j FIRE nscarn Application filed. Jilly 13,
To all whom it'maj concern:
Be it known that We, CECI C. ABBOTT, a l
resident of Harbor Springs, Michigan, and
has special reference to portable fireescapes which may be anchored within a room when use of the same is'necessary, and operated to lower a person from'a window of the'roomto the ground; An object of'our invention is to provide a fire escape which'rnay be readily returned to the room WhQl'nlt has beenrelieved of the weight of a person so that another occupant of the room may escape The inventionresides incertain novel features which are illustrated in the, acco1n f panying drawings andh'ereinafter fully set forth. 'M
In the drawings" f I Figure l is aside elevation, partly broken away, of our improved fire escape; 1 I
Fig. 2 is a central horizontal section;
Fig. 3 is a transverse-section with parts in elevation; I
Fig. 4 is a detail'section.
In carrying out our invention, we employ an "outer casing 1 which is provided with an eye or hook 2 adapted to be engaged over a bedpost or some fixed object adjacent'a window of a room. .This casing is provided at a ,point diametrically oppositethe hook orj' eye 2 with a slot 3 through which the tape or cable 4 passes, the said tape or cable being equipped at its free end with a belt to be passed around the body of the person using the escape, The tape is wound within a supporting frame. The partitions .9" divide drum 5 and has its inner end secured tothe hub 6 of the drum, said hub being keyed to one end of the main shaft 7 supported in the walls 8 of an inner supporting frame and in partitions or plates 9 forming a part of the the casing into a tape or vcable chamber containing the drum Sand the cable'4, and working chambers containing the operating mechanism. Upon that portion of the shaft, 7 which is disposed in the workin chamber, a ratchet wheel or collar-10 is, tted upon the shaft so that it may slide longitudinally of the same but is constrained to rotate 1921.1, seriarne; 484,463, I

Whenthe device is in' use, the unwinding of" the tape or cable 4' williimpart motion to the shaft 7 and this motion will be transmitted through the; described gearing'to'the governor shaft 18. [As the speed increases,
the governor arms or shoes'willimove apart under centrifugal action and bear upon the peripheralwall of the governor casing, as
stated The speedof the parts will,v there fore, be checked and the personuusing the device will be lowered gradually" to the ground so thatfhe willnot be injuredthrough too rapid descent and sudden contact with the ground. When the cable 4.- is'rewound; f
the ratchet member 10 will work loosely upon the ratchet member 12 and, ride over a the .same so that the. governor will not be operated. U a To rewind. the-cable or tape 4,"we provide a winding cranlr20, the hub 21 of'which is fitted loosely upon thefend of the shaft 7 remote from the drum 5 said end of the shaft being extended throughthe side of the casing lto receive the hub 21. 'Upon said hub 21 is' fixed a pinion 22 which 'meshes'with'agear23 on a countershaft 24 which isjournaled in the adjacent sidewall tions 9, is seemed a gear vided'a very compact, si

lit Will be readily noted that we havepropie and efficient device which may be readily used by unskilled persons and which may he inajnii'fiactured at a lOW cost, The governor will effectually retard the using the device i efficiency Whether light or heavy.
