Be it known-that I, KARL VIK'roR RUDIN,
correspondent, subject of the King of Sweden, residing at 12 Karduansmakaregatan, Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Zero-Resettin Devices, of which the followingis a speci cation.
y his invention relates Yto limprovements in calculating machines and more particularly to that class of calculating machines in which the values ot the calculations are set on setting disks, having a variable number of teeth adapted to transmit the said values to a registering mechanism which is mounted on a slidable carriage adapted to be shifted laterally along the setting mechanism, so that its registering elements or numeral wheels can be brought into cooperation with any of the setting disks of the setting mechanism. Between said setting and re istering mechanisms are arranged locking members intended to be actuated by shoulders,`mounted upon ythe setting vmechanism and at predetermined times to lock the registering mechanism. Said locking members are arranged in such a way that they only by their own weight aim to mesh with a registering mechanism and cause the numeral wheels to rotate with a step-by-step movement.

Another arrangement has been proposed in order to avoid said drawbacks. In accordance with said last arrangement the locking members or the detent mechanism are mounted in such a way that for throwing it out of engagement with the numeral Wheels it is shifted in a direction parallel to the axis of the numeral wheels.
Both of said arrangements are, however, objectionable in so far as they are only actuated by springs, whereby their operation necessitates a large amount of manual labor. A quick Wearing out of the parts is also caused. Further the mechanisms for the operation of said zeroising arrangements requires much room and more particularly the latter arrangement requires a second slide which complicates the arrangement.
The object of the present invention is to provide a zero setting or adjusting mechanism in which these objections are avoided.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown lin the accompanying drawing in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate the corresponding parts.v
In said drawing-Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of the machine illustrating setting and' registering mechanisms of a calculating machine of that class, having setting disks with a variable number of teeth. Fig. 2 is an end side-view of the carriage seen from the right end with the cover plates and the usual wing-nut for the zeroisingoperation removed. Fig, 3 is a side view of a casing enclosing the zeroising means connected with the wing nut, viz the parts removed in Fig. 2. Finally Fig. 4 is a side view of a part of the carriage seen from behind with some parts broken away cam slot formed in a cam disk 8 loosely mounted on the shaft 1. By rotating the said disk on the shaft 1 by means of a handle 9 any desired number of the teeth 7 can be shifted into a position beyond the periphery of the setting disk. vThe number of the teeth shifted beyond the periphery ot the setting disks represents the value to be introduced in the calculation in each column'o'r the reg istering` mechanism. ln iront ot said setting disks,the whole of which may be termedthe setting mechanism, numeral wheels 10 are loosely mounted on a shatt 11 disposed par allel to the shaitt 1. Each'of the said numeral wheels is provided at its circumterence with `the numerical characters 'from 1 to 9 and the O sign, and one of the said characters of each column of numeral wheels is at a time displayed through a. peep hole 12, made in a cover 13, which is common to all the numeral wheels. Each of the numeral wheels has a spur gear 14:, secured to its side which is provided with ten teeth, and the latter are in mesh with the teeth or" a transmission wheel f which is loosely mounted on a shaft 1G dis posed parallel to the shaiftll of the numeral wheels. The said transmission. or intermediate gears 15 which are mounted on the same axis 16 are located in the plane of the radially shi'ftable teeth 'T of the setting disks 6, and

Thereby also the numeral wheels are advanced a distance which corresponds to the number of teeth 7 projected into their operative positions beyond the periphery of the setting disks 6. ln order to transmit a certain number to the numeral wheels 10 the operator sets the said number on the setting disks 6, whereupon he rotates the crank. i
Carrying means are provided between consecutive numeral wheels which shift a numeral wheel forward or backward the distance corresponding to one value, it the numeral wheel o1l the nent lower order passes from its 9 position into its 0 position, or

Rocking levers 17 having the form of hammers are used for this purpose, which levers areloosely mounted upon a shaft 18 disposedparallel to the axis of the registeringmechanism and which extends with their free upper ends to points adjacent to the gear wheels 15.l Each 'of thenumeral wheels is provided with a pin 19 which strikes the head 2O of the hammer 17 so as to rock ythe latter, when the numeral wheel passes from its.-9 position into its 0 position, and vice versa. Thereby a. cam surface 210i the rocking lever 17is thrown into the path of ,a laterally shiftable tooth 22 of the rcooperating setting diskl.y Upon rotation of the setting disk 6V the cam lface 21' shifts the tooth 22 laterally and into mesh with the teeth of the transmission or intermediate gear wheel 15 cooperatingr with the numeral wheel of the nent higher order. Thereby the said numeral wheel 10 is advanced the-distance oit one value. the purpose of performing additions or subtractions, or multiplications or divisions, the crank can be turned either to the right or to the lett, twok teeth l22 and cam faces 21 are provided, only one of which is operative when turning the crank in one direction. At the end ot the carrying operation cam faces on the setting disks rock the levers 17 into their normal positions shown inFig. 1.

' On resetting the numeral Wheels back to Zero position the wing-nut 24; is acted on in pawls or locki provided with an arm orA the usual manner. Thereby the numeral wheels are in known Way by means of the cog-rim and the cog-wheel 27 returned to zero position. At the same time the arm or shoulder 31 is caused to swing out from the slot or recess 32 and to slide against the outer periphery of the said cog-rim. Thereby thebar 30 is turned about its shaft 29 and in the direction against the locking member or pawls 23 so as to release the same from the numeral Wheels. Said Wheels can therefor in known Way be rotated for the purpose of being reset into the zero position. After the zero setting operation has been carried out in the case now in question after half a revolution of the nut 24-the arm or projection 31 engages in the other slot or recess 32 in which, operation the numeral Wheels are once more locked by the locking members or pawls 23.
It must be remarked that by the said combination of the arm or projection 3l and the slots or recesses 32 the Wing nut 24 is locked each time after having carried out a zerosetting operation.
I claim:
l. In a calculating machine, the combina.- tion With a setting mechanism, a registering mechanism, locking members intended to be actuated by shoulders mounted upon the setting mechanism and at predetermined times to lock the registering mechanism, means for returning the registering elements to Zero, of a bar mounted upon a shaft parallel to that of the locking members arranged for actuation by the said zeroising means, in order to turn in the direction against the lookin members and to release the same from t e numeral wheels.
2. In a calculating machine, the combination with a setting mechanism, registering elements, a locking member intended to be actuated by shoulders mounted upon the setting mechanism, means for returning the registering elements to zero, of a bar mounted upon a shaft parallel to that of the locking member provided With an arm or pro- 'ection intended to be actuated against the ocking member and to release the same from the numeral wheels.
3. In a calculating machine, the combination of a setting mechanism, a registering mechanism, locking members intended to be actuated by shoulders mounted upon the )Setting mechanism and at predetermined times to lock the registering mechanism, means to return the numeral Wheels to zero and including an interior cog-rim having a recess in its outer periphery, a bar having an arm or projection normally engaged in said recess and which during the rotation of the cog-rim slides against the outer periphery thereof and moves said bar against the locking members to release the latter from the numeral wheels.
4. In a calculating machine, the combination with a setting mechanism, a registering mechanism, locking members intended to be actuated by shoulders mounted upon the setting mechanism and at predetermined times to lock the registering mechanism, means for returning the numeral` Wheels to zero, and including a Wing nut and an interior cog-rim having recesses in its outer periphery and a bar mounted upon a shaft parallel to that of the locking members having an arm or projection normally engaged in one of said recesses and securing the Wing nut in locked, zero-setting position.
