Be it knownthat I, WVALTER S. BAGHMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in sterilizing Attachments for Water-Supply Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sterilizing attachments for water supply pipes and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction for a sterilizing attachment such as is illustrated and described in U. S. Patent No. 1,321,586 granted to me on October 16,1919.
The advantage of the present invention will more fully appear as I proceed with my specification.

Referring now in detail to'that embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings: 5 indicates a water supply pipe and 6 indicates as a whole, my As shown herein, the pipe 5 supplies Water to a filter 7 for rendering the water fit for drinking purposes, but as is apparent, the invention is not limited touse inconnection with a drinking water filter, since it may be used in other places where its peculiar characteristics make it advantageous to do so. The outlet from the pipe 5 is controlled by a faucet 8 through which the water flows after passing through the filter.
My improved sterilizing attachment 6 includes an upright tubular, non-corrosive metal casing 9, which as shown is of a height greater than its diameter. Said. casing is closed at-its ends by top and bottom screw threaded caps 10 and 11 respectively, the bottom cap preferably being conical or funnel-shaped in vertical section. "The cap 10 has threaded'into it a part 5 ofthe pipe 5, while thebottom cap 11 has threaded into it the other part 5 of the pipe 5, which con nec-ts ,the interior of the casing 9 with the interior of the filter 7. In the pipe part 5 is provided a union fitting'12' and above the same a shut off valve 13, the purposes of which will presently appear.
Concentrically within the casing and rest ing upon the funnel shaped bottom wall of the bottom cap 11 is a tubular vessel 1 1 providing the container for a sterilizing agent, for example, a solution containing active chlorine. This vessel or container is preferably made of glass and is of a diameter somewhat less than that of the casing so as to leave an annular space 15 between it and the casing 9. Said container is held in proper spaced relation within the casing by means of radially spaced, inwardly extend ing lugs 9 arranged near the top and bottom ends of the casing.
The bottom end of the container 11 is provided with a plurality of annularly spaced lugs 16 which depend below the integral bottom wall 17 of the container and bear upon theconical or funnel shaped bottom wall of the cap 11. The spaces or notches 16 between said lugs 16, serve to connect the annular space 15 about the container with the space within the cap 11 below the container and thus with the pipe part 5 connected with said cap. In the bottom wall 17, preferably in the vertical plane of the axis of the container, is provided a conical depression or recess 18 which includes a central depending boss 19 having a vertical hole or opening 20 of small diameter which provides an outlet for the container. When the faucet 8 is opened, a differential pressure willbe started at both top and bot tom of the container and in addition,- the water in the .casing 9, flowing through the spaces 16. on the way to the faucet 8 will set upan aspirating action which will tend to draw or suck the liquid in the container, out through the asbestosstrainer 21 and hole 20 in the bottom end of said container. I claim 'as 'my' invention:
1. A sterilizing attachment for water supply'pipes, comprising a casing adapted to be interposed in a water supply line and to form a part thereof, meansproviding 'a container within the casing for a sterilizing agent, while at the same time permitting a free flow of water through said casing about the container, which has a small discharge opening at one end, a differential pressure member associated with the other end of the container for keeping the sterilizing agent separate from the water in the casing, said member being active under the pressure of the water when flowing through the casing to discharge a part of the sterilizing agent out through the discharge opening of the container into said water.
2. A sterilizing attachment for water supply pipes, comprising a casing adapted to be interposed in a water supply line and to form a part thereof, means providing a container within the casing for a sterilizing agent, while at the same time permitting a free flow of water through said casing about the container, which has a small discharge opening at one end, a differential pressure member associated with the other end of the container for keeping the sterilizing agent separate from the water in the casing, said member being active under the pressure of the water when flowing through the easing to discharge a part of the sterilizing agent out through the discharge opening of the container into said water, but being inactive to discharge said agent when no water is flowing through said casing.
A sterilizing attachment for water supply pipes, comprising a casing adapted to be interposed in a water supply line and to form a part thereof, means providing a container within the casing for a sterilizing agent, while at the same time permitting a free flow of water through said casing about the container, which has a small discharge opening at its bottom end, a differential pressure member in the top end of said container capable of being-acted upon by the water pressure when a flow of water is set up through the casing, to force a part of the sterilizing agent out through said discharge opening into said water, said member keeping the sterilizing agent separated from the water at the top end of the casing.
4r. A sterilizing attachment for water supply pipes, comprising a casing adapted to be interposed in a water supply line and to form a part thereof, means providing a container within the casing for a sterilizing agent, while at the same time permitting a free flow of water through said casing about the container, which has a small discharge opening at its bottom end, means associated with the'top endof the container which is influenced by the water pressure to discharge a part of the sterilizing agent out through the discharge opening, said means keeping the said agentand water at the top end of the container separated at all times, and a strainer in the bottom'end of said container about said discharge opening.
5. A sterilizing attachment for water supply pipes, comprising a casing adapted to be interposed in a water supply line and to form a part thereof, means providing a container within the casing for a sterilizing agent, while at the same time permitting a free flow of water through said casing about the container, which has a small discharge opening at its bottom end, means associated with the top end of the container which is influenced by the water pressure to discharge a part of the sterilizing agent out through the discharge opening, said means keeping the said agent and water at the top end of the container separated at all times, and means for holding a wad of asbestos within the container about the discharge opening, for straining the sterilizing agent passing therethrough.

A sterilizing attachment for water supply pipes, comprising a casing adapted to beinterposed in a water supply line and to form a part thereof, means providing a container within the casing for a sterilizing agent, while at the same time permitting a free flow of water through said casing about the container, which has a small discharge opening at its bottom end, a flexible wate1= proof member fixed to the top end of the container for keeping the water separated from the sterilizing agent, said flexible memher being active under the pressure of water when flowing through the casing to discharge a quantity of the agent out through the discharge opening at the bottom end of the container.
7. A; sterilizing attachment for water supply pipes, comprising a casing adapted to be interposed in a; water supply line and to form a part thereof, means providing a container within the casing for a sterilizing agent, while at the same time permitting a free flow of water through said casing about the container, which has a small discharge opening at its bottom end, a water-proof bag removably attached to the top end of the container for keeping the water separated from the sterilizing agent, said bag being active under the pressure of the water when flowing through the casing to discharge a quantity of the agent out through the discharge opening at the bottom end of the container.
