LQBARBEAU. CLOTHESPIN. APPLICATION FILED JAN-24, I922 1,435,792. Pvwtented Nov- M 1922.
Z @072 EarZea/u INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 1%, 1922.
a as the o LEON BAEEEAU, OF NASHUA, NEW HAI IPEREIBE.
CLOTHESPIN.
Application filed January 24, 1922. Serial No. 531,407.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON BARBEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothespins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clothes pins constructed .strictly of noncorrosive wire so as to prevent injury to the clothes in applying the device thereto.
An object of the invention is to produce a means which may be clamped on the clothes in a laundry for supporting the same on a line either in the laundry or in a yard and thereby adding to the comfort and convenience of the laundress in hanging clothes.
A further object is to construct a clamping and supporting means for clothes con structed of non-corrosive wire to cheapen the manufacture thereof, and also to afford resiliency whereby the parts constituting the same will effectively clamp the clothes line and grip the clothes without injury thereto, and which may be readily disengaged to release the clothes.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation Figure 3 is a front elevation.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of the clamping member. Figure 5 is an enlarged detail view of the lever for operating the m. p In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention as comprising a body formed of a single length of wire 1 bent upon itself between its ends to provide parallel legs 22, the lower ends of which are interconnected by means of a cross piece 3 that carries a sleeve 4. These legs are spaced apart and the upper ends thereof are bent outwardly and then upon themselves and inwardly to provide bearing eyes 5. The inwardly extending portions forming the bearing eyes are bent upon themselves and extended inwardly toward the center of the space between the legs 2-2, as at 6, and then bent at right angles and extended up- 6 wardly to provide arms 7, which in the present instance are arranged side by side. The upper ends of the arms are bent overv upon themselves and then downwardly to provide a hook member 8 that is curved outwardly e away from the arms 7 as at 9, so as to provide a constricted entrance for the hook portion, in order that the hook may be securely held upon the line in the hanging of the clothes. 7
The cross piece 3 is offset from the main body portion and. the legs 22 as clearly illustrated in the drawings, so as to be in substantial alinement with the bearing eyes 5 and pivoted within the bearing eyes 5 is a 7 lever 10 which in the present form of my invention is constructed of a single length of wire bent upon itself between its ends to provide a handle portion 11, and then extended outwardly in opposite directions, as at 12, then bent at right angles, as at 13, and extended outwardly to form trunnions 1 that engage in the bearing eyes 5. The outward extensions 12 also constitute bearing portions and pivoted upon these portions are 8 the eyes 15 formed on the ends of the wire constituting a clamping member 16. This clamping member in the present instance is constructed from a length of wire bent upon itself between its ends and the end portion 9 of the wire opposite from the eyes 15 is curved upon itself, as at 17, to conform to the curvature of the sleeve 1, so that it may be engaged over the sleeve 4 and caused to clamp or bind against the sleeve in the op- 9 eration of the lever 10.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that the garment or fabric to be supported upon theline may be engaged be- 1 tween the sleeve 41 and the clamping member 16 and the lever 10 swung toward the arms 7. In the swinging movement of the lever toward the arms the eyes 15 are swung past the center of the trunnions 14, thereby se- 1 curely locking the curved end portion of the clamping member 16 against the sleeve 4. After the clothes have been thus clamped to the device the hook member 8 is engaged over the line, thereby enabling the clothes to 1 be suspended from the line.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modifications and variations may be made within. the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is a 1. A device of the class described, comprising a body portion formed of a single length of Wire bent upon itself to provide a hook at one end and a cross piece at the other end and provided with bearing eyes between the hook end and the cross piece,
a lever pivoted within said eyes and a clamping member associated with said lever and movable into and out of engagement with said cross piece.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body portion formed at one end to provide a hook and at the otherend to provide a cross piece offset from the body portion, bearing eyes formed on said body portion between the hook and the cross piece, a lever pivoted within said bearing eyes and a clamping member connected with said lever and'co-operating with said cross piece for the purpose described. a
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
LEON BARBEAU.
