M. ATKINSON,
a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dimmer and Sign Attachments for Lamps, of Which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to a combined dimmer and sign especially adapted for automobile headlights.
' The object of the invention is to provide a simple and readily applied dimmer and sign for the lights of automobiles and other vehicles in which that portion of the light out ofi? by thedimmer will be reflected to a transpicuous or translucent sign.
This object I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, in which: v
Fig. 1 is a front elevation 'of my combined dimmer and sign."
Fig. 2 is a vertical section online 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.
A vertically disposed oblong casing 1 is provided with a front opening having vertically disposed guideways' 2, 2 at the sides thereof and ahorizontal guide 3 across its lower side. The top 4 of the casing is provided at its forward edge with an opening 5 registering with the guideways 2, 2 and the sign plate 6 of any suitable material isinserted through this top opening 5 into the guideways, after which a suitable cover 7 is closed over the upper edge of the sign plate 6 and opening 5. This cover 7 is shown as provided with end extensions 8 which are pivoted to the sides of the casing so that the covermay be swung into and out of position. The cover 7 not only prevents rain and snow from entering, but acts also to hold the sign 6 down and prevent rattling. The sign 3 may bev of colored glass with the advertising matter produced thereon in contrasting color or it may be formed of any other suitable material. A number of these signs bearing different advertising matter may be provided with each attachment so that the owner may change them at intervals to advertise his various wares. The lower rear edge of the backof the casing 1 is provided with a semi-circular recess 10 and from the ends of this recess extend the attaching straps 11,12 having cars 13, 13 at their adj acent free ends connected by a bolt 14 or equiv alent adjusting means so thatthe casing may be applied to the various head orotherlights. I
The front side of the casing 1 is extended downwardly and inwardly, as at 15, so as to cover the upper portion of a headlight lens bring out the advertising matter clearly and.
prominently.
The casing 1 will preferabl be formed of sheet metal having the inner surface formed as areflector, but it may be of anysuitable,
material and have separate reflecting surfaces applied. The attachment may be applied to all sorts of signal lights such as are used on automobiles, motor boats, &c.
In order that the attachment may not scratch and mar the lamp to which it is to be attached and rattle, I prefer to line the recessed portion 10 and the straps, 11, 12 with felt 17 or other suitable material, held in place by flanges 18 or'i n any suitable manner'.
What I claim is: v 1. A combined dimmer and sign for lamps comprising a casing having an open lower end the rear wall ofr'which is cut away to receive a lamp and,the front wall opposite said cut-awayv portion of which is formed at its lower edge as a dimmer, and a sign in the front of the casing.
v2. A. combined dimmer and sign for lamps comprising an illuminated casingprovided at its lower front edge with a depending dimmer-forming member, and means'for attaching the casing to a lamp said dimmer extending entirely across that portion of the lamp over which it projects. 7
3. A combined dimmer and sign-for lamps comprising a casing having a lower open end and an advertising front, a dimmer extending downwardly from the lower edge of the casing front and thelower rear edge of the casing being cut away to fit over a lamp, and MM edge of the casing being recessed to engage a lamp, a dimmer extending downwardly and inwardly from the front edge of the casing to cross a lamp lens, and a sign in the front of the lamp casing.
5. A combined dimmer and sign comprising a casing open at its front and bottom and having an interior reflecting surface, the lower rear edge of the casing being recessed to engage a lamp, a dimmer extending downwardly and inwardly from the lower edge of the casing front to cross a lamp lens, guideways in the casing front, a sign plate mounted in said guide\\'ays, an opening in the casing top for inserting the sign plate, and means for closing the said openmg.
6. A combined dimmer and sign comprising a dimmer to extend over the upper portion of a lamp lens and having an inner refleeting surface, and a sign box or casing above the dimmer and having a lower open end in rear of the dimmer to receive the rays reflected therefrom; the front of the box or casing containing a sign plate illuminated from said rays.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
